Agree on the first one but will have to check the replay on the other. It looked to me that he needed a teleportation device to get out of the protection zone.

Went back and checked the second one and Harmes did enter the protected zone (10m) looked like about 7m. Problem was OMac skipped sideways about 5 times, away from the Mark and made it look like Harmes was much closer. Can someone enlighten me why  OMac would do that? I understand why it is done when someone is kicking for goal but not in this case.

me and you Wyl was at Ammos watching it on the hill couldn't take much more with about 4 mins to go

Straight from the horses’ (literally) mouth:

And Harmes was a crucial factor in his side’s win, gathering 31 disposals and shutting down Jaeger O’Meara in the final term – a challenge he thoroughly enjoyed.

“I loved it. Usually when I’m playing pretty good footy I’m playing on someone and beating them and then winning my own footy and I thought I did that today,” he said.

“I love the challenge of playing on good players so hopefully next week if I get the role again I’ll try and do it to my best ability. “

So why hasn’t he been doing this role all year Goodwin?!

Probably the compound fracture to his knuckle he had 2 months ago had something to do with it. He only had a week off.

Great win boys really great team effort. It gives us hope and that's what we need ATM. Harmes is a gun as is Gawn.

His good moments seem to be when he doesn't have time to over think in. When he's acting on instinct, or needs to think quickly, he looks a million bucks.

And that, in a nutshell, is why he will help win us a flag. So all you Petracca doubters, [censored] off

So....

With 2 mins to go.... WHY WAS OLIVER ON THE BENCH TILL THE SIREN???

Maybe because most of his handballs missed their target.

I said this in the game day thread and feel it’s worth repeating because of how pathetic they were. Worse than normal

I HATE THE F&&$)(;/ING umpires.

Useless bunch of [censored].

Since the sack everyone mega thread is closed for the week, perhaps we should suggest Andre Gianfagna be sacked or relegated to some bush league for missing the most blatant of 50s today in the history of the game.

Yeah I felt like confidence was a big part of it.

Played a Neeld like down the boundary game for half of it but when we backed ourselves and switched or went through the guts, we clicked into gear.

Definitely gives us some hope and belief.

So good to be at the G for a win today.

So that the bloke who was trying to kick it towards 50 would be less likely to drill a pass towards leading targets in front of goal. All players do this, nearly all of the time on the mark.

So so many people listening so much to the commentators, yes Omac missed two balls, one would have been an intercept possession, but the kick was also too close to him. Running from 4m away at the footy v 10m makes it much more difficult to read. The second one was a horrible kick from Lewis which forced him to stop and would have had to change direction to run at the football. The commentators had a duo at him but clearly over simplified both situations.

Frost did 10 minutes of compitent football, but even in that patch would have lost us the game had the umpires called the throw.

We used the ball so poorly, but also it was not general play that hawthorn scores from but rather good chains of ball movement. We were the better team, but also lucky to win.

Keilty had one great bit of play, but was a genuine liability on the field. I only watched it on TV but there were at least 7-8 times were it clearly looked like his leading patterns were rubbish looking for easy football. He is just learning forward craft and I think he definitely needs to keep learning in vfl. Hopefully Wiedeman can come back in after a strong showing tomorrow

It feels like our players are reaching peak fitness. after 7 Rnds.  And having a little more speed around the ground helps.

I spent ages trying to figure out the relevance of this stat or the point they were trying to make...

A lot to like today. I think this group has really come together and are starting to gel.

Just watching the replay, I’ve got a question for Jake Melksham - why when you had a minute on the clock and you’ve just received a short pass to waste time, and you are winning by 5 points, why would you pull the kick to the middle of the forward line and pick out McEvoy. It won’t get spoken about, because we won, but why. Surely the kick is to the line in the hope that it gets knocked through. I found it mind boggling at the time and upon review.

Not trying to be negative as there was much more to like than not this week, but it could have cost us the win. I hope Goodwin reviews it

I'm back on the Hunt as a forward bandwagon.

Will get easier for him too as the team improves.

I dont care really what anyone else thinks but harmes undid all of his good work by those 2 50m penalties. we were set up behind the ball when he gave them away. So he basically kicked 2 goals for the hawks today. Which is unforgivable. Learn the bloody rules and run away from the ball carrier ffs.

He kicked a goal which he owed us which half made up for his mistakes.

It's a shame because other than that he played quite well. But in an era where stats are overrated. I'd say about 10 midfield touches is equivalent to 1 goal. so I'd say 2 goals from garlett is as effective as about 20 touches from a mid. so Harmes giving 2 goals away is basically 20 of his disposals gone to waste. that's how I see it and that's how I value goals/midfield touches.

He absolutely smashed O Meara.  Destroyed him.

Clear BOG.

I agree.

but Harmes essentially walked into the goal square and booted 2 goals for hawthorn. Do you know how valuable goals are in this game.

I'd prefer o'meara touching it 30 times then harmes kicking 2 goals for hawthorn.

Great win.....

Not sure why our players continue to want to go through the middle of the ground & turnover the ball so poorly, Gawn classic example late in the game up by 10 points play the % & go down the boundary FFS!

Clarkson is showing signs of being a sore lose.  Blunt Clarkson

About the Dees:

"They'll be dancing from the rooftops tonight – but they didn't play outstanding footy, either, today.

"A really good side would have really hurt Melbourne with some of the opportunities we had today – and that's the disappointing part," he said.

"We couldn't sit there and say, 'Melbourne's pressure was just enormous and that's what stopped us from dropping marks and missing kicks and that sort of stuff'.

All that may be true but poor form from Clarkson.

Watched his presser. Don’t think he’s being a sore loser so much as giving his honest view of the game. None of what he said could be said to be untrue. Hawks had the better first and last quarters and we had the better middle quarters. We punished them a little better when we had the momentum. The game wasn’t an amazing spectacle but we ground out the win with a return to basics.

Clarkson also described us as one of if not the best contested ball side in the league so it wasn’t all poo pooing the opposition. His overriding point seemed to be that both sides are capable of better than what they dished up today and in the season so far. Which is true.

Could get two more polar opposites.

$cully the prima Donna No.1 draft pick with no buy into the club who lies to a great legend of our club, takes the money and runs.

Harmes the player who doesn't get picked up in the draft, has to fight for his spot and bleeds for the club.  His relationship with Jones one of the most loyal players in the modern world of the loyaltyless AFL is also fitting.

Love Harmesy and Jonesy, whom I also thought had some good moments today.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
