You can't tell me that for those that love the game and the spectacle we are better off. The seats may be more comfortable and the toilets better, and the food and bar facilities better, but is our experience of the game better?

Everyone says that its progress, that you can never go back, and that we are better off as spectators. 

In financial and materail terms, we are better off, but is the game and the spectacle better off?  

 

I agree with you on a lot of accounts HW but when I miss some action out on the ground or I am to far away to see a fantastic play it is great to be able to watch the instant replay on the Big Screen, just saying ?!!

    1997 Prelim Crows/Dogs was on Fox the other day and the goal umpires were still wearing ties.

    Agree mate.

    Don't get me wrong, I still love footy and going to the game is the ultimate experience. 

    Despite my nostalgia, I don't hanker for the past.

    When the ball is bounced at the beginning of every match I still feel nervous and excited. 

    However, I do find all the distractions a pain, such as the incessant advertising, entertainment, noise and other marketing ploys.

    I also think that due to the saturation of the sport (extended seasons/fixtures/matches played 4 and 5 days in a row, media coverage etc) the sense of freshness and anticipation we have when we go to a game is now a little blunted.  Its like obesity,. There is so much food that people eat more, when less is better. Our health improves and we live longer lives by eating less.

    Also the goalies always seemed like old men.

    Do you remember the footage of the goalie falling over and staggering around before he got to  his feet and singled a goal.

    That was drama.

    Now we get video replays and conferences between field umpire and goalies.

    I agree about the saturation issue. I'm no fan of Thursday night football (unless it's a special occasion, such as the night before Good Friday or ANZAC Eve) as it has the effect of diluting the weekend. I'm also not psychologically ready for it. It's the same with cricket. Why we're playing international cricket in Australia in November makes no sense to me. Clearly the Australian public isn't ready for that, either.

    Any news or should I stop checking cos all I’m reading is anything but a new sponsor.

    I miss looking at the scoreboard and seeing:

    A 1.7

    B 2.5

    Then going through the record to find out who the hell A & B are.

    I select is s dud product .the vic gov site is better if choosing gas and electricity. 

    I went through all of my bills/ deals with Iselect and they couldnt better any if the deals id found myself , why? Because they only have certain companies they want to sign you up with , not a genuine ‘choice’  site 

    But thanks for the sponsorship!!

    I reckon we should go with the CFMEU.

    They sponsored the Canberra Raiders a few years ago so there is precedent.

    Them or the 'Off Ya Tree' franchise. 

    Either way, we could get an entire new generation of supporters.

    Yep, they were the good old days.

    Although back in the first year of Docklands (Colonial Stadium in 2000) they had just one other game in progression and still listed the 2 teams as W and X on the scoreboard one particular Saturday night. I can remember at the time thinking why didn't they just name the 2 sides as we all knew who they were, given there were just the 2 games on that Saturday night.

    You would think with all the positive media attention over the past 3 months that sponsors would b e knocking the door down.

    Perhaps indicative that it is getting tougher to attract large reputable companies to sponsor risky footy clubs, and justify the decision with Board and Shareholders.

    Equally, it could mean we've got more bargaining power and thus negotiations drag out longer. ?

    Would there be much to negotiate?

    Surely, a company would have X $ in its marketing or advertising budget, and that would be that. it just depends whether that is enough for a back of the jumper sponsor.

    I would think if we have a new sponsor then we (and they) would want to wait to get the best bang for buck on the announcement.

    Surely now is not the time.

    I have no doubt we have this well in hand and as others have said we are now a hot property.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.
