A conspiracy theorist might suggest that the tour of the Gabba complete with channel 7 cameras on the scene are all part of an elaborate plan by Elliott and his management to make Collingwood up the ante.

do we put this activity on hold now?

I still think it would send a powerful message.

Eh? How is Newnes a fall back for Elliott?

Well if Tom ‘even a broken clock is right twice a day’ Browne says we’re out of the race it must be so....... Haha spare me!

All we know is that both the Dees and Lions have offered him 3 years and the Pies have offered him 2.

Just because he was at the Lions most recently doesn’t mean that’s where he’s going to end up. Both Fagan and Noble have simply said they have put forward the offer to Elliot, just as Melbourne have.

We could up the ante to 4 years and front end his contract.

Hopefully we've got a final card to play and length of contract gives real security.  It's always a gamble and we've been burnt previously but that stuff is in the past.

We need to win and we need to win now.  And if we don't spend the money on players like Elliott,  those who we've already got listed get the money instead.  The cap has to be filled somehow.  100% these days but I stand corrected.

That's the interesting point that I reckon some miss on here.

AFL rules have all clubs paying a very similar amount, from the Premiers, to the basement dwellers, which means very ordinary players are receiving heaps more than they do at other clubs.

Lets bring in some players who are actually worth the money we are forced to spend.

I agree. Up the ante!

It’s a risk but we’re not giving up key draft picks.

Now Sydney is a team that’s taking a dangerous risk with Daniher, due to giving away first round drafts.

If Sydney give up 2 x top 10 picks for Daniher they get everything they deserve.

We made a Prelim last year. Believe it or not, this is our window if everything goes right.

Spend the money and have an all-out crack at topping up for a flag tilt.

We need Elliot. We are way too vanilla in the forward half.

This is probably the reason he’ll choose Brisbane over us. Which forward line would you like to play in?

Exactly. Potentially the only thing we have to offer Elliott ahead of Collingwood and Brisbane is money and length of contract.

At the end if 2018 we would have sold some hope too but after last year we can only sell paying overs.

Unless we up the ante or have sustained success players will not choose the Demons over successful rivals.

If Elliot signs with Brisbane, it would be another indictment on Goodwin and co at the hands of Brisbane. Their progression and performance this year across the season showed up Goodwin and the club, and now we may lose a free agency race against a team that started 2018 at 0-8. I know we've really been no better than Brisbane over the past decade but 2019 has been an absolute dagger into our reputation and appeal to players, fans and media alike. Even Richmond was able to get Prestia and Caddy over the line after their pathetic 2016 season. We stand to get Langdon and overpay for a Frost replacement in Tomlinson, when the former probably would have been cheaper to keep.

Take it one step further. Which coach would you prefer to play under?

I’m not sure whether he toured our “world class” facilities and if the tour was guided by the charismatic catatonic Goodwin but I’ll bet my right nut that he was more impressed with Fagan and the direction Brisbane are headed.

Spot on to those suggesting that we can only land players with superior dollars or no other suitors. Take a look at the “big” names we’ve landed and how many others were in the race. Especially after our inflated offers were put out there.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
