We’ve gotten around him and made him feel at home since the day he arrived. Thru the death of his dad, thru his cancer battle. We are not the issue. He clearly wants to go home.

Next year he’s out of contract. Maybe WCE join the race and up his price. He will leave one way or another. Unless something drastically changes in his attitude or his personal life.

Seems to me like the pull has always been from Freo, now that nexus is surely broken, maybe there's a new path.

I'm still not convinced it's over, but if it is so be it.

I'm left with the feeling that Hogan really is a strange unit.  He came to the Dees at our lowest ebb.  He sat in the stands and saw 2013.  He's seen us evolve and grow into a prelim team and just when we're on the precipice of long-term success he wants to go to a bottom 6 team during his prime years.

Not only is Hogan a strange cat I wonder if he's as thick as a brick.  I wonder what drives him.  Maybe he's not the competitive beast I'd hoped for.  Clearly, he doesn't crave a flag.

If 5 and 23 is on the table between now and Wednesday I'd personally do the deal.  Unlike some others I think May would structurally make us complete and almost the flag favourite in 2019.

I've been a massive Hogan fan, but he seems NQR to me.

Would you counter with just pick 5 for hogan for the sake of just getting May in, or wait and hope freo fold?

i believe it is some kind of ploy from freo who believe we want May desperately and will accept unders to make it happen

He may be aloof, he may not be what an FD department want in the sense of ruthless commitment to the cause - and that's cool, cause that's what works for him... he may have even had some existential awakenings due to the death of his Dad...You can be athletically gifted, doesn't mean you like the grind of the season(s)... see Kyrgios/Tomic as other examples of supreme talent that maybe can't be bothered with the process...in the end there are reasons why he wants to explore the opportunities elsewhere, and why the FD are happy for him to do so.

I guarantee you he’d be firmly on the side of angry. Freo have been chasing him for years and the moment they actually get him they offer an insulting deal and then pull out of the race the moment the dees don’t bend over and take it.

I don’t think you should read that much into it.  It’s like anyone being headhunted for a job where they are offered a lot more than they currently get.  Anyone would look at it seriously just like Jesse has done.  I personally think Jesse would have been a bit torn by the decision.  Shot at premierships with us or big $ and go home factor.  Hopefully he’ll have a big point to prove to everyone next year.

I reckon the On The Couch producers will be making calls to make that happen ASAP.

I wouldn't. I'm strongly in favour of dealing fairly and not making ambit claims.  Players respect that and it makes us an attractive destination who can get the job done.  I think it's good that Mahoney has made it clear all along that to get May depended on the Hogan trade.  We save face with May too.

I'm not a a take it or leave trade hardman but Freo have behaved very unprofessionally and we should not co-operate with them and re-inforce this type of behaviour.  Otherwise it will set a precedent we don't want.  They have created their own disaster.

There appears to be a reasonable price from us in the public domain and that's 5 & 23.  Freo could come back cap in hand at that price and a deal could still be done if Jesse would still entertain going there.

I can fully understand that - particularly as a KPD. But where else? Casey might do well with him for a coupla years?

Not at all the club wants the best deal possible as they fear Hogan won't stay at the end of his current contract and May in their eyes is the best player available to fit our needs. I believe if Jesse was willing to commit long term that would be the priority ahead of getting May.

that last line first...and again  MFC shops Hogan...looks to trade in May

in reality it's ALL there.

but note.

Is Melb niggled because it gets to KEEP Hogan ?  Not apparently...it's annoyed because it's trade deal was not met

just think about that for a moment.  We wanted May...happy to to trade Hogan...again...thats it in a bucket.

Hogan is a very talented player...with faults.  Gong fwd this is not apparently what  want...May IS .

Why is this blatant message so disregarded ?

West Coast?

I hope you are correct. But we still have a surplus of key forwards and a lack of key back man. Sadly Hogan won’t be the one who will resolve this situation for us.

If he signs a long term deal over the summer then I'll be happy.

However, if we can only hold on to him for another year and he bolts for West Coast, and we have missed out on May, then I'll be slightly disappointed.

I'd love this to fire up Jesse for a big season in 2019. I think our club has handled this very professionally and I reckon Jesse will see that too.

I like driven winners.

The fact that Hogan wants to go to a bottom club and leave his mates and a chance of real success makes me question his character and competitiveness.

You disagree.  Marvelous.

I'm pleasantly surprised that all of the criticism for this shambles is falling on Freo and Bell.

The fact remains MFC have publicly shopped an A grade contracted player only for him to be rejected by his long time suitor - in and of it's own this would have been the worst potential outcome when first considering this move.

Agree with most of that. From any time he's been interviewed he's clearly not stupid. In fact I'm guessing one of his problems is he's a bit too smart for his own good. Seems a player for which footy is a job more than a huge passion.

I just wish we rested him when his form was slipping in the latter half of the year. Might've prevented an injury or got on top of one early. If anything it would've been a mental reset. Apart from beating up a few bad sides he was all out of sorts and that can mess with relationships at the club and confidence. Who knows? Pure hypotheticals but maybe Freo offered him a truckload of cash mid year and he's spent the last 11 weeks worried he's about to leave.

Seriously, Jesse doesn't deserve this crap.

Freo made an in principle agreement with his manager (which is how the process should work).  There is no way his manager would have let him tour Freo or do a medical if the deal couldn't get done.  Now they serve him this rubbish.

As if the kid hasn't had enough kicks from life.  Get his hopes up and then pull the rug out.  Just despicable of Freo to the club, Jesse's manager and most of all to Jesse.  I really feel for Jesse.  This is not of his making.

I haven't put thought into it.

Unlike some, I don't get too hung up on draft picks and who won a trade and who didn't.

Hawthorn haven't had a top 10 draft pick for about 13 years.  We have our ducks aligned and for me May completes the team.  Others don't agree.  Great.

If this year is done and Jessie doesn’t sign an extension (ie likely to leave next year), we play him back to fill the role we’d have got May to play.

Would only add to his value, more defensive skills and application, plus enables us to play our long term forward structure...

It's very possible West Coast may be an option, that cannot be denied.  They don't seem to have ever been in the frame before but Kennedy is aging now.  But I don't think it's a fait accompli that Hogan won't be with us beyond next year as you stated earlier.  Lokk it seems we've got some common ground now.

I genuinely think Hogan could play key back very effectively.  He has great ball reading capability and is a nice field kick.  His aerobic capability would suit the up and back between press and zone.  Whether he's be up for this role change is another question though i agree.  And it may push him over the edge to leave at then end of next year.

We've made a plan for him not to be in our forward line next year and we've telegraphed a plan that we need to bolster our backline. Occam's Razor says Hogan back.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”).
