Classic pre-season interview - it's great to hear, but like pre-season training, means little until things really kick in.

What I do like is that we have a very experienced person in the role who, aside from a tainted finish at the Pies, has runs on the board as doing some excellent work as a CEO.  If he has learned from previous mistakes and helps us set up a much better facility for the club, then it's going to be a great appointment in my book.

I love it.  I know in some respects these are just cheap words, a bit of a throw away line and that the real test is can it be turned into actions that make a lasting positive difference, but I do really like the sentiment and substance behind the statement as well.  Time to rebuild some pride and respect back for the MFC and stop living in the shadow of the 'power clubs' of the AFL.

How Melbourne becomes more like Melbourne can take on many different faces and can be interpreted in many different ways.

If it's the CS historical appreciation approach, then forget it. If it's a unique culture that builds on but reinvigorates our identity, then I'm all for it.

To me I heard it more as the later, that we shouldn't be aiming to mimic any of the other clubs.  There wasn't any Collingwood this and Hawthorn that, this is what those clubs do well and we want to become like that...

History is obviously part of the uniqueness of a club, but I agree it can be overemphasized at times.  On reflection, I actually think PJ started the ball rolling in the right direction on this topic, but Pert has made the right impression on me as well.

Pert was glowing in his comments on Goodwin and Mahoney.  Pert Interview  He sounded very genuine. 

On Goodwin:  “This was a leader of the club, more than just the player group, this is someone who understands the influence that he has in a broader sense"

On Mahoney:  "Josh was there when Roosy (Paul Roos) come on board rolling into Simon, so he’s been the one that culturally has been a constant as our program has been developing. He’s going to play a bigger role down the track.”

Pert flagged Josh would be more involved in commercial activities and oversee the Casey program.  All good to broaden his experience to take the next step in his career: be it to AFL HQ or a Club CEO.  I would daresay in a few years Josh will leave mfc to take that next career step.  It will be an opportunity he has earnt and deserves.  By then I hope we have a flag for him!

I like how he pretty emphatically stated that the moment he got the job he became a 100% Melbourne supporter and didn't really give much attention to any other clubs.

I think the stench of the filth of his Collingwood days has been hanging around Pert for many Melbourne supporters (I count myself in this boat to some small extent).  Something that I try to think of whenever the thought of Pert as a filthy ex Collingwood person enters my mind is that Pert is Roosy's mate from Fitzroy and helps the black and white [censored] go away.

Anyway, Gary Pert is our man now, his heart beating true for the Red and Blue and we need to get behind him and by extension the club as Demons supporters.

While Carlton got its big (and now dwindling) supporter base by winning flags, one of the reasons it grew is because it was the team of choice for Jewish, Greek and Italian migrants in the inner and Northern suburbs. 

While it's image is now related to something more dubious (i.e. Jack Elliott style corporate arrogance), it grew because it was inclusive (and it's rise coincided with televised football).

Melbourne is on track to pass Sydney in population by 2050. We need to take advantage.

It’s interesting the flack this guy cops like he is the next CS. The guy had a huge tenure at the biggest footy club in the country. He’s clearly no nuffy. Collingwood needed a scape goat if they weren’t going to boot Buckley.

It amazes me that there is any negativity at all. Pert was CEO to the biggest Sporting Club in Australia, now he is our CEO

It was a good interview, but I'd say as much as reengaging with lapsed members, we need to be focusing on targeting new members. I presume we have a plan for this too, but he just decided to keep it simple for this interview.

For many, winning IS everything.

First of all I'm not having a go at you here, but have the reports been verified by anyone? 

Further to that does the AFL need to be consulted? Why would internal staff know who is being selected if it is a board decision as far as I'm concerned they have nothing to do with the process unless they're on a selection panel?

There were reports this was less a board decision and more a Bartlett decision? How is that even possible, there would be a selection panel and surely through that process the applicants are assessed by more than just Bartlett. I'm assuming the applicants also needed to be assessed and voted upon by the selection panel and then supported by each board member ? The club has come a long way and I really struggle to see the club letting one man appoint a CEO, perhaps that is the reason Caro was arsed from her speaking duties recently?

Suit yourself. The Filth were on their knees and in massive debt when Pert was bought in. They are now living in thebuilding we should have taken...

We the MFC need to grow into the club we always should have been.

Strange how anyone could have doubts because he came from Collingwood.

Perhaps it suggests that old tribal loyalties still run deep, yet that is juxtaposed against the way supporters quickly embrace players from other clubs.

Any other comments from his time at Pieland are just rumour.  There are often critics when a person leaves an orgnanization, sometimes simply justification from those remaining.  

I think that it is remarkable that he lasted as long as he did at Pieland with Eddie.

SWYL, I seem to recall you have a tv industry background.  Any interaction with Pert when he was MD of channel 9 in Melbourne?

@rpfc, you sound like an old melbournian upset at losing guaranteed board seats whenever you wanted them.  I’m happy those days are gone.  I personally think the board and Bartlett have been excellent.  He was spot on when he labelled MFC soft on and off the field in his first speech 5 years ago. MFC is no longer soft in either.  Everything done by MFC in the last 5 years has been about losing that soft gentlemen club tag, game style, list management, player trades.  I can’t imagine prior boards approving tough decisions like trading Watts.  For me the Pert appointment is just another decision where the soft option would have been an internal appointment.  Only time will tell if Pert delivers which will be almost entirely measured by delivering a facility in the MCG precinct, which he is uniquely qualified to do.
