Coniglio should still get some nice fat contract offers, knee knack or not

Positives are that he is already slow and has already shown previous knee injuries didnt affect his output. Negatives are that he will now be even slower and has bung knees. There is more risk attached now.

Anderson, Rowell, Kemp, Serong, Stephens, Ash and Green are all ahead of Henry

Rowell and Anderson will most likely be taken before us due to GC PP. Kemp is a utility which we don’t need more of, Green a big bodied mid. Ash has low % of contested ball and is too high risk, is also a HBF which we have Hore and Salem for already. Henry fills a genuine hole in our list which we have been trying unsuccessfully for years to fill with players like ANB, Hunt, Spargo and Hannan. Enough is enough.

Why not Serong then? Accomplished as both a small forward and a midfielder. He’s got decent pace, skills and smarts, so he fits the bill as both. Top 5-10 talent who fills a need.

I’d still love Anderson though! He looks like he’ll be a serious jet and would add a ton of class and X factor to our midfield and forward line.

They won't give Suns a PP they don't need any more kids, they need seasoned players, think they will again give them 1st access to state league players and possibly mid first/second round picks which they must trade

Anyone suggesting taking Henry with pick 2 is a clown. He's not even top 3 of the WA boys, kid can play but Freo and the side with the next 8 picks will roll over laughing if we offer pick 2 for Henry.

I would love Anderson but think we'll have pick 4ish I'm leaning towards Kemp and playing him forward while he builds a tank

serong looks too slow for me. 'decent pace' isnt good enough for me. we are so slow that we need blistering pace.  Ash for me.

Speaking to a recruiter from another team last night, we'd want Rowell or Anderson if we finish that low but Hayden Young is a name climbing up the draft boards.

Personally I feel a pick 3 on a HBF, a position we actually have talent already would be a waste

I think you just take best available at that point in the draft whoever that may be, that's my opinion anyway. There's plenty other ways to fill needs.

We will finish 17th and GC17 will get a priority pick

Nothing surer!

Does it matter?

Haven’t we learned from years of past experience that the “top-X-then-daylight” is a fallacy?

That draft picks aren’t a panacea?

I’m just thankful that we have a decent club structure, development setup and culture, so that no kids are expected to come in and carry the club straight away, and they can develop properly at a reasonable rate.

No more burning kids through the weight of expectation.

It might not be ideal value for a top pick but if you get a really good player I wouldn't worry about that. Worst case scenario we have 2 good really good back flankers, but best case is Salem finally goes in to the midfield and gives us the gun ball user we need in there.

Every summer Salem trains with the mids before being put to half back because we just don't have good options. Unless we draft or trade for a ready made classy mid I think this is the summer to just leave Salem with the mids in to the season and hope we fix the backline in other ways.

Outside Runners
1. Ed Langdon - out of contract
Pros: Excellent runner and ball winner
Cons: Ball use, likely to cost a 2nd round pick

2. Brad Hill - IN contract
Pros: elite runner, solid enough ball user/winner
Cons: Likely to cost a big contract and a big trade package  (pick 10-15)

3. Brandon Ellis - RFA
Pros: Excellent runner and penetrating kick
Cons: Shaky at the contest and ball use can be unpredictable

4. Harry Cunningham - FA
Pros: Good speed and endurance, could be cheap
Cons: Shaky ball users and winner

5. Tom Cutler - out of contract
Pros: Good size, long kick
Cons: Best suited at half back, ball winner but maybe not the smartest player

6. Karl Amon - out of contract
Pros: Good runner, neat kick
Cons: Small, inconsistent

7. Stephen Hill - FA
Pros: Classy user
Cons: Ageing, expensive contract, recent injuries

8. Adam Tomlinson - out of contract
Pros: Good runner, big body who can play 2nd ruck
Cons: Not the most natural ball user or creative player

9. Jack Newnes - FA
Pros: Good runner, long kick
Cons: Average decision making and inconsistent at the contest, seems to have peaked a while ago

The question will be What can we do with Gold Coast and how can we work our way into a big position of strength. They will have Pick 1, they wont get a PP until end of 1st round if at all. They need experienced players, they need ready made AFL depth. We would love Rowell, he is legit ready to go Sam walsh ability with Dangerfield strenght and Selwood leadership.

Think outside the box and how we might get our mits on PIck 1.. a swap of first rounders, players swap, future picks swap? Do we have a Luke Hodge type in our midst that might be of interest? ( i mean we dont but..)

I don't care who we get as long as they have silky skills. Salem aside our side are mainly in and under players with no handballing or kicking skills. Those kept need to improve in this are over summer and get ready made players in draft with some decent skills.

Small forwards
1. Dan Butler - Out of contract
Pros: quick, kicked 30 goals in flag season, good pressure
Cons: small/light frame and lots of recent injuries, 1 hit wonder?

2. Anthony McDonald-Tippa - OOC
Pros: Great pressure, accurate kick
Cons: Likely to cost a lot in a trade and contract, likely keen to stay

3.Jamie Elliott - FA
Pros: gun goal kicker at his best, free agent
Cons: expensive contract with lots of risk given injuries, has he missed too much footy?

4. James Rose - OOC
Pros: kicks a lot of neafl goals but can't stick a regular spot
Cons: probably not very good!

5. Lewis Taylor - OOC
Pros: knows how to get the ball and has some creativity
Cons: is Lewis Taylor

Tom Papley has a year to run on his contract, but there is media speculation he maybe coming back to Victoria.  Articles mention the Blues, but I think Horse and Tom would be looking at the best possible deal.

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
