Why was Joel brought back onto the ground (JLT 2) when he was grimacing in pain while doing a fitness test along the boundary line in the second qtr. It might not have been captured on film but I saw it at the ground.

Goodwin claimed it was due to rotations, however Richmond set a precedent in 2016 by playing 1 or 2 players short in the last quarter of a pre season game V's Port at Etihad and the AFL community were cool and understanding of that. Why didn't we do likewise?

The footy club stuffed up and need to own the mistake and ensure it doesn't happen again as Joel has wasted 50 to 75% of what was supposed to be a promising year for him.

Great post.

If I was Joel Smith, I'd be sounding out Hawthorn, who appear to be light years ahead dealing with complex ankles (Scully) and knees (O'Meara).  We can't even get the basics right by respecting significant pain concurrent with an acute injury.

Misson is retiring at the end of the season. Have they found a replacement yet?

That is the risk we run and you could not blame him if he did.

Amateur hour all right. A lot of amateur medicos on this site. Wouldn't know a knee from an elbow. Going off half-cocked. Must be the time of day.

It's a massive fail by many at the club.

I spoke to a player a few days after that match. We went in with a squad 2 less than what we were entitled to,  we then lost 2 players to injury before halftime .

Consequently, this particular player (among others I assume)  had to play far more game time than planned. That player has been hampered by injury this year also. Coincidence maybe but who would know.... Nobody at the club that's for sure.

Amatuer hour.

Crap. Who's the player? How was he affected? 'Coincidence but who would know....'? Is that the best you can do? An outbreak of idiocy in response to a parent's social media gripe. Get a grip.

He is not as untrained as you might think. TGR actually has some background in Physiotherapy from memory. Not at all uneducated.

It's worse than that. We were allowed 24 or 26 players on the day and chose to go in with 22. They could have easily had one of the extras on standby or even warm up and come on once the injuries started mounting. Pathetic managment.

Hi Misso!

How about a bit of respect for the club that gave you a shot Shaun. Understand you are upset but tell the club, not the world.

We don’t have a hope of attracting talent in the trade period at this rate

From the article:

Responding to other messages on Facebook, [Shaun] Smith said: “Clearly the conditioning is not up to scratch and players who have had opps (operations) have not been managed well”.

“Guess whose fault is that?

“Don’t even get me started about the mismanagement of my son.”

and then ...

The Herald Sun understands Joel Smith is frustrated by his injury but is not unhappy with the management of it by club medicos.

Melbourne is aware of his father’s comments.

Well well well. I was  at Casey the day Joel Stayed on the park and I said to myself "This bloke is Clearly injured why is he still on the on the park"?

If I was his manager and Dad I would be asking the same questions , Demanding answers and wanting Heads to roll!

Clearly Clearly NOT GOOD ENOUGH but oh so typical!!

Agree with this. I can understand Shaun venting on social media if he'd tried discussing this with the club and git nowhere but if he's done this without any dialogue with the club then it's poor form. Sounds like a dad who's frustrated that his son is out injured.

Nar mate not so, respect needs to be earnt and keeping a player who clearly was on one leg is tantamount to the OH&S guidelines of workplace and also Bad people management.

Yep too many chiefs and not enough Foot soldiers.

So in medical decisions, who should be accountable???

Amateur hour is right.   Amateur covering their backsides:

Misson said “So he’ll probably need to unload that for a couple of weeks, so if we unload it for two or three weeks it’s probably a similar amount of time to reload him and get him ready to play again.

“We’re not putting a time frame on it, he’s feeling a lot better now so he could potentially start loading again at the end of this week, but it’s a little bit open ended.”

Goodwin quizzed ............................at a press conference.

“Joel had acute awareness of his groin,” Goodwin told reporters.

“We certainly respect groin injuries and the load around that so that’s what we’re going to do as a club.”

Anyone ever hear such [censored].

At least say "sorry we stuffed up".

Gary Pert should order an enquiry or a royal commission or something

I have been wondering for a few years now - why is it that sports/conditiong coaches outrank the Sports Physicians and Physiotherapists at lots of AFL clubs...... who makes the game day decisions about ok or not to play on an injury? the lines have never been so blurred

WelL l as a fully qualified Phys Ed Teacher and Grad Dip in Sports Exercise science, But OLD Guy, I would like to offer my services to MFC!

.The response might be....... Ah Picket Fence, ah thanks but no thanks!

Too radical!

Shaun Smith has had a long battle with his concussion based injuries suffered during his 20 years in the AFL/VFL system. He has been long campaigning for changes and has donated brain tissue to science for research in the area. From what i understand he didnt really want his son playing AFL in the first place, but of course left the decision to him. He would be one of the first to question any perceived lack of proper management in any case of an injury to his son, and so you can see where he is coming from.  Its not at all surprising to hear from him in this case.

We wish Shaun all the best in his efforts to recover.

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
