Right now he’s thereabouts, in that exactly what Lloyd said, he’s getting involved but his maturity isn’t quite there to make marks stick. I would be really surprised if he didn’t have a big game at least once this year. 

As I've pointed out successfully in pre-season. he isn't a forward. I think 1 goal in 4 weeks and barely any shots on goal proves this once and for all. His role is important for Gawn to get breaks though and when he goes into the ruck he is good at ground level.

Bloke’s still 19 and you’re writing him off as a forward already. Even though his lack of goals largely stem from his current inability to hold contested marks, which should be rectified in time as he matures.

I think its pretty obvious he clearly hasn't yet developed his forward craft skills (Nic Nat pointed this out in the commentary). He's played predominantly in the ruck as a jnr. and is now being asked to simply compete in the air forward of the ball when he's not helping Max out. While he isn't clunking them consistently yet I haven't seen him beaten in a marking contest yet, he generally halves the contest which is fine for a 19 year old still learning every game.

The answer is he isn't a forward... YET.

I think he moves pretty well for a 19 yo in the forward line. Got himself in some dangerous spots on the weekend and if he clunked a few of his marks early close to goal would likely have kicked a few. Still created a contest, wasn't easily outmarked. I think he will be a beaut in the forwardline and will keep getting better as he learns and matures. He will also become an excellent ruck.

Congratulations!

What I noticed was how many of our goals on Sunday resulted from contests in the air near to goal with Jackson and or McDonald contesting if not marking.

We crumb to packs better than in the past Kozzie, Spargo ANB all prominent here and the contest he provides is critical in that the ball isn't easily marked by opponents. Of course it would be better if he marked them and he will soon enough.

He could do worse than to study Hawkins lead technique - he has a great lead / double back / lead again technique.

He also get pushed under the ball on occasions in ruck contests but his leap means he still impacts the contest.

He is good below his knees and his kicking is solid.

So much upside in that guy - great addition.

Really? And what happens if he comes out and kicks 4 against the Hawks.  Is it still proven once and for all?

He. Is. 19 years old.

He was a bottom age recruit that has amazing potential.

I think this is a fair analysis.

He is only 19 and hasnt devrloped fully physically either.

Hasnt been great in the ruck but hes nimble at ground level in terms of crumbing, chasing and tackling.

As a side note so is Max Gawn....his crumbing has been excellent. Plays like a small for a 208cm man.

LJ is doing his job by bringing the ball to ground and stopping intercept marks and run.

When he starts holding all his marks...watch out.

I reckon he’s gone from running under the ball in the preseason and the first 2 weeks to starting to time his leaps nicely. Next step is holding them.

He does some sneaky clever things though. He gathered the ball at half forward after Pickett caught Selwood and he deliberately waited until the tackler engaged him before releasing the handball. He rarely gives short handballs either, he takes his time to find the right option. 

He’s not a natural forward but there’s more than enough natural footballer in him.

I noticed on the weekend that he very, very rarely gets beaten in a contest. That is worth it's weight in gold when you look at how many times Lever or May simply out position their opponent. 

He makes every contest a 50/50 at worst and I believe a lot of his positioning in marking contests create spillages to the dangerous spots we want to be hitting. Whilst he is not ripping marks in just yet, he is certainly doing his job up forward.

True. 

It's my pet hate when forwards get out-marked and don't at least bring it to ground for us to crumb. 

 

Also nearly took a few huge marks (out first goal from Tracc was crumbed) against the Cats.

Yeah but @Dr.D said he's a crap forward so that comment is pointless.....

One of Fritsch Picket or Jackson was involved in every single goal

 

(except the Gawn centre square goal but Jackson was competing in the goal square at least) 

 

I particularly liked the way he two handed the ball straight to Trac for a simple goal.  He knew where he was and directed the ball to him.  A classic and canny piece of craft.  Think he is a beauty - nowhere near his peak, but definitely a positive addition to the team.

I was looking forward to him v Blicavs who is similar type of tall, athletic player who plays ruck and a key position. I thought physically he held his own against him in the stoppage ruck contests and didn't look physically overwhelmed at all. This is a huge step up for a 19 yr old tall.

One of the pre draft worries about him was that he was an athlete first and a very raw, project footballer second. In fact, as these examples show, he's got elite footy IQ.
