Not with 3 years left he isn't.

The key to this for me is if he has lost the players.

If he has, we are in deep trouble.

If he hasn't, it can be fixed.

You would think and hope those extra years are performance based with triggers, quite clearly missed this one in a big way.

I think it takes a good relationship and healthy mutual respect to be a mentor and the mentoree needs to want to be mentored.

Am not aware of a relationship between Goodwin and Lyon so doubt it as a mentor.

There are probably better candidates for a coaching director.

How comfortable would you be with Ross Lyon as your senior mentor, really?

Makes you wonder if Roos or Blues jumped too early?

I'm sorry, but how did he destroy either of those clubs? St.Kilda were an absolute rabble under Grant Thomas. He took them to consecutive grand finals and was one good bounce away from being a Premiership Coach. Also got Freo to a grand final and consecutive finals series but faced a once-in-a-generation Hawks side.

I know he left the Saints when the wheels started to fall off, but it was only time I can remember when the Saints were actually a formidable side.

Yeah destroy probably a bit harsh, but those lists were primed when he walked in......he did well, but has he adapted to the changes in the last few years...maybe to a degree. It seems its just all about Ross to me. Anyway, we have a coach , for now, i dont think hed be taking over anytime soon.

Might be good to have someone come in without a relationship though? One of the problems we seem to have is too much of a boys club going on.

Fixed for you @Kent

As the "great man" Gary Lyon would say - "it's about the body of work".

Goodwin, as you well know took a team to a prelim, less than a year ago, and there has been a range of extenuating factors as you also know.

Ross, Bolton, Richardson - nope.

Not fixed Onion

How this board gave him 3 year extension is beyond belief

But there you go others think differently. I would say his performance in 2018 we anything to write home about.

Update: Have been told that Worsfold is in the running for the Freo job. Worsfold v Scott, who will get the job? #NonstopbreakingAFLnews

The depressing part Mr Leg is it going to take till June 2020 to find out.

Would you have Lyon in a Neil Balme type role?

Oh they told a lot. A Coach who was very ill prepared for a season

any more of the present form and Simon will be gone

I'm not advocating as such, but I'm pretty surprised that for a club that's played 2 Grand Finals in 50 years we're so quick to dismiss a coach who took two clubs with similar struggles to us to Grand Finals.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
