Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Agreed they could work together, but it's worth noting the very different game style West Coast plays. They're a kicking team that set up beautifully to defend. That said, Collingwood play a similar brand of pressure footy that we do and rely on their mids to get the job done and their small forwards (and Cox) when they get it inside.

Whether we get him or not, priority 1, 2 and 3 for me is getting Max a decent backup. We are so vulnerable if he gets injured and we are increasing the likelihood of this happening by playing him alone all season long. Unworkable long term, which is why we are going after Preuss.

Maybe our interest in Preuss is to help counter the impact of the longer goal square?

The ball from a kick in will reach the fat part of the ground - far to wide to for one ruckman to defend.  I can see Max patrolling one side of the ground and Preuss the other.  This will allow us to keep our forward structures in place without dragging Tom Mc or Weideman up the field to defend the kick ins and get the ball forward.

i do wonder how good preuss actually is? is he novelty factor alone (torps, big tackles, etc) or do we think he actually has potential as a ruck in the afl? one that runs and competes?

I think we can safely say he is better than King and Filipovic who are gone and Bradtke for the next few years.

Preuss likes to hurt people, Max doesn’t, they will complement each other nicely. Max 45 goals next year.

Correct, so does May. Eagles manhandled and bullies us last week. A couple of beasts in the team will definitely help.

Another big factor will be our gun mids getting another preseason and a year older. Clarry, Brayshaw, Harmes, Petracca, even Viney, they all become bigger bodies.

Eagles were almost a year and a half older on average than us, so a year makes a difference, also another older guy in May helps in that 26-29 bracket.

Even Pies midfield of Pendle, SideB, Treloar, Adams that bit older than the Demons.

Adding a few big tough bodies a bit of Outside run and skill, plus another year into our 20-22 yo players, it’s exciting thinking about next year.

Understand we might need another tall but would not use the Collingwood game as an example of that. We won the ruck many more time than we lost this year.

The Preuss interest to me is more around having an extra tall on the list for backup in case Gawn is injured, Hoges goes or rule change leading to more open marking contests. Would love Stephen May also.

Agreed. But where teams do play two rucks, such as the Filth, having that option there would be good.

Dual ruck teams and Gorilla forward teams are our two major weaknesses, imo. Preuss gives us the option to address at least one of those.

May have been mentioned earlier but I have been told we offered Tyson for Preuss and Norf said no fanks.

They obviously think Tyson wouldn't crack a game all year too then - not big fans of Dom clearly

Would be keen to hear from anyone who has seem this guy play against Casey this year

Can he run a game out ?

Can he tap the ball consistently to advantage ?

Can he take contested marks?

Can he kick and hit a target ?

Why couldn't he get a single game for North ?

I know he was a late convert to AFL from Rugby - maybe Maxy can teach him how to get fit enough to make it in the main game assuming he has the skills to match

Another ruckman is essential.

And a ruckman that can more than hold his own against quality opponents.

Have not seen Preuss and I will leave it to better judges than me to determine if he is the answer.

We were very lucky this year that Max got through the season.

Max will get injured, its not if, but when, and what will be the extent of the injury.

Martin would be the ideal candidate but not likely to happen.

They probably said no as they'll need to clear salary cap space to potentially get Gaff in to go with Polec and Aaron Hall.  I'm not saying Tyson is on big bucks, but he would more than likely be on more that was Preuss is.  That won't work for them.  A third/fourth round pick should suffice in this instance.

Correct, they’ll want a pick.

And they think they’re good for inside ball winners - the Roos want pace.

Grundy/Cox killed us on QB

Cox killed Oscar as a forward, that's why we need a full back who can beat him like Barrass did. Not convinced Grundy did anything different than what he always does - cheat in the ruck with terrible technique and copious holding, then follow up excellently at ground level before mostly shanking kicks. Weideman wasn't playing then was he? He looked really good in the ruck to me, I'd put him in against Grundy where he can follow up at ground level, then use Gawn to destroy Cox.

The two rucks can work but what the Eagles really did well was drag Gawn and Grundy way away from the ball and then kick away from them. They can do that because their key defenders and key forwards are so strong in the air they don't need aerial support. We go the other way and want to use Max as a target or defender as much as possible. The remaining Eagles did enough to get allow Lycett and Vardy to drag Grundy away, if the Pies mids were on top Grundy would've been in play.

It also relies on excellent forward pressure from the other forwards and especially the talls. The Eagles get a lot of pressure from Kennedy and Darling. Weideman looks ok in that regard and can improve as he gets fitter and stronger. T Mc has his limitations but always keeps chasing. Will they be good enough to chase and cover for a ruck up forward? I'm not sure.

Max seems keen to get Preuss to the Dees.  Sounds like we would play two ruckmen.

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/max-gawn-keen-for-braydon-preuss-support-20181002-p507bq.html

Mahoney hinted at that in radio interview when he said there were others beside Preuss we are looking at for the role we had in mind (or words to that affect).

Preuss is not only a back up for Gawn . He is 23 stands at 206 cm and is around 110kgs he is huge  Played  predominantly  forward in his junior days.  At one stage he was the main ruck at North in front of Goldstein but was shuffled back when Goldstein came good again. Preuss has played 8 games and kicked 5 goals so he knows how to kick a goal.

I believe that Goody is going to stretch the opposition backline with Preuss or Gawn when resting. there similar to WCE with Lycett, Vardy and co   It can work and it will be interesting to see. He is worth picking up.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
