Spotlight on a Hibbard.

unsighted until we were on top, then did a couple of link up moves from half back.  Haven’t seen him called out, but I thought he was well down, and it was a bit of a downhill skiing performance.

i loved his bull tackle later in the game, but he doesn’t get it a lot or use it well from the middle.  Hoping he is just warming up, but not at the top of his game.

played a great game, looked composed and prepared to back himself in tough spots.  Liked his game

Super shout outs to Max, Preuss (slowed later, but showed enough), Oliver from Q2.

our game emerged half way through q2.  Up until then, it was the last 3 weeks all over again.  Hope we have turned the corner

The Opp will also need to put their tallest defender (or someone tallish that has the ability to leap like AA).  And not every super tall defender will have the off the mark speed of an AA.

Good points RN and if we win the clearances and deliver the ball inside 50 well enough for Pruess to smash packs or to negate his direct opponent peeling off on Weid/Tmac oppositions will have to worry more about him

Yeah, just thought Id look it up out of interest.

Also saw that we are the 6th most inexperienced team in the AFL.  You may as well say we are equal 2nd most inexperienced such is the small gap between us and Carlton, who are 2nd.

 

A good reminder of why we might still have some inconsistencies, and why the future is so bright   None of our core group of talented kids are even close to playing 100 games yet.

Patience is still required and Marty in place of Nev would have tipped the scales to single 2nd place!

Maybe that  also explains our form which we have started 2019 which is at the bottom of list similar to our place on the ladder.

Only saw parts of the game, but I thought we turned that corner, a bit at least against the bummers.  In terms of endeavour persistence and just plain head down hard at it. 

I grant you we were poor delivering into the forwards which allowed them to clear it and apply too much pressure on Frost and OMac So I did get some encouragement from that game but did not expect such a better result. 

If we can pressure the saints and stop the ball coming back so quick , another step back to 2018 form.   Need Petracca Viney Melky and Hibberd to step up one more notch

Oscar has to go in my opinion. Fumbles....What the hell is with the fumbles? Numerous times we looked to be clean out of the middle or defence only for one of our mids (Harmes and Trac probably the biggest offenders) to fumble it and turn it over. I am putting this down to confidence issues as it was much more evident when we were getting towelled up in the first half.   

I thought Trac was pretty good tonight, but you still feel like he is stuck in 2nd gear. Just needs to find a way to get more involved. I firmly believe he can be our De Goey and possibly even better. Not sure if its a work rate issue or just learning the game. Would love to see him lead for the ball better.  He actually looked really good one out in forward line last week. 

The forward line suits Hunt, but he still needs to learn how to side-step. If he can somehow add some evasiveness to his game he could have kicked 4 or 5 last night. 

I know this sounds like I'm having a major dig at a good performance and win, but I still fear against some more efficient teams this game would have been all over by half time like it was against the cats. It was however nice to see us improve our efficiency inside 50. 

Something that had me baffled though was how we played in the last quarter when we were protecting our lead.  Inside of winning it out of the middle or defensive 50 and rushing it to the other end only to bomb it, we slowed it down and picked out players and leads. We looked composed and polished. When the ball rebounded, we won it back and didn't panic. Why can't we balance this style of play with our manic pressure? It just seems our gameplan is far too favoured towards playing the territory game at the sacrifice of possession. We have demonstrated so many times that winning i50s does not equal more scoring and in more cases causes more scores against. Our mids gets far too committed to pushing into the attack and when it goes over there heads, it leaves our backs exposed with forwards getting goal side. In my opinion, this has to change if we are to make any challenge this season. I honestly don't believe the addition of May or Lever would make a difference.  Most defenders don't do well running towards their defensive goal. 

We really need to [censored] the saints next week and make a statement.

We all know but do not acknowledge: 'You can't do that to the Swans - and key players protecting their assets from Collingwood, Geelong, Carlton, Essendon, Port Adelaide, Adelaide, Brisbane Lions, GWS'. So there we go again. Everyone else is open slather for umpiring and tribunal appearances to hear (only) the bad news of the football 'sages' in the AFL system.

