Absolutely fire trucking powerful.

I'm not a believer in motivational talks....but by jeez, this is compulsory ...and I hope the players have had a listen also.

Martin Flanagan is a king of the Odes. Great work, very powerful stuff!!

Almost had me in tears at the end. frikn top class , outstanding, must listen for all dees.

it's okay.

that's powerful stuff  !!

Was in the car listening. Had to wait a few moments to gather myself before hopping out. Absolutely mesmerising but what else would you expect from the great Martin Flanagan.

Just wonderful!  Flanagan has been my favourite sports journalist since many years ago he wrote a superb piece in  The Age about Robert Flower. There is no one else in sports journalism who uses language as beautifully as he does.     And his brother Richard’s rather good as well?.

It's a reminder of what a great history and culture we have.

And culture is built on success and adversity.

And what great characters and footballers have been part of the fabric.

Flanagan's piece is a reminder of times past, but also our great culture.

Reason to be very proud and not ashamed.

I think everyone has their own MFC.  His isn't mine.

Same. I respect Martin and he has a wonderful way with words, but his words about Melbourne have never resonated with me.

I know it was heartfelt but I'm not in a soppy mood about the MFC for once.

I want blood. Not tears.

Martin Flanagan reinfoces his standing as possibly our greatest football jounalist, purely because he loves the culture of the game.

A terrific Ode.

Cried all the way through it. ❤❤❤

We've been through a shitload. Come on demons. Make us proud this weekend.

That's just plain beautiful!  I have moist eyes, for the umpteenth time in the past month.

I have goose bumps and tears dripping down my face. Beautiful stuff.

Thinkin' about you humble Melbourne supporter, who's watched and copped alot of crap during their lives .......

Not to crap on Martin (as he means well) but the fact the nostalgia binge and obsessing over the past ended one week into the Geelong game was a good reason why I have enjoyed this finals series from the Hawthorn game onwards.

I went onto the Carlton Instagram page earlier today and one comment from their fans summed up this kind of stuff for me. They put up a photo of Harry Madden getting a rub down during the 95 finals and the poster remarked that it was a good sign of how badly they were going that they had to fall back into nostalgia to generate content.

We should focus on the players this week, not the peripheral stuff.

Yep, been looking back to the 50's and 60s as long as I can remember.
Lets get this done now.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
