If Garlett is finished, Townsend is up for serious consideration.

What is the Garlett situation?

Do we intend to get him back in the Seniors or will he play out his contract at Casey??

Yes Garlett and Townsend, like for like, not.

I don't mind him as depth with his forward pressure.

Great tackler and hard as a Cats head

Disposal is not great

Tall forwards: T Mc, Weid, T Smith
Medium forwards: Melsham, Petracca, Hannan
Small forwards: ANB, Spargo, (Garlett if he isn't retired)

Mids/forward: Vanders, JKH, ? Fritsch

There's not a lot of depth to our forwards. After the 7 who played in last years finals it's either T Smith or Preuss to cover the talls or midfielder types to cover the small and medium options assuming Jeffy is cactus. Obviously the draft is the number 1 priority here to find some long term quality but there's room for a ready made depth option.

I'd be searching the delistings and state leagues looking for a crumber, but if there's not one out there I can see why you take Townsend because he's a reliable defensive pressure player who can do a job whilst the other forwards kick the goals.

Might see J.Smith and/or Hunt in with the forwards next year.  Can't wait for serious training to begin so we can see which groups players are in.

Bugg was better and more versatile and he was not good enough and is gone.

I disagree in the sense of I only see Townsend as a pressure forward and he has Bugg covered there.

Bugg is more versatile though I agree with you there

They do the same job, in theory.

Any connection with him to the great John Townsend Demon rover?

Sorry 56, no idea.

Bugg was and is a shocking kick and a terrible decision maker.

Agree with that totally Townsend atleast can be somewhat damaging

The main difference between Townsend and Bugg ?  One is as hard as a cat's head and the other as soft as butter.

Townsend will have low disposal numbers due to the way he was played, which was as an undersized second marking tall who played with pressure and made the most of low scoring opportunities.  He's also a very accurate shot at (not on) goal.

Do we need him ?  Doubtful.  I'd have him as depth, but he won't want that.  He wants AFL game time.

Since we're looking for some outside run and something different to what we've got, would Jordan Murdoch be worth a spot or does everyone think he's a little soft between the legs for what we need.

Only if we can call him Simon . He could do Wonders.

I’m surprised that people are placing him in the same category as Tom Bugg. In 2017, Townsend played a not insignificant role in the Tigers’ finals campaign and is an AFL premiership player. He also won  the J. J. Liston Trophy for fairest and best in the VFL (don’t think Buggy would quite rate as well on the score of “fairest” that year especially if you asked Callum Mills).

Yes, he did fall out of favour a little in 2018 but it was an injury that kept him out of their finals campaign. He would be handy to have at the club and even if depth, an upgrade on Bugg.

I’m also surprised that he fell out of favour at Richmond after his finals campaign in 2017. Anyone with a closer knowledge of the Tigers have any views?

Higgins came in to the team and gave them another skilled pressure player. Conca came in as a defensive midfielder. Martin played more forward as the 3rd marking option. Townsend might’ve lost a bit of confidence with his marking and skills and the Tigers thought they had enough pressure from the guys they had.

Townsend beat Lever in the grand final - kicked 2 goals from a soft free kick and getting away with a hold. Lever beat him easily on Anzac Eve and about all he did was nail Jones with a legal but cheap shot tackle.

He’s right in that zone where he’s a great role player in a team playing well when he’s confident. He’s a liability if he’s not doing his role.

Pressure is great but . . .erase just three games from his career record, and Townsend has kicked a grand total of 17 goals in 44 games across seven seasons of football. And he laid less tackles this year than Garlett from just one less game.

Was that with a winkz ?

We've got a large number of spots to fill on our list and Townsend would be a much better option than pick 107 or whatever it will be. Being that we've lost a bit of depth this off-season, he'd give us immediate quality depth and would be well worth signing up IMO. We'll get injuries, and he would help drive competition for spots and a competitive attitude at the club.
