A real curse of the first rounders:

2010 - Lucus Cook - injured early but could never put on weight and was to be frank very ordinary

2011 - traded for Mitch Clark, had some good games then had 'issues'

2012 - Toumpas - nothing to say

2013 - Tyson and Salem - Tyson was very good in his first 2 years then faded and traded, Salem had Thyroid issues but has come good but it looked a little iffy for a while.

2014 - Tracca and Brayshaw - 1 ACL and the other with serious concussion issues, has now passed for both and they are establishing good careers.

2015 - Oliver and Weid - Oliver is the only one who hasn't had any issues (touch wood!!!), Weid had known hip issues then has been slow to develop

2016 - no first due to having 2 in 2015 (although our first pick that year Hannan is out with on-going knee issues)

2017 - Trade for Lever - Lever the does his ACL

2018 - Trade for May & KK - limited so far.

So of the 11 first rounders we've had or traded for since 2010, only 1 (Oliver) has got a pass mark from the beginning of their time with us, Salem, Brayshaw and Trac have come good, while Lever and May/KK still have time.

Actually I think we bought the batteries for Salem.

Didn't he have a thyroid problem the first couple of years and missed a lot of footy?

I was wrong on Salem - we did get to play with him and then he went haywire.

I was thinking of those players that have specifically gone down for a year before or at the start of first season with us. Frost was another. And we've already had two more this year in Nietschke and Walker - although the latter is like the present you get from your eccentric aunt and only get around to once you're bored of the other toys.

Pretty common for kids to get injuries adjusting to afl. Danger, Cotchin etc all had slow starts

Great post. Could also go to 2007-2009 as shockers as well. Remember Morton, Watts, Gysberts, Scully and Trengove.  Poor.

Preuss- 1 week

Tim Smith - 1 week

Viney - 2 weeks

May- 3-4 weeks

Hannan 4-5 weeks

Maynard 4-5 weeks

Jkh 4-5 weeks

Lever 4 weeks

Joel Smith 6-8 games

Jetta 10–12 weeks

Kk indefinite

Vandenberg indefinite

Nietschke season

Walker season

14 players out injured. 8 out of my best 22. Unbelievable.  Ridiculous.  It was perhaps forecast given prior years like 2000 where we were built up as premiership contenders.

Footnote. Hawks have 3 players out of their best 22. Birchall, Frawley, Mitchell.  Who’s their fitness coach?

Fair enough question. Who's their Good Luck Coach?

On Game Day this morning, Jakey Lever said he'll be back in two weeks - v Crows

Looking at the footage of his USA rehab, it was very, very testing indeed

Also, May is now running strongly and will join the main group in a week

The win yesterday was great for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being that we won with such significant injuries.  I have reduced the injury list by a week as this was pre-round 7

To have 9 of our top end talent back by round 11 will give the team a huge boost and hopefully help with a huge second half of the season.

I am unconvinced. Sadly as I think he was what improved us out of sight in the last six weeks of 2018.

I'm not convinced he'll be OK,  but I feel certain he will return soon.

Goody said,  or was it mr Misson,  that he will need to be monitored in future,  and most likely his loads managed, looking forward.

That's culturally insensitive. Perhaps he is indigenous and this is literally his Dreaming.

Yesterday’s win was ground out but it highlighted we are down 6-7 key players.  Need injury list reduced over the next few weeks.  Love to see Lever, Hannan, May, Joel Smith all available to line up after the bye round.

Still doubtful we’ll see AVB back.

-At premium members function yesterday the Viney's were guest speakers. Jack referred to Todd as dad, then as the old man and finally started calling him Todd which was funny.

Jack was questioned about whether he saw Stack and admitted he did and was happy to take him on. Post-collision was spent crouched on the ground assessing the damage. Todd stated that both May and Lever are ahead of schedule and he expects them back very soon. Jack is hoping to return next week as is Preuss.

Will be interesting to see who makes way as key players come back from injury, I'm thinking:

 - Kielty for Preuss

 - Oscar Mac for May

 - Lewis for Lever

 - Fritch for J Smith

 - Lochart for Viney

 - Stretch for Hannan

 - ANB for AVB

Kielty might get another run v GC this week with Preuss in the VFL.

Lewis could also stay in to free up Salem into the midfield/wing, but reckon he will make way for Lever unless Fritch makes way.

I certainly hope HE comes back

makes opposition defenders less sure, if we can change that by 20% it will give us much more scoring chances.

isn’t it good to win !!

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
