WESTERN Bulldogs premiership hero and former No.1 pick Tom Boyd has announced his shock retirement from the game. 

The Dogs confirmed on Thursday that the key forward will leave the game effective immediately due to the physical and emotional toll of AFL football.

I'd be very happy if Jon Patton could do the same for us ie 60 games 50 goals and BOG in the Granny. Actually let's use Pruessy as the equivalent on about 4/10 of the money!!!

Wow.  That was some fall for $7 million dollar man.  I suppose running around in the VFL wasn’t to his liking?  Payout for 19, no payout for 20/21.

Gives them a mid year draft pick.  Probably going to see more mid year retirements now the draft is in play.

Whate ever is best for him but its sad that he couldnt have a full career.

No salary for 2020 and 2021.

Very strange to say the least. If it wasn't the Bulldogs who generally play well in the morality area I would be suspicious.

He lived the dream.  Reached the top.

AFL is a tough gig.  Better to go out now than wallow miserably in the Reserves out West.

Well now there’s a quick easy answer to the question ‘Who’s the biggest wasted talent?’ when it repeatedly gets asked on footy forums!

He won a flag and made a bit of money. Good on him and best of luck to him.

Wish the boy well for the future, but with his manager, $2m won't be left on the table.

There might be a saving to the Dogs and more cap space in 20/21 and a mid year draft pick, but don't always believe what you read.

He will get most of that contracted $7m is my belief.

If properly invested, he will have an income for life, even if he never works again.

Made himself 4 mil and got a flag in a short period of time without needing to play too many games. Thats more than most afl players in 10 year careers. 

Best of luck to him and his future endeavours hope he can get healthy

Sydney will try to do the same with Buddy's contract if he can't get back on the ground. 

The Bulldogs and any other club can now go and offer $1M per year to any available player for X number of years and when they fall over before the contract end,  "cancel the contract".

Not quite.

First Boyd’s contract could have been heavily front loaded and even if not he has retired and done a deal to end his contract.

Buddy or more particularly the Swans can not do that as the AFL passed the Buddy rule as they were furious with the Swans at the time.

read he was paid 1.7 mill first year , so yes it was front loaded 

what did he really cost bulldogs ?

Pick 6 , Griffen ( 400 a year of his salary too ?? ) 

what was the full deal ?  

 

im pretty sure any team would do the deal in a heartbeat to win a grand final 

 

Money is irrelevant if you help deliver a cup.

I believe the salary cap for early retirement is treated differently for trades v free agents

Lucky he played well in the Grand Final otherwise he’d go down as one of the biggest flops taken at number 1 of all time.

that is correct apparently for a free agent it just goes into the salary cap irrespective of whether it is actually paid or not. The rationale is that free agency involves compensatory picks so the whole deal must be honoured. ( Sounds strange I know).

For a traded player they are treated as any other contracted player. If they retire due to career ending illness the payout goes into the salary cap for the year in which paid.

If however the illness is not career ending it is a negotiation between the player and the club.

Tippet did not get his full payout for example...

Because the ankle reconstruction Tippett had in October wasn’t a career-ending injury, Swans football manager Tom Harley has been able to negotiate a reduced figure on his payout.

“We won’t have to carry his salary for the full term of his three years remaining,” Harley told SEN radio.

“He was contracted for three years prior to that so it certainly won’t be that.”

Had it been a career-ending injury, Sydney would have been forced to pay Tippett the full amount of his contract over the next three years.

“Injuries have played a part in his decision,” Harley said.

“He had a full ankle reconstruction last year. There are strict definitions around what constitutes career-ending injuries. It means you aren’t able to play and that isn’t what’s happened to Kurt.”

Tom Boyd's experience highlights the enormous pressure which comes with being number one pick and getting traded for a big pay packet, something which apparently never sat well with him. Grant mentioned in his meeting with the press that the contract and money was not spoken of when Boyd told the club of his decision. Grant was also not surprised by the decision, knowing as he did of Boyd's struggles with physical and mental fitness. Boyd doesn't sound like the kind of man who is motivated by money.  I watched the interview he did for Headspace last year on the Bulldog's website. To hear him say he couldn't sleep for nearly six weeks due to anxiety, and suffered from panic attacks while only driving his car around before receiving help from the club psychologist, shows what an enormous effort he must have put in for his team in the finals and in the Grand Final in 2016. 

He will always be remembered by the Bulldogs and their fans as a hero for helping deliver the long awaited Premiership. I wish him the best for his future. Sometimes we forget how young these football players are, and the pressures which are placed on them. All of them have different personalities, and react to these pressures in different ways. 

I can't help wondering whether he'll play for Hawthorn, Geelong or Collingwood when he comes back in a year or two. 

Another player who has 'lost the passion for the game'

Not a player that will have 'mercenary' attached to his name forevermore, unlike another #1 pick I can think of.  Integrity, match winner, premiership hero is how Boyd will be remembered. 

At 23 he isn't even at the age where big guys reach their peak.  Who knows in a few years of being carefree in football terms and recovered from back injury, he may come back to the game.  Worth keeping a watch on.  Under AFL rules if he comes back (even as early as next year) he can nominate the club he wants to play with in the eos supplementary draft.

While he hasn't fulfilled his career he has fulfilled every football player's dream.

Erm...no. The only reason this contract is cancelled is because Boyd wanted it to be. Ordinarily, retiring players (see Kurt Tippett) still get paid their contract if the club agrees for them to go and free a spot on the list. Boyd obviously wanted as clean a break as possible, and not to rort the Dogs given how much they've paid him already. Not many players will agree to that.

He's already won a flag. Not like he's been stuck at a cellar dweller. Having said that, above three clubs usually attract these kind of deals because they ask the question. I'd hope we do the same in a couple of years.

Can't help but wonder whether the Bulldogs themselves contributed to Boyd's unhappiness and mental struggles.  Didn't Boyd have a dust up with a team mate over his salary a few years ago?  And by some accounts 2017 was not a good time at the Kennel with some high profile players falling out of favour with the coach; some since traded.  A huge amount of inferred pressure (from internal sources) on someone in Boyd's position who for various reasons struggled to play many games let alone perform at the level of a $1m a year player. 

Really feel for the guy.
