Bruce is something we already have in Tommy Mac...

I can see why we are not interested.

We need to find or develop a class option and at the moment that's Weid unless someone else bobs up.

It 'aint Bruce or Jenkins

I just had a bit of a browse through some 2019 stats on goal kickers for Brisbane, Collingwood, GWS, Richmond and Melbourne.

Brisbane:

20+ Goals - 7 Players (Cameron & Hipwood combined for 92)

10+ Goals - 12 Players

Collingwood:

20+ Goals - 5 players (De Goey & Mihocek combined for 70)

10+ Goals - 13 Players

GWS:

20+ Goals - 4 players (Cameron & Finlayson combined for 120)

10+ Goals - 11 Players

Richmond:

20+ Goals - 4 players (Dusty & Lynch combined for 95)

10+ Goals - 9 Players

Melbourne:

20+ Goals - 3 players (T-Mac & Weid combined for 29)

10+ Goals - 7 Players

Yes, we can all agree we had an ordinary year, but scoring power still has to be a major concern?

Plus we are talking about moving our second highest goal scorer into the midfield for more minutes

So, Lets just imagine this for a minute, Tom gets injured again.. Weid just does not come on, no Tim Smith, Petty has played 5 games.. and we dont want to get a replacement to have in the wings. Its actually irresponsible and daft to not be going after a big bodied fwd who can kick goals or provide a target. We lost Hogan last year and we will enter a second year without replacing him.

Its very frustrating, and what point in the year will the cries come for wish we had a Bruce or a  Jenkins.. i reckon after R4 after Goals of 9, 11, 8 & 7 in the first 4 rounds.

Would you agree we need a proven performer whilst Weid develops (or in case he does not come on?)

There has been no explanation of T Macs'  drop in form last season. He admitted he wasn't injured.

He got the oppositions best defender and he clearly underperformed.I cannot agree that we have this covered and would think it remiss of the club not to go and get a readymade  2 goal a game forward.T Mac may or may not recover his form. I, for one, would like another option.

What class option is available? Obviously developing our own is a bridge too far for this club. We have no one even ready to develop. Petty is 2 years away and if we push him early he will surely fail as many before him have.

No one is saying we've got it covered...

...but we need more than Bruce.

I think we will go into next season with Fritsch now being a lot more important as a forward.

He can step up as he did in the later part of season 2019.

We desperately need Weid to take it to the next level though if we are to be a real threat.

If he can't then we have to land a quality KPF...

We're only playing around the edges with the likes of Bruce or Jenkins.

Who amongst the dees is a 2 goal  game player? We need to have one now, not pretend we have one . Bruce is not ideal but he fits the bill and is available now for pick 26.

I don't care what he said. Tmac was clearly carrying an injury and also did not look fully fit. In tbe first third of the season he had a turning circle of a bummer and couldn't jump properly and struggled to collect the ball off the ground.

He looked much better after the bye and started to play much more like he did in 2018  - running well and really extending to grab his marks. Then he got injured.

Agree things were made more difficult by Hogan not taking the best defender. And by weed being well out of touch.

But if tmac is at full fitness I'm confident he will get back to his 2018 form.

As rjay notes Fritsch up forward all season. I could see him averaging two goals a game. And melksham will add 20 odd goals to the mix if fit.

To be honest I'm not sure where i stand on Bruce and jenkins, though I'm more concerned about our lack of a gun small forward.

I love Fritsch as much as the next guy, but are we confident he can kick enough goals when teams put more work into him as a permanent forward?

Agree, Binman. Anyone who couldn't see with their own four eyes that TMAC was playing with an ailment is blind or obstinate.

It doesn't matter whether it's Bruce , Jenkins or whoever and personally I think you have no chnce of getting a bloke once he nominates another club, but we need someone.

We have 2 key forwards and one is still developing and the other has had injuries. Petty is a fair way off and may be needed in the back line.

I agree we have mid sized forwards in Tracc, Fritter, Melksham and maybe Hannan, but we are clearly light on for key forwards and it needs to be addressed now.

If Tom and Weid are injured we are horribly exposed.

Even a stopgap player for a couple of seasons would be fine, giving us time to develop, or find, another longer term solution.

As others have said Hogan, has not been replaced and IMO it is a major worry if not fixed.

Well I guess i'm both dieter but then you  obviously know much more than I do. I listened to Toms' interview and believed him. My mistake.  Even at his best T Mac wont kick enough goals. He is second string in my opinion and the club  needs to get another big forward. It is high risk not to . We can get small forward in the draft we cannot get a ready made big forward in this draft and we have no real prospect of developing one in the near future. But I guess if you have faith in the football department then all will be ok . I don't so lets see how it pans out.

Our forward structure and clean ball movement up the ground is where all the goals will come from. Look at the WC game at Optus. Forward line was functioning beautifully until Jetta dumped Smith on his head and he went off with concussion. That’s where we lost that game. We had too many players injured all year and no cohesion in the forward line. Including too many skill errors up the ground which puts every one out of position.

Tmac is capable of kicking 50 in a well functioning team. Trac, Melksham, Hannan, Fritsch and Hunt are all capable of kicking 20 plus:

Trac

17’ 26.6

18’ 19.23

19’ 22.14

Melksham

17’ 21.6

18’ 32.24

19’ 15.14 from 12 games

Hannan

17’ 22.10

18’ 22.16

19’ 4.1 from 6 games

Fritsch

18’ 17.12

19’ 20.16

as a fwd/def

Hunt

19’ 20.16

If he's not up to it "Yet", then we are fast running out of time for him to get there.

Yes, he's still young enough, but he really needs to cement his spot this year.

his game when freo surprised gw$ was exactly why i still think, pending injury, he'll be one of the most damaging players in the game

body is clearly a concern tho

fwiw, i don't see bruce as a solution for us - we need better pressure at ground level as well as someone who is a genuine target, which is why elliott made such sense, as he's equally adept at ground level and as a main target

most sides really play with one main target these days; even when together, for the most part, when he wasn't injured jack riewoldt was a decoy to clear space for lynch

gw$ are an exception with three mobile talls, but the lack of ground level swarm they created on grand final was a significant contributor to them being destroyed by the tigers - admittedly they looked cooked after two close finals

Not necessary. We signed an intercept defender so it all evens out... ?

I agree 'Chazz', he's got this year or he's a bust.

Many already see him as a bust already but I will give him one more year.

The time is now or never for Weid...

I'm not convinced TMac is a natural forward.  Bruce is.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
