Because MFC listed players play there?

Yes, I get that. They even wear an MFC like jumper. That’s why I watched it too - I support the MFC and it’s players. Just saying it didn’t cut much, because I feel no connection with that club. I know others will feel differently, especially folks like drunkn who have a personal connection and others that go along and watch a lot, but for me it’s for interest only.

Pedersen - looks like an old man hobbling around, he gives his all, but is limited to say the least

Vince - sad way to go out, missing two shots his younger self would have nailed, he’s called time at the right time

JKH - I query whether his fitness level is at afl standard as he starts the game well then fades badly

Hunt - geez, what’s happened to this bloke? Used to eat up the ground, now he looks like he is waiting to be swallowed by it

Fritsch - the obvious reason he’s favoured for a defensive role is cos he’s a composed left footer with the ball in hand and reads it superbly in flight

Bugg - he’s competitive and a fighter, but his lack of skill makes him a prototypical not-quite-senior-standard player

Petty - he reads the ball beautifully and you can see that’s his main attribute and he has he capacity to go on to be afl-level player

McKenna - looked a mile off it

Kielty - I thought he was okay without being anything amazing, and got beaten on a lead a few too many times for my liking

Tim Smith - looks like a classic bit-part player who will do a few nice things, stuff up a few, and ‘play his role’ - he has a nice leap but that’s his main trick

So the Cheats won the Cup

Well done SANFL....

Casey got killed in the ruck: probably the main reason they lost. The Box Hill Gent was very impressive with his 'feedouts' to running Box Hill players. Not having anyone taller than Pedersen made things rather difficult. Tim Smith is not a ruckman.

They did, they sure did, I watched the last quarter of both games due to work commitments.

What is the deal with Jeffy? Has he still got 1 year left on a deal? any takers?

Hunt wasn't terrible, I thought he made a number of good defensive plays and after a few bad kicks wasn't that bad with it. Had a number of repeat efforts to move the ball forward. The greater frustration must be that he isn't a cut above VFL, but with the season he's had that's not a surprise.

I guess the greatest shame watching was there was no player who really was a cut above. Fritsch looked very good, but still had some poor defensive efforts. JKH started in amazing touch then faded.

Petty looked a class above for a half then got turned around. Keilty was good all game but then would drop a chest mark or miss a handball. He can do a bit of everything but isn't really dominant in one area.

I'm not sure what happened to Tim Smith. He went from covering the ground really well at Casey and being clean with the ball to fumbling. And his set shots went way off. No preseason so maybe he'd bounce back if given the chance.

I remember the GF two years ago Oliver looked amazing and the rest didn't impress. This year was kind of similar that there just weren't many AFL listed players really on the up out there. Where was the young small forward or outside mid with some talent?

The first shot was bad Bernie. Getting the ball in a worse position from a lovely kick. That's selfish football. Costly.

The second shot was a lovely smart option and a beautiful kick but just went the wrong side of the post

He paid over the shoulder for their 40 th free for the game. Disgusting umpiring just disgusting.

I wonder what the free kick count was , never seen such poor umpiring! Joke

Bit rough on Hunt, he was one of the few trying to make an impact late in the game. Despite a few questionable frees against he was one of the better players.

My thinking is pretty much the same. I’ve always had a passing interest in VFL but I have no affinity for Casey other than our affiliation and only care about how our players perform in this team.

I do understand there are others though that have embraced the Casey footy club as their own and that is great. When MFC aligned with Sandringham I personally embraced that footy club and went to many games and events. They were a great footy club in my opinion. However when this affiliation ended I didn’t jump on board Casey like I did with Sandy. If anything I have more affinity with the Zebras. I respect all the people that support Casey and love the club in isolation.

Couldn’t agree more and it should be no surprise as we saw last week the Essendon ruck Draper totally dominate hit outs and giving their midfield first use. We managed to hang on for a win but it was a glaring weakness. Just how bad was Mitch King or Flipper toward the end of the season? I thought at the time we just need a big body to compete and keep them honest, in King, out Hutchy who has struggled to get a kick for some time.

After following Casey more so than Melbourne this year, today hurt more than yesterday for me. But reflecting on the season, our team gave me more joy than misery this year so I have nothing but respect for them.

Disappointing for the boys who have been playing there all season that they couldn’t get across the line.

Can’t say I feel too much personal connection to Casey myself though. It surprises me that some are behaving as if this is some extension of yesterday.

Agree.  For me it's the feeder side purely to develop our AFL team.  You'd prefer they win, but it's no big deal for me.  Although, you can't help but get annoyed when Melbourne listed players turn it over, etc.

I don’t know about you guys but I thought the umpiring was pretty sh*t

Where I thought the Hawks outplayed us for the last 3 quarters, but  I do wonder about how much the umpires changed the complexion of the game in the 2nd quarter.

What was the final free kick count?

Mark Jacko Jackson may have had a point when he told Mike Sheehan that Hawthorn are the darlings of the AFL.

They always get favourable umpiring and good press but they are filthy manipulators and reap in the misery of pokies.

And you can’t help but be disappointed when you watch these games and realise just how many list cloggers we still have.

Hopefully some have had their papers stamped. I’d rather punt on pick 80 in the draft than keep most of these players.

Great social commentary there. Yes, the misery of pokies. And, yes, Jacko had very many insights into the world. Still does. Can't think of any that make much sense to me. Ah, yes, Hawthorn, the centre of the AFL universe. Yes, I know that Andrew Dem lived in Hawthorn. I served him some Paracombe Shiraz while doing a tasting in a Hawthorn store around the time the Ben Cousins shite hit the fans and he tasted and raised two figures while he spoke. Man, he was stressed but he still knew what a good wine was.

Was always going to hurt them in the end.

Going in with no ruck in the finals campaign was an impressive effort to get to the GF and nearly pull it off.

Certainly need to start again with the big man stocks apart from Max of course.

Looks like the club agree, picking up Bradtke and approaching Pruess...

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
