I have never seen any other ruckman penalised with this rule. Ever.

Stop being so tall and strong Max.

The ruck rules state that that you cannot block another player from contesting the ball in a ruck contest. That is completely fine. Just pay it every time.

All anyone wants is consistency.

Surely by winning a 1 on 1 contest you are stopping the other player from contesting?

This it's a sensible rule that should only apply if a 3rd player stops a player from contesting or if you don't contest the ball yourself ie don't get the hit or don't try for it.

Was that the free against Max in the last quarter too just as we were getting close?

(Didn’t see much of the game until last 10 minutes)

One of the two free kicks for this was.  Jeff Dalgliesh was the umpire on both occasions.

No other ruck ever has this paid against.

Gawn rucking against a 6 foot tall player has every right use his arm to hold space, he can't sit there and have a small man jump on to him. I get he can't extent the arm to push off but that's not what he was doing at all.

Contrived rubbish.

Could not have us winning. Both were pathetic and as said, never applies to any other ruckmen.

Dalgleish should stay in Perth and continue to umpire poorly over there. No idea.

So it is not just OK, but 'magical', for Mr Chopsticks to fend off an opponent but Max defending his territory is not.

Thanks AFL.

Max was crucified today...if it wasn't that ridiculous "arm' penalty it was NOT being given frees for being so obviously held in the contest...there's shepherding...and theres holding...I know the difference...the Umpires obviously don't.

I ignore umpiring mistakes normally as it’s a hard game to umpire and I know I’m going to be one-eyed like every other footy fan in the country, but this made me rage. An umpire of 200+ games experience calling this garbage. Far out.

I did like “that’s ruck craft, big boy” though. Hopefully the umpires get some coaching on this rule during the week.

So what's the rule? Preventing the opposition ruckman from getting to the contest?

Ok, so at a centre bounce, how many players are allowed to play the ball? 2

At around the ground throw-ins/ball-ups, thanks to new rules of the game, how many players are allowed to play the ball? 2

So it's pretty clear these instances are a 1 on 1 contest. So once the ball is bounced, thrown up, thrown in, or whatever, it is now a contest between 2 players. How can an umpire rule that 1 of those players is preventing the other from contesting the ball? It is in fact already a contest between the 2, it is on, it is happening, they are both there, contesting.

This incorrect ruling, note, it is not in fact a rule, needs to be booted this year while, well, we suck. It cannot be allowed to interfere with our game in 2020. This needs to be addressed with the AFL immediately. If they want to change the rule to add some rubbish about a straight arm fend in a ruck contest, then so be it, all ruckmen need to be adjudicated on the same grounds, not just Max.

Both the AFL and those scumbag umpires can go and get s&##%@ far as I'm concerned ?

I know they want but i wish the club would say something to the AFL about this?

Appalling decisions. Made more ridiculous by the fact that if a bigger opponent  was rucking against him there is zero chance either of those decisions would have been paid.

Ruck man have been do that for 150 years.

As Maxy said #itsruckcraftbigboy

This is on the Club BB.  It needs to get serious.  Compile a series of incidents such as this one, as well as all the holds, over the shoulders etc and take it to the AFL for a "please explain!??"

Why Max is being unfairly targeted/penalised  for so called "straight arm block" such as this (which was a pretty  feeble extended arm & hardly a straight one anyway!)  but on the flip side the frees that are clearly there "for" are mostly being ignored.

He is so dominant in most matches i get the feeling the umps are actively (among some of them) umpiring his impact out of the match to the favour of the opp in order to even out matches he is involved in.

It's now on the FD & Club to grow a pair and officially raise it with the AFL.

We also need to raise the incident by whoever the umpire was today (Dalgleish?) who, in response to a "no prior" call from one of our boys to another who copped a holding the ball decision, said ... "it doesn't matter".  Since when do the rules of the game "not matter"??  Only when it's us on the receiving end maybe for this ump??

Not to mention the old blow the whistle then call play on trick. I've never seen that one before. It's a ripper.

The umpire in question is Dalgleish, dumb umpiring and no feel for the game.  A Western Australian who supports the Eagles.

You may remember we had him and Margetts ( another WA boy) against the Eagles on their turf this year. Hope we don't get them this week against the Eagles.

We won’t get him, but nevertheless he’s done his job and stymied the momentum and belief we could have had on a team that has been a little up and down this year.

Two nominated players contest the ruck.

If any other player stops a nominated player that is a free.

If one nominated ruckman stops the other through strength or guile that is ruck craft, providing no other rules are broken.

At almost every ruck contest the nominated ruckmen are attempting to prevent their opponent from reaching the ball but that is contesting the ball.

Ruckcraft 101 do not let your opponent get their hands on the ball, but according to idiot umpires if you are good that means a free kick to your opponent.

AFL please inform umpires that the nominated ruckmen are already contesting the ball, so no free unless another rule is broken or a non nominated player gets in the way.

Maybe we should put Spargo in the ruck, and say that the other ruckman are stopping him from contesting the ball because Spargo can't reach it before it's tapped out!

Pretty certain Dalgleish is the umpire who has been banned from umpiring the western derby for his obvious bias towards WCE.

Watch him umpire our game again this week and not pay a single ruck infringement against Gawn. Such is his incompetence.

Great to hear and see the mutterings of so many guys who used to think that this Umpiring thing was all in our imagination but thanks to the media and the"yellow scumbag maggots", hard to differentiate, they have managed to, from the start of last season, totally eradicate the best ruckman's dominance of this god forsaken game in the last twenty years..........

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
