How the hell do you know who can & can’t afford it?

I’ve just become a country MCC member & are finding it hard to pay just that.

 l live in East Gippsland on the land & are in the middle of a severe drought, in case you didn’t know. We have to buy feed & water for our cattle.

 I get to about 5 games a year, Its 650klm round trip to get to the game so it ends up quite an expensive day.

Im not whinging but we all can’t afford the Footy club membership aswell

I am MCC and MFC and have been for 18 years since I got my MCC membership. True you don't get much other than an ever-diminishing sized scarf and some stickers and a fridge magnet with the draw on it. Oh and MFC members get 10% of merchandise (maybe to get a bigger warmer scarf). I treat it for what it is a donation to my footy club and admission to the AGM.

I do believe though that of the MCC members we have the highest percentage of any club and for each game, we attend the club used to get a kickback from the MCC as part of the gate takings. Not sure if that is still the case. Our donation also helps boost the membership numbers which is the KPI used by all clubs to attract sponsors, deals and show relevance to the AFL.

Like many others I'm an MCC/MFC member. 

The MFC component is of course a donation. Although I do like the exclusive MCC/MFC scarf! (lol) I wouldn't even consider not renewing my MFC membership. You're either a supporter or you're not**. 

A mate of mine is the greatest tightarse in Melbourne. He's my age (nearly 60) and has been a Carlton "supporter" all his life. He has never been a Carlton FC member. He is VERY well off. (Worth maybe $5 million). Disgraceful ... I repeatedly tell him that. He would have seen his side win at least 6 or 7 premierships in that time. He says he already gets into the MCG on his MCC membership. Talk about miss the point!!!

 

**Having said that, I do acknowledge that some people are not in a financial position to pay for such memberships. And of course they cannot be expected to do so.

When I moved to WA as an 18 year old I dumped my MCC membership and retained my MFC membership, having both as a young person became too expensive. 

If the choice is between one of the two, personally I’d prefer to support the club.

Five sons, five MCC Memberships, cost me a fortune. Had to get em jobs as well to pay for the 'ships. But wait till i get back to Melb....

Your comments are spot on. I also have been a MCC/MFC member since 1993 but my MFC membership clicks over to 60 consecutive years this season. Seen the best and the worst and am really excited by our future.

same same - ( you do get a scarf !) - i get pleasure from the club and it i see it as paying for that pleasure..

You do get something for the memberships: access to buy tickets to away finals. As much of a disaster as the WC prelim was last year, I wouldn’t have been able to go without the dual membership. 

For the life of me I can’t work out the advantage of the “premium” add on though.

Your experience is certainly different to mine. I try to attend every MFC game at the G (home or away) and the “nexus” seems to be stronger than ever. There are certainly many MCC members who support other clubs, but go to (for instance) a Carlton vs Hawthorn game at the G and the MCC members area will not be nearly as crowded as for a Melbourne vs Carlton or Hawthorn game.     And just on the joint membership question, I’m a full MCC member and each year if I’ve been good my wife advances me the money to take out an additional MFC membership.

And further to Mr Gawn’s request, when he finally plays his hundredth game (I think round one?) he will be offered full  MCC membership (not restricted). So, I trust he will take out a combined MCC/MFC membership as well.

Give the mcc mfc members some extra swag - maybe a cap. And a pin they can wear to indicate they are a duel member.

The pin would have the dual effect of playing into rhe elite vibe MCC members like as well as subtlety shaming those without the pin.

And or perhaps one pre or post game event in the member's area per year. Or passes to one of the post game thingies rhe past players put on (eg in the Harrison room)

MCC/MFC members have sometimes been given a slightly different scarf which indicates the joint membership by the addition of the MCC logo. It's very subtle, though (as it should be).

Maybe they could give them a dees thow rug (with both logos) instead of a scarf

This is a very tired old chestnut. 

MFC gets a portion of gate receipts (I believe its around $5) from the gate for any MCC member who attends a home game.  Win, get bigger crowds, increase the bank balance.  Get the MFC/MCC if you can afford it.

I'd say plenty of our coterie and sponsors are MCC members anyway, I think we are doing ok out of it.

It seems the biggest complaint dual members and non dual members have regarding the dual membership is that they get nothing for it. It's clear that the club needs to step up to the plate an offer something more to give people some bang for their buck if they want to entice them. Perhaps it could be a function with players in attendance. Could be paid for by a sponsor if the club wants to keep costs down.

I propose that the MCC add $20* to the annual membership of all members, and that entitles them to affiliate membership of the MFC, this could have a flow on effect of non MFC supporting  MCC members to adopt MFC as their second club. Approx 100000 extra members. If you want to join the MCC you get the benefit of the MFC included.

The $20 could be $50 but it is compulsory. MCC have, baseball, bowls, croquet,golf, hockey, lacrosse, netball, real tennis?, tennis, squash, target shooting and the Melbourne FC.

So the non MFC supporting MCC members are in the MFC anyway. 130000 members hell yes!

 

Full MCC member. 30+year MFC member (2 adults and 3 kids for the last 20). Reserved seat in M51 and Red Seats prior to that. Only sit in MCC members for “away” games.
