mahoney can't screw us again at the trade table. He seems far too nice. Why did we cough up 2 first rounders for Lever when he was out of contract and we had all of the power? No-one can pre-empt an injury but we are so far behind on that trade so far. You need to be stronger this time around Josh!!

At least he can use that as a starting point, I'd say most people rate Hogan higher value than Lever so at least he can say "we coughed up for Lever, it's your turn Freo."

But it will be interesting to see how they play this, it might depend on how desperate we are to get May. I'm totally of the opinion that we set the price and they either come to the party on it (or at least get damn close) or we hold onto him for another year.

I do wonder if hogan would be more keen to stay if he had been part of the finals series and felt the same fire to go one better next year that the 22 no doubt feel

He was 3rd in the count until his injury. That rates him only behind Oliver and Gawn and they are both top 10 players in the comp. Outside of Hogan there aren't too many 50 goal a year forwards in the AFL. What would we have to pay to trade for one? I'm tipping every other club would be asking for the equivalent to the Treloar trade for someone of Jesse's proven ability and age.

47 goals in 20 games for a high fwd is a better indication

Not saying Hogan didn’t have a good year and isn’t a good player but it needs mentioning again that he consistently did not play well in games against quality opposition in 2018. 9 goals in his 8 games against the top 10 clubs on the ladder. It’s not “fall over yourself spectacular” is it?

Hogan is a good footballer and a great prospect but he should not be mentioned in the same breath as the Chris Judd trade to Carlton, as Olisik did. That is my point.

If we can land picks 5 & 10 for him you take it, pat yourself on the back and move on with life. That’s the best we’re going to do here.

Freo will knock back an ask of Picks 4 & 5 and go to the draft if we refuse to budge. You can drive a hard bargain but be realistic. They could take BOTH of the King Bros or a King brother and an elite midfielder with those picks. Something is going to have to come back their way at the table.

If the 'deal' for Hogan improves the team for 2019 make it. Otherwise keep him.

2 draft picks will most likely take 3 years or so to reach their potential - if they ever do!

Draft picks only of use if traded for high quality players.

Our 'time' is 2019 & 2020. We need quality players now.

He'd carry a lot less guilt leaving knowing that they can win finals without him I reckon.

Only speculation. I'd say the issue is he doesn't like Metropolis's. like me.

Melbourne has gone past it's very-good use by date... it is too big and stressful, these days.

Someone said, Mrs Hogan is living in Adelaide these days?

So why Perth !!!  I'm not so sure that is accurate.

I have a feeling Adelaide may come into this. He is a crows supporter from what I hear and mum is there. Could we get back what we sold. It happens.

In all seriousness, I am beginning to hope we keep JH. We are all panicking over the prelim but we lost it in the middle. No back line would have held up.

JH just needs to sign on for a further 2 years and put all this to rest.

Kk a must. North’s ruck a must.

Back in lever frost and get omac in the gym.

Consider this option then. Freo I expect will not give up pick 5 & 6 (after GC compensation for Lynch) and I hope MFC say no deal, go away. Rightly so, no compromise and no deal and Jessie can be part of finals glory.

Hogans manager cleverly requests a 1 year extension till 2020 which takes Jessie into restricted free agency and then he can accept the mega deal which MFC wont match and take compensation. Hogan will have done his 8 years of service is still only 25 and gets the contract of a lifetime. I don't think at this stage we will have a million dollar a year player yet, as we try to keep our list together and share the money .  If we need another backman play Hogan at CHB where he made all Australian in the under 18's.

GC will not let May go cheap and he is a free agent next year anyway and will be hunting dollars. We get Kolajazz for a third rounder

He finished 6th on votes per game (not including Viney who only played 10).

It is also worth noting that it appears the coaches have given higher average votes towards the end part of the season (presumably the two finals and the WC and GWS games) compared to the early rounds. Ie many of the top 10 finishers had higher vpg for the last 10 rounds compared to the first 8 rounds. So had he played those last games he may have polled higher.

He was on track for 3rd up until round 15ish.

Interesting left-field scenario OlderDemon.

I reckon there is still a 25% chance he stays. Not cut and dried at all yet that Dees and The Purple Haze will reach an agreement satisfactory to both parties. I still think it’ll happen but the alternative course you chart has some merit.

A year extension until 2020 gives Hogan two cracks at playing in a premiership with the club he started with and who he has been through the hard times with. Then off home for the monster contract. Might have appeal to him ... and us.

Job security the major sticking point in that scenario. Go down with a buckled knee, huge disaster for him.

I don't know why Freo would refuse to give up pick 4 and 5 on Hogan he is a gun. They were going to pay a lot for McCarthy didn't who is a better player? As for May why would Gold Coast want a player that doesn't want to be there? They don't want another Ablett situation.

Don't worry we've got this. Hogan for May and Max King.

Freo have been that fucken desperate to get Hogan, they’ve literally been stalking him outside his bedroom window since he left Perth. Also they’re a joke and a basket case and their shitty on field performances are starting to cost them dearly. Lyon is definitely on thin ice.

No way in hell they miss out on their golden boy. They will give us either 2 top 10 picks or a top 10 pick and a player, whichever we prefer or whichever is easier to get.

I will laugh so so hard if Hogan stays, then next year asks to be traded, Freo try to low ball us, we tell them to pizz off, he goes to the draft and ends up at Carlton or GC. Oh the lols.

In addition to Lever we got back pick 35 (Harrison Petty) and our fourth round this year is upgraded to a third rounder, that significantly increases the chances of picking up an AFL grade player, or could be on traded this year.

We got a bona-fide, known quantity star key defender, and a developing key defender out of those draft picks. It really surprises me that when people are asked which is worth more out of a $1m house or a Tattslotto ticket, people would choose the Tatts.

Correct and well said but you shouldn't need to do it.  I have already posted this in the thread and it's far from the first time.

It is hard to understand why @Dr.D continues to post wrong information about historical trades and then makes incorrect assumptions based on these errors.  The real information is easy to find on the internet.

Mahoney and ream have done a tremendous list management job recently, not least creatively trading up for Oliver and Weed.

We had @goodwindees telling us we should be "harder" and more like Essendon.  When I challenged him to provide a list of Dodoro's trading coups all I got was crickets.

There's an agenda of unjustified outrage among some posters who use misinformation and ignorance as fuel.

would love to get Langdon from Collingwood,

Onfield, the Moore protege at Collingwood is looking just a tad like his dad, Peter. Before he becomes too valuable for the Filth to part with, maybe we might be looking in his direction? He's going to be bigger and has that genetic running, flying, kicking attribute that can only further develop.

You keep saying Hogan must be less value than Judd. Or that there’s some overestimation of his ability on here.

Firstly you can’t list a bunch of accolades as evidence Judd was more valuable. If so, what then would you have paid for Lewis??

Hogan is a young gun (not overrated, the stats back that up)

& JM has said he’d be asking for one of the highest trade value seen yet.

I guess you’re excited by the King brothers, I’d prefer Jesse personally. Would you take Kelly or Salem/Tyson?

I appreciate posters being emphatic about their opinions, but 4&5 isn’t unrealistic, it’s just a hard bargain.

As soon as Hogan says he's decided he wants to go home to Freo we'll be in the same position as you describe here for May and GCS

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