Re the highllighted part.  Its our youth and immaturity.  We lost the game vs Geelong late last year because we didn't slow it down, keep control to run down the clock.  We learnt from that and slowed the tempo vs Crows and Eagles and won two close games.

This year we had forgotten those lessons and without Lewis or runners to remind players we reverted to old, ingrained habits ie our players are programmed to play on, at a ballistic rate so it doesn't come naturally to it slow down.

When Jones was asked after the game what Goodwin whispered in his ear at 3/4 time, he answered something like '...to remind the players how to play...'  Wouldn't be surprised if it was to remember those games last year when we did/didn't play tempo. 

We will get better at changing the tempo the more we lose/don't lose because of it and if our leaders remember to direct the play accordingly.

That incident occurred half way though the second. Oscar was concussed late in the 3rd quarter (4.36 to go) in a huge spoil that repelled a Sydney inside 50. In the intervening period betwen the buddy incident and when he got concussed we played our best footy of the match, kicking of 8 of 10 goals.  And in that period Oscar worked super hard and his gut running was big factor in creating that web zone Sydney struggled so badly to penetrate.

Omac has not had a great start to the season but was ok on Friday. Not great, ok. His opponent for much of the game had one mark inside 50 for the game and a solitary point. And  had the equal high number of one per-centers with Hore (who played one more quarter than Omac). He did his job. 

You forgot the mention the two successive leaks in the 1 qtr ... resulting in goals to the Swans.

Not to detract from your post, which I thought very considered and on the money, but this particular extract resonates highly for mine.

Kind of a sliding doors approach but a very poignant reminder that footy is a fickle master and you need to bring your best efforts all day, and have an ounce of two of luck.

Very happy with the win and some aspects of playing style but it can so easily go the other way.

Better teams, or even the Swannies on a better more accurate day will deliver pain.

Still a long way I think to go. Happy to have broken the duck.

Oh and he is not really responsible for the injuries or operations or fitness of our players Any blame there to Football Dept and Dave Mission and Medico's. he didn't appoint any one either.

Gibberish like this regarding Pert at this stage is uncalled for and it is no surprise to me that you and beezlebub would accept it.

Probably the worst team we have put on the park on paper since 2013 but they worked really hard as a team to get themselves back into the contest. Magnificent result of which they should be proud.

Defensively we played much further back towards their goals and whilst they seemed to transition out of defence easily they were thwarted often at the centre of the ground with our better and more composed defenisive set up

Frost did well on Buddy who had many of his kicks up the ground. OMac was beaten yet again but Hore stood up really well and Salem was composed. Not a fan of the Wagners but they both worked extremely hard all night. Hunt was dangerous in the fwd line and did well with his two goals. Pruess had a few Swans fearful in contests which is fantastic to see.

At one point in the 2nd qtr Heeney had more posessions than Oliver Brayshaw harmes and Jones combined but they too managed to turn it around.

You could almost see our mojo being brought back to life. Now to back it up against the Aints.

Is this the round 4 22 player team or the whole list? Looks like the first post is just the 22.

 

Can you easily pull the age/games for the round 4 selected 22 of all 18 clubs?

Yes another good point Pennant.  I reckon IF we continue to play him deep and as back up for Big M we are on a winner here.

He effectively becomes the No.1 or 2 go to forward.  Great foil for T-daddy and Weid as you say.

Hunt, Jeffy and hopefully an in form / fit Spargo will add the speed/clean up needed at ground level to take advantage of the crumbs and pressure rebounding opponents.

He played well but ironically so did Olir Olir.....the size differences were very noticeable and on a lesser defender it could be very interesting as well as freeing up the others. A crumber would be handy like an inform Garlett.

Here's the thing for me ...Allir was ALWAYS going to play well and be instrumental coming off the HB line. . Preuss not only kept him honest...provided a target...but hey kicked goals and chopped out for Max.

It's a no brainer...

It's hard to tell how much of Preuss decline during the match was injury or endurance.He had absolutely zero tank at while at North.

I won't be expecting him to kick 2 goals every week. He will be very inconsistent and frustrate a lot until he can build his tank.
