I wonder if Hore would be a good forward. We are blessed with defensive options now. If we could swing one of them forward ala TMac (but in less terrible form) it would really help balance our list.

Frost is such a different hybrid of a defender. For someone who is 194cm, he has speed of a small running defender and can easily play on the small blokes like Walters. I'd give him first choice on Cameron next week.

Lever and Hore are brilliant intercept defenders. Something we haven't had since Jared Rivers. Once May and Lever are up and going Hore plays a floating defender In the same way as what Tom Stewart does down at Geelong. 

 

Definitely, and when we see the return of Neville and Hibberd, then Salem and Fritsch can be moved wingward, where we have been deficient all season.

    All of TMac, Smith and Weid played well, and all of have them have a far better tank than Preuss, which is as important as ever against Brisbane. Barring injury, I can't see a scenario where Preuss comes in.

    Hannan should be the first to get the chop. Came directly back into the seniors after a long layoff  and hasn’t gotten near it for two weeks. Needs to get hands on pigskin at Casey for a few weeks.

    Would like to see whichever of Kolodjashnij, Dunkley or Jordon performs best for Casey replace him.

    Petty and Wagner to go out pending the fitness of Hibberd and Lever.

    Having a plate reattached to the bone sounds full on. I ain’t a doctor or nothin but would surprised if Hibbo is back this week

    Harris Andrew will dominate playing on either T.Mac or Weideman... I think we need to bring in Pruess to nullify his game.

    I think Petty could be the one as we have Lever and Oscar as other backs.

    Actually thought Smith played a fair game and could have kicked 6, which would have impacted his future at the club quite dramatically.

    The real problem is we need a Jeff Farmer or young Jeffy type. Hopefully Bedford becomes that, but I would be looking at that role and another key forward and maybe another ruckman at season's end.

    I’m not in favour of rushing anyone but I am in favour of selecting obvious best 22 players if they are fit. Selecting them doesn’t automatically imply they are being rushed in as some in this thread have indicated.

    You would leave ANB in after yesterday's game and his previous ones this year?

    I am prepared to say that Corey Wagner, Lewis, Spargo, Stretch, JKH and even Dunkley off 3 games at Casey, are ahead of him in my eyes, but maybe not Goody's.

    I would like to get as many games into Petty as possible, as he will be a player for us and now is the time to play him where he will learn from the likes of May.

    Disagree mate. Preuss would do well for a quarter, but Andrews has a good tank and would end up leaving big Preuss in his dust for the rest of the game. Would be a bad move IMO. We also have Smith too remember.

    Weideman won’t be dropped but he was poor yesterday. Touched the prune 6 times, kicked a late goal. Rarely involved at any stage.

    He should be in this conversation but we just accept that sort of output as par for the course from him. 

    Blokes should have to earn spots, from youngest to oldest on the list. Bringing in another key forward for 2020 will ensure that Weid is kept honest and earns games on merit. 

    We were very fortunate Hogan was MIA for much of yesterday as result would likely have been different. Not something some will want to hear but there it is.

    Sadly he touched the prune about 20 times - only managing to mark it 4 times, otherwise just flat-handing it down to ground

    Preuss did well against Aliir Aliir by staying in the goal square and reducing his intercepting prowess further up the ground. He kicked 2 snags which is better than Weideman's output at this stage, regardless if he can't run out 4 quarters.

    Sure, did great in the first half, disappeared in the second.

    I like him, and think he'll be a weapon after another preseason or two, but he would disrupt the balance we saw on Saturday and his lack of fitness would cost us, particularly given it's so incompatible with how we're playing style wise and the speed and run of Brisbane. Sydney are a slower side so we got away with it for a half.

     

    If Lever and Hibberd are fit, they come in. Petty and Wagner are the ones to make way.

    But if there is any doubt on either of them, we shouldn't be risking it.

    ANB and Hannan struggled yesterday. Hannan has more upside and there's no obviously better player ready to come back until Melksham is fit, so they probably both stay.

    No idea why anyone would suggest bringing Preuss in when we've just seen TMac and T Smith kick 3 goals each, given Weideman is the most mobile of the three (i.e. the least like-for-like replacement for Preuss).

    Except for that fact Hogan is a hugely inefficient footballer who struggles at the MCG. Just as likely he would've dragged May to plenty of contests. Petty would've had a match up on Cox. And Freo would've had one less quick pressure player in the forward line. Those were the guys that hurt us all game. The vast majority of their goals came from our botched turnovers under pressure or creating free kicks with quick movement. 

