I voted Serong and Stephens but I've changed my mind several times and probably will again. I think Serong would be a walk up start as a small forward in our 22. According to reports he's strong overhead, good on the ground and loves a tackle and a goal. He could also provide a midfield rotation with time. Stevens provides the class and run we desperately need to develop to hopefully make Tomlinson redundant on the wing.

Would be very happy with Young or Kemp as well. If we take any body but Serong at 3 I could live with Weightman at 8 if the others are gone. I like Flanders as well but worry he's too similar to Petracca, if he were still there at 8 it would be tempting. 

 

I'd like to get picks 7, 8, 14, & 24.

And in so doing try to get Ash, Stephens, Weightman, and Dylan Williams.

That gets us plenty of leg speed, skills, agile stepping through traffic,  and X factor.

 

Also, Callum Jamieson from WA,  might be just as good a pickup as Luke Jackson,  but at a later draft spot.

I concocted a scenario where we get Young, Kemp and a small forward prospect (Pickett, if you will). But I was on the metro and didn't have a pen. Now, the maths escape me. Can anyone else show their workings?

I suppose that after the last two or three seasons when the club spurned the upper reaches of the draft, I haven’t delved as deeply into the draft pool as in the past. I taped the games on Foxtel and watched a limited number of highlight reels which, because of their nature, don’t excite me all that much.

I admit that I did watch the Dylan Stephens’ highlights which impressed me and, if available and picked at #10, I wouldn’t be upset. I’ve only glimpsed at Luke Jackson and Brodie Kemp’s highlights, remember Rowell, Anderson and Young from the Australia v Casey game and watched the NAB Boys League Grand Final. 

 

So now that the club’s draft position has been clarified and we look like having two picks in the top ten and one close to the middle of the second round, I’ve decided to look more closely at the footage available of the real national championship games to get a feel for those touted to come to us in the draft.

 

I have started with the Round 2 game between Vic Country and Vic Metro shown on Foxtel in early June. The game featured the now Gold Coast bound pair of Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson who unsurprisingly were the best players for their team. The former stood out for his dominance in contested possessions - the latter for his classy clearance work and tackling. I don’t think I need say more other than that it’s a pity from our perspective that the AFL changed its tack and decided to go full on with draft assistance for the Suns after burying the Demons when they were just as, if not more, needy five or six years ago. Anderson would have been an ideal pick for us at 2 but that’s enough crying over spilt milk. 

 

Despite the fact that the two stars were in the Metro team, the Country boys edged in front just before half time and won an interesting contest by a couple of goals. Their best player was  Hayden Young playing off half back who won the possession tally (close to 30) and was excellent rebounding out of defence with his rapier like left foot and strong intercept marking. His teammate Lachie Ash, also impressed with his dash out of defence. Both are definite high end draft potential in the range of our selections. The other player who impressed me was Country midfielder Caleb Serong who also is a top 10 prospect who looks like he could also play as a small forward. Sam Flanders was also a solid contributor who took my eye a bit but I think he’s a bit too much like a number of our inside mids (I wouldn’t discount him but he might have to be in the Patrick Cripps class to sway our recruiters given who we have there).

 

Brodie Kemp also played in the match, mainly deep in defence and didn’t really stand out. He must have improved considerably in later games and before his ACL to have gained his current status. The Metro team had a solid key forward in Josh Smith who kicked a few goals in the first half but faded out later and, on reflection, I don’t think he’s in our top 30 range. 

 

I hope to catch up with a couple more games over the weekend and to see if I can work out why we seem so enamored about Luke Jackson ahead of Tom Green and whether Kemp should be in contention.

Now that Green is a realistic option at pick 3, he is my preference. 

If we land Green then my preference at pick 10 would be Young/Ash if still available or Kemp/Stephens if both are gone by then.

Taylor or Pickett with pick 28.

I understand that we’ve made the decision not to nominate Green. If so, would that be due to an understanding we’ve reached with GWS or are we committed to Jackson and scared that GWS would not match our offer because they want Jackson too?

If he’s the best available at our pick 10, I would take Kossie but I would be surprised if he fitted the bill at that number. What if Stephens or Kemp was available?

Assume the other 3% vote was for Jackson. Plenty of support now.  I’m still in the Young (elite ball use, aerial marking, leadership)  and  Kemp (pace, strength, versatility, star potential) combo. Both very impressive in champs.

and hoping for Young at 10. if not Young - in order of preference - Ash, Stephens, Serong, Kemp

I actually think looking at the needs of those sides between our pick#3 & #10, one of those will be available at 10

Not exactly what many, if any, were thinking 2 weeks ago.

Just a reminder. We are v weak in key defence positions. May and Lever quite unreliable, unlikely to play, say, 20 games between them per season. Much as it hurts to say it, we need pitential key defenders

Foxfooty’s phantom has us passing on Kemp & Stephens to take Pickett at 11. Balmer states that the Dogs are red hot on Pickett at 13. Only pick trade I can see us doing is with Port if Stephens is there at 10 and Hawks show that they’re keen on him at p11.

Sticks in the craw a bit that we potentially had a play at Hayden Young if we held onto pick 8.

MFC trying to be a little bit too clever rather than just maximising the picks. feels like we're really rolling the dice on two guys when we could easily add a couple of absolute jets with much less risk attached to them.

Agree.  We need to use these picks strongly to get pace and footy skills into our transition footy.  That’s our key weaknesses. We need players to deliver the footy without killing it.  That’s apparently why Frosty was given the opportunity to go elsewhere.  How can we get skilful youngsters like Young, Stephens or Kemp onboard.

My biggest supporter regret is still the loss of Liam Jurrah. I've always backed possibilities like Bennell and was disappointed we lost Frost. Because while winning is great, I still want some extra-natural excitement in watching my team.

I rate our list and don't think who we draft will be the key in delivering us flag. I support Taylor and Goodwin and absolutely adore Clarry. I also think draft picks should be considered like a non-refundable gift voucher - it doesn't matter if you spend the full value so long as you get what you want. 

I should be super-excited by the prospect of Jackson and Pickett. And yet, where this draft is heading leaves me feeling somewhat uneasy. I think it's because of how far the assessment of talent has shifted in the past two weeks - post-football. An outside top-ten prospect and a player slated for the 30s are now our potential pick 3 and what was pick 8.

Always a possibility.

Trying to be objective, I have always thought that drafting is a combination of getting in the best talent whilst building a list that gets you the chance to compete for a number of years.

We’ve had a few cracks at the top of the draft and have a number of ‘best talent available’ types who are predominantly inside mids.

Our list structure is a little bit unbalanced and is short of a key forward and a small who can both apply pressure, win the ball at ground level and take their goalscoring opportunities. It is a critical role and an area where we were absolutely horrible in last year.

Pickett is the one we’ve rounded on to play the role. We can’t pick swap with Port (as pick 10 started with them) and Dogs are a strong chance of taking Pickett with pick 13, so trading with Geelong may not be palatable.

I’m conflicted on taking him that high, but ultimately, if we kick the can too far down the track on drafting for the list, we could end up with none of our preferred options.

Jackson may be the best tall that we get access to for a number of years. We are going to pass on some good players, and that does make me uncomfortable, but I’m starting to see that it’s probably the right move at this point.
