Someone (apologies I can't remember who) made the excellent analogy that it was like a hard screen in basketball- the type that leads to a foul - where you lean into it and give the player a sold bump. As opposed to bracing and standing your ground - which is legal if you are not moving.

May put a very hard and deliberate block on berry. And unfortunately for all concerned hit his chin. As soon as he did so he was gonski. Again the club acknowledged that. If he didn't put the extra in they would have argued he was innocent.

I agree and refer to my previous that May made a statement we would not shirk and would not be moved. Berry does appear to have hit his head on Mays shoulder.

The head is sacrosanct. The look is important.

The club should now make a statement that we expect the same consistency when any of our players is hit in the head or when they are the recipient of any incident that looks bad..

We must insist that we will refer similar events to the Commission for similar action. Particularly we will look at the team we are playing next

I have the feeling we are have not yet worked out how to play the new 666 system. It would appear we have picked.players to suit regulations that have now changed to a significant degree. On top of that we have had a number of players recovering from major surgery. I think that our last half of the season will be better that the first half. I suspect that by the end of April there will be a lot of disgruntled supporters on Demonland

in my opinion may should have never got charged for standing his ground,some responsibilty must go to the other player to be aware of whats around him, he clearly wasnt watching what he was about to run into.In my playing days you knew you were going to be belted so you stayed aware and protected yourself or took avasive action.I cant remember too many concussions back in the hard days of afl/vfl the players played hard but fair tough footy,with occasional exception,like Mathews whak on bruns,the players knew to be aware of what could happen on the ground[what happens on the ground stays on the ground]would love to hear jeff crouch opinion of todays players.he umpired some of toughest players of all time

Why don't we put the wind up the AFL and take out a court injunction which if feasible would never find him guilty based on Evidence.

Old man rivers you probably didn't have to wear a seatbelt on your way to the ground and you could drink all you want and drive home.

The AFL and its preferred interests will cull the Dees by any means, to generate specific results in the fixture, for specific interests and already, it looks like this has begun in the pre-season and is very likely to continue into the start of the season under the auspice of 'once penalised', forever blacklisted.

it's not a new 2019 rule.....just a one off crap interpretation

it hinged mainly around high contact, medium impact

medium impact has meant an injury (concussion etc) or could not play on.....but not in this case....go figure

Like I've said before, I agree with you on just everything. Like you I don't want to glorify the Gladiator days where playing with a punctured lung or broken ribs was a symptom of that weird phenomenon called manlihood. In the days of the gladiators an elbow to the head of an oncoming opponent was deemed ok. I recall Hardemann doing just that to an oncoming Sam Kekovich in the early 70's. I recall feeling uneasy. I played Under 16 Football for Sunshine, then a VFA side. I played in the ruck against Laurie Sandilands in a final and kicked 2 goals that day. I recall the sheer brutality, the eye for an eye mentality. I recall Jack Storey haranguing me at half time during that final for not taking out their captain, Lindsay James, in a sandwich tackle which probably would have killed him - probably me included because he was air borne, our captain tailgating his [censored] - what they called a shirt front in those days. 

I grew up watching Soccer - my father was a very talented player - and the notion that maiming your opponent was a totally alien concept.

The above is my answer to the good old days when knuckle men ruled and players with the skill of Blight, Wells, Greig, Flower, Wilson and Alves were almost despised. Good riddance to them dark days.

I still maintain May was/is innocent. He simply stood his ground. In a high contact game like Aussie Rules, those situations are unavoidable. Gone are the days of Mathews, Brereton, Scott and Dipierdomenico. I rest my case.

I don't think this was a bump.  He didn't line him up, he didn't hit him hard.  All he really did was brace for impact, effectively screening, to stop him continueing to the next phase of the play.

He tucked his elbows in, braced for the hit,  and the fact he stepped back after the contact shows he absorbed part of the impact force himself. 

He is allowed to shepherd to stop the player being involved in thur next phase of play. His other options were to get real low and bump him in the guts, which would have hurt more, or side step. Surely the player has responsibility to look where he is running and brace for impact? If the lion had've turned or braced even partially they would have bounced off each other.

Very difficult to quantify this decision but its ramifications were obvious after the game. It reeks of 'a Filth decision-maker' appointed beyond his depth in 'the AFL role', working towards ensuring  or at least affecting a bad start to the season for Dees' supporters and the Club itself. However, we should also have played our way out of the quagmire in the game against Port. More than one player was down and out on form, readiness and coherent team play. May will make a difference - now the rest of the team needs to adapt to our new driver. Some of our leading players need to be spoken to rather severely, as well, to ingrain the roles and responsibilities of very well-paid professional sportsmen. May will provide, somewhat, a different sense of cohesion and effort, I would suspect.