    We would've lost yesterday if Freo had their full complement of running players, so Hogan was a factor there, but there's plenty of evidence to doubt that he was going to have a big game taking marks or kicking goals on May. A typical Hogan game with a few nice marks up the ground but a lot of poor contests inside 50 and bad kicking was most likely.

    Weideman wasn't poor. He did his job. Created a goal going back with the flight. Kept away from McDonald and Smith. He has to get better but unless we land a big name key forward dropping him after a game like yesterday would be coaching stupidity. Shuffling him out for a player of similar talent on the basis of earning games would stunt his development. He more than earnt his game yesterday if you watched him play rather than the stat sheet.

    I think Hannan gets a more than fair go from DL'ers. He hasnt done anything this year except show me his quickstep which is no good if you dont get the ball or cant outrun an opponent without falling to ground. And Id like to see some upside from Petty, but I cant see it. I keep hearing it is there though. Having said that, other than a good kick, Wiedermann gets a pass on here from little. Im a fan of Tim Smith. His efforts yesterday were very good. He seems to have got rid of his kicking yips.

    I watched. Had to check the stat sheet towards the end though to re-confirm he was actually out there.

    Might help his 'development' more to actually dominate competitive games of footy at Casey, take marks and kick repeatedly for goal. Week after week after week. That would build confidence far more than spending 95 minutes out of 100 simply filling out a guernsey and being disdainfully pushed out of the way by seasoned AFL defenders, which is what's happening now. Just a thought.

    Weideman is not earning his spot in this side. That's not healthy.

    Weid's played 2 VFL games this year
    v Footscray: 2.3, 7 marks (5 contested), 21 touches
    v Willy: 3.1, 6 marks (3 contested), 14 touches

    He had 25 goals in 10 games, being in the best 5 times last year in the VFL with a strong finish to the year. I wouldn't go as far as saying he's dominated but he's been very good at VFL level when he's sent back there and if his form drops off I'm happy for him to go back to the VFL again.

    But since he's came back in to the side he's had:
    Crows - very good game aside from missing the chance to win it
    Pies - decent game where he did some good things after Moore beat him early. 5 marks, kicked 2 goals. Solid
    And yesterday's game.

    It was a lot of running around for very little of the ball but sometimes that's the reality of a 2nd or 3rd key forward. He didn't get a chance to go in to the ruck which is often when he finds the ball - they used Tommy Mc in that role to get him in to the play (and out of the forward line where he stuffed up for 3/4's). The play often went through Tommy (28 disposals), Petracca (22 disposals) and Tim Smith who was running with Luke Ryan. Similarly Hunt and Hannan were often at full forward as we like mobility to get out the back in that role. The Weid was the odd man out in terms of getting the play but I can handle him in that role as long as it isn't every week. He took a couple of nice grabs, kicked a good goal, created another important one with 2 efforts and halved enough contests.

    I can't agree with any of that. Was ordinary against the Crows quite aside from the missed winner, did nothing against the Filth save for a a couple of moments of involvement late, was a non-event for most of yesterday.

    A couple of nice marks and some decoy forward running in 300 minutes of footy. Sorry but my bar is set a little higher than that.

    We all see things differently.

      The Sir Doug Nicholls Round kicks off in Darwin with a Top 4 clash between the Suns and the Hawks. On Friday night the Swans will be seeking to rebound from a challenging start to the season, while the Blues have the Top 8 in their sights after their sluggish start. Saturdays matches kick off with a blockbuster between the Collingwood and Kuwarna with the Magpies looking to maintain their strong form and the Crows aiming to make a statement on the road. The Power face a difficult task to revive their season against a resilient Cats side looking to make amends for their narrow loss last week. The Giants aim to reinforce their top-eight status, while the Dockers will be looking to break the travel hoodoo. The sole Saturday game is a critical matchup for both teams, as the Bulldogs strive to cemet their spot in the top six and the Bombers desperately want break into the 8. Sundays start with a bottom 3 clash between the Tigers and Kangaroos with both teams wanting to avoid the being in wooden spoon contention. The Round concludes with the Eagles still searching for their first win of the season, while the Saints look to keep their finals hopes alive with a crucial away victory.       And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

      There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

      At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.
