If he grows to love the club that’s great, but Bartlett was exactly what we needed at the time (a breath of fresh air), someone who wasn’t part of the old boys club, who could make tough decisions without the weight of the history of the footy club on his shoulders. PJ was this also.

CEO runs the business (would still prefer for it to be Pj but he has announced his retirement), Goody in charge of the players and Mahoney in charge of the FD. President needs to take a backseat and oversee everything in the background.

We’d all love PJ to continue on, but he has made it clear that will not be the case. Who else would we want as CEO? Pert is as good as any imo, regardless of how he was appointed.

WE would all love PJ to still be CEO.  Let’s not forget he was appointed by the afl for 6 months in Apr 2013 to review the club and find a new CEO!  Bartlett was appointed in Jul or Aug 2013 and if he did nothing else but convince PJ to stay then imo he has done a great job, as without PJ staying Roos probably wouldn’t have come and who knows where this club will be.  We got over 5 years from PJ.

Maybe someone can extend an invitation for Caro to be in a podcast on demonland, that's where the real action happens at the club!

Actually, I think Caro on a Demonland podcast would be a great idea. Seriously. There is insufficient longform journalism these days. A Demonland podcast would give her the opportunity to provide a serious assessment of the Demons.

But she is opinionated and a podcast would give her the opportunity to explain why she holds the opinions that she does. While I don't always agree with her (and I find her inability to ever admit she's wrong to be both irritating and entertaining at the same time), she has formed her views from 50 or so years of very close association with football people, particularly those that could be described as "back-of-house".

If, as it seems quite possible;

  1. Sam Stynes is coming and Caro said she is embarrassed by Jim's statue
  2. It is Pert's first big social occasion and she burnt him recently
  3. Senior officials have lingering grievances

Then It is quite reasonable and correct to mark a line in the sand.

I find Caro rapidly becoming shrill, irrelevant and reactive this year. Ive been supportive of her in the past.

If we change and invite her, the very next time she takes aim at us, she would happily say, "I've got a good relationship with the Melbourne Football Club. They invited me to their GF lunch".

Where is the evidence that Bartlett is an excellent president, @Lucifer's Hero?

I have heard from multiple people that the Pert decision was a captains call and that he didn’t talk to anyone at Coll and without the AFL on board...

That is damning whether or not Pert works out.

I hope for the best but I have zero trust in him. I have more trust in Jackson and the AFL coz they have runs on the board. Bartlett has simply been around during our renaissance.

This specific issue sounds petty and self defeating but I have larger concerns.

No offence but you have no idea on corporate governance, especially given we don't know any background. This post above reads liek  "...what have the Romans ever done for us..." BOUGHT PEACE!

In regard to Bartlett he was managing partner of arguably( in my experience) the country's heaviest hitting legal firm and appears when interviewed by BT to be just a bloke in the change rooms. There will be no way he is like that in the  Board room

The club has RESPECT for the first time in nearly 2 decades under his watch. The club was a basket case at his takeover. he convinced PJ to stay when he was wanting to retire and was begged to come to the club. EVIDENCE at a macro level.

The club would not be in this position unless the CEO/Chairman were a tight and effective unit. Only Chairman to have played at the senior level - not that matters anyway but clearly understand club culture from the ground up.

For what its worth, Caro's performance with Eddie on footy classified this week was appalling and cross between self justification and sucking up to the Pies. Ed said at one stage should he leave and just let Caro talk as he couldn't get a word in.

You can capitalise words but it won’t make it reality.

I hope for the best and have not been informed that that is the case.

I have my eyes wide open after the last ten years, and if this admin and this president wants my trust - they have to earn it.

The AFL got us Jackson and Roos and that intervention has come to an end and now we drive our own destiny from here - benefit of the doubt we should not give.

There is an old saying - 'A man's ambition must be small to inscribe his name on a toilet wall'.

This seems to apply to any journalist whose ambition is to write about the AFL male or female.

I love the idea of her on the pod cast, to both hear her POV because frankly i think she's mean and nasty, and a long form iv might be a chance for her to explain herself and not be so defensive. And secondly I think our interviewers would know exactly what questions to ask and grill her properly. If not i would certainly volunteer some questions.

I was told yesterday that this is a bit of a beat up and actually the decision not to attend was more of a joint one. Caro knew a few people were upset and it could be uncomfortable and mutually agreed not to attend. She wasn’t banned and will probably be back next year.

In the op's audio, Caro says she and Bartlett chatted about the function last week and all was good.  The article I quoted was published over the weekend in The AGe.  Yesterday she gets a call from our marketing department to say not to attend.  That sounds like a knee-jerk reaction and churlish, especially after a near 20 year history.

We can't go banning journo's when they write something we don't like.  Not good for business.

This is a new era for our club, and how do you know the marketing department called her - no they didn't - she did not get banned - her paid engagement was cancelled. So - this is how it actually is - She writes a [censored] article on our club's biggest day that is on the PF against West- Coast designed to cause distress and you think it is ok to have her at paid gig where our sponsors will be there as our guest - get real - its called having balls and a backbone. Unless you are very simple person who believes what you read. Its called making a story where there is non!!!

Not good enough if true. A President of a footy club should be above this. Feel free to fine in private, but you don't go around banning journalists just because they don't agree with your appointment processes.

Good Lord George indeed - seriously - that't not what is in play here. This is a new era for our club, and how do you know what is at play here. Simply  her paid engagement was cancelled. Well said, LH. Complete shocker from a media management point of view.

For an article which barely rated a mention over the weekend, it is now front and centre in a spat with, like it or not, one of the preeminent media and issues commentators in our game.

Looks like Caro is going to take aim at an individual more than the club itself, likely Bartlett.

But regardless, you've got to wonder who made this call and what they were thinking!

Dear Rolling [censored]

It's called having some values and having a backbone,

Wowsa. Did you read the article? It was primarily positive, so don't know why you think it was "designed to cause distress".

It looks like you've gone and quoted everyone you dont agree with and copy and pasted your retort. You talk about growing a backbone; feel free to play the ball and not the man.

I actually enjoyed the article as it had some new insights about our past. The timing however, given Caro would have been sitting on those facts for some time, was very disappointing and showed signs of malice.

So I am supportive of the clubs decision. In its simplest form, if you had a mate that was invited to your party and just before the party they openly bagged everyone attending that party, would you still want them to go? Clearly not. Doesn't mean the relationship is completely broken but clearly there attendance would spoil what would otherwise be a great event shared by those that have put in so much hard work at the club

No real need to ban her. It just seems petty and over the top.

However, she really needs to let go of the fiasco of 5 years ago.

We get it. We were an embarrassment and, as PJ bluntly put it, an impediment on the competition.

Writing those stories make for good soap operas but you are just unnecessarily needling people for no real further enlightenment on the matters at hand.

The appointment process around Pert DOES need to be questioned. I myself have concerns about the appointment. However, do we really need to be reminded of it on a bimonthly basis? Especially when we are about to enter a prelim for the first time in 18 years?

I didn't realise it was a paid engagement. Where was that confirmed? I agree we have the right to cancel a paid engagement, but I still don't think we should have. If it was not a paid engagement, though, we shouldn't be selective about which media representatives are allowed to attend and which are not.
