Is simple...is Simon

The gameplan was tinkered with last year after it didn't work. It then got dissected and destroyed by West Coast. It's been tinkered with this year since about Round 5, or so we're told.

Yet here we are, tinkering (again) the approach that is an illustrious 5-16 with an absolute belting coming up.

It's not [censored] working!

The most useful outcome tomorrow night is for the Melbourne Football Club to be absolutely dismantled on the field and to lose by lots. Goodwin needs a wake up call to be shaken out of this reverie. I’d prefer it not be this way, can only base comments on what he says . But based on his comms, this is what has come to pass. Goodwin - Endgame

edit/ I don’t think Goodwin will be able to get all the Infinity Stones

Goodwin: We’re certainly not overhauling our game - I find this actually alarming and it actually explains this year to a tee.

I don't. Quite the opposite. We don't need to overhaul our game. So boringly simplistic to think we need to make major changes to our game to be competitive.

Our game plan is outdated. all of the top sides play a forward half game and moved the ball more conservatively. sorry Simon but you and tactical guru Craig Jennings are a step behind the competition so changes need to be made.

Is this the 3rd or 4th Injury May has had this year? Anyone know when the new fitness team start?

Has said coach got a gambling issue?

Not sure it’s relevant to how crap we’re going but yes, he had or has a gambling issue.

He also got in a drunken physical altercation with a photographer in December 2005.

Richmond is going to smash us by 12 goals. You wait and see. We'll stay within striking distance for 2.5 quarters, it'll stretch out to 28-30 points by three-quarter time, and then the Toiges will slam on 7-8 goals in the last. You just wait and see. You can predict this [censored] down to the behinds scored.

So why did he come back at all? He clearly hasn't been fit at any stage this season. Shocking player management.

Yep !! Another prime example is Joel Smith, he should seriously think about going to the players Association and getting legal opinion regarding negligence, in a duty of care OH&S scenario by sending him back on in a useless Practice match and totally stuffing up his season! Tell me if I am wrong about this What a farce!

Goodwin: We’re certainly not overhauling our game. We’re tinkering with certain aspects, and bridging the gap between our offence and defence. That takes time, but there are things we are doing that we’re hopeful will have immediate impact tomorrow night.

For those who don't think part of the problem is the game plan...

Cotchin being interviewed at half time said if they could start getting a bit more contested ball they know they can easily run off Melbourne on the outside.

Seriously Goody, I know (hope) you don't really believe what you said above. But this year every team in the competition knows how to play & beat Melbourne.

This would want to be a hell of a tinker you're working on...

Why do you ask?

I read it as he is gambling on our future, not that he is putting bets on outcomes.  Even Simple Simon wouldn’t be that dumb..

Technically, he did say both those things. He's admitted we're very poor, hence the "when you've won 5 games", and he's stated what action they're taking "tinkering with aspects". I just find that a bit unconvincing.

Obviously, Goodwin's first thought was a different but 'as expected' excuse that was not justifiable. Very much a jumble of unconvincing words already imparted to the death across the year. It is time he was replaced as the tendency to dodge the issues is far too repetitive - he has not developed the team across the board ( two teams actually as Casey is involved to the hilt) and in that regard, Casey - where he applies less interest - is out--performing his main charges.

Agree. He should be throwing this year's pathetic game plan in the bin and start working on a new one in time for next year if he wants to coach past 2020.

The ANB botched handball to Fristch who should've been gifted an easy goal in the last quarter of last week sums up our cluster you know what of a game plan. Players are too nervous to have a shot and end up over possessing the thing.

Not disagreeing about having a reboot of the game plan, but why do you think our player's reluctance to shoot at goal is related to the game plan?   Seems to me it speaks more of a dramatic loss of confidence.  Are you saying that is a result of the game plan?  While it could be a factor, I doubt it explains it all.

Meant to respond to these earlier...

When speaking of the broader issue surrounding the why we are where we are etc and why do certain players lack the confidence / basic skills to do the 'normal' that most other clubs get right etc...

I would refrain from using the ANB horror handball in the square as a 'general' example.  While ANB is not alone and i appreciate he runs his butt off, tries his best and has done more than most of us in making it to AFL, he is also renowned for having the odd brain fade or two (or more occasionally) in every other match or so.  He's been doing it for years so not a good example of the "what is happening to our team" discussion.

It's just what you get when you play ANB regardless of the coach, game style, year etc.

He’s still a nervous wreck in pressers. The nervous stroking of the leg or the arm while he listens to the question is stock standard.

He’ll never be a media pro. Maybe we don’t need him to be.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
