MELBOURNE has emerged as an unlikely suitor for lightly played Kangaroos ruckman Braydon Preuss.

Preuss played eight games last year and threatened Todd Goldstein's status as North Melbourne's No.1 big man, but failed to play a senior match in 2018 despite dominating at VFL level.

Sorry a bit of an ignorant question, but can someone tell me did North have other backup ruck options?

Strikes me a strange that if we see value in having backup and support for Gawn, that North wouldn't want the same thing for Goldstein.  Really does also go to show how much fads the AFL goes through.  Go back a few years and all those in the know were saying that their is only room for one genuine ruck in the 22 and now after West Coast use Nic Nat and Lycett, everyone is looking for that second ruck option.

Also wounder if North giving up Preuss to us is going to be like us giving up Martin to the Lyons a few years back - we can only hope!

A few smarties had this bloke in their Dream team both 2018 and 2017. I reckon another just what we need to help with versatility and size. Will be rearing to go.......

And now his fantasy price should be even lower for 2019, having not played a game in 2018.

our forward line has the capacity to be pretty tall

HF: Hogan - T Mac - Petracca
F: Preuss - Weideman - Melksham

then ANB, AVB, Hannan, Spargo rotating through as 'smalls'

Nice perspective.

Yup, he's pretty small that AVB!

Great result. Gawn gets what he needs and our options grow.

Boy we are big next year...

We were already a scary team this year.  We bullied Geelong and Hawthorn in the finals.

Adding May and Preuss is just unfair!  We will crush teams.  CRUSH.

Great Result, get rid of Tyson, to cover a massive hole on our list.  With Bradke as the devolping ruck, I still think we will look at Rookie draft another ruck from state league competition.

Disagree. With no more D-League,  you can't have too many specialist rucks on your list. Three rucks with a handful of players who are capable of pinch hitting (T. Mc, Weideman, Keilty etc) is all you need.

We will not be adding May now unless you can find a low first round pick lying around.

We will get May.

Preuss for Tyson. Yes that works. Maybe we can snag a late pick in the 60s to go with it.

Preuss and NMFC pick 68 for Tyson

Close. I thought we’d push for the extras. That being the Kangas 4th rounder to add to the deal.

Surprisingly, majority of the public and north supporters reckon they got the short end of the stick with this deal.

I think this is the guy Norf are a bit excited about as their developing ruck.

Very happy with this trade for "The Prussian", now we can all relax when Maxx hits the turf knowing that we have a "spare". Well done MFC................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seemed pretty fare to me.  I didn't really want to loose a player of Tyson's realitive quality, but understanding the realities of the scenario fromantic a MFC perspective, I think it's a pretty reasonable win win really on the presumption that North have a deficiency of inside mids.

He has been a bit of a whipping boy here for a few seasons now, but I actually rate Tyson as a pretty decent player, it's just that in our current position I'll agree that he's nowhere near as good as Oliver, Brayshaw, Viney and now Harmes.

Would be interested to now if we're carrying any of Dom's fairly sizeable salary or if that was a sticking point - anyone care to shed any light?

ala us still carrying part of JW's salary for two years...

This trade seemed to false start a couple of times and wondering if salary/years was at the heart of it

Right now Tyson is so far ahead of this guy it’s not funny - Preuss needs to really knuckle down and do as much if not more work than Max in the pre season to really justify this trade

I hope he proves me wrong but I’m far from convinced that he will make it - North agree or they wouldn’t let him go I suspect

Being the size of small battleship means nothing if you can’t keep up with an ever increasing pace of the game - in fact it is a major disadvantage to the team

Jury very much still out on this one !

Yes, we have adequate ruck strength, now. We have added fwd and bckwd strength, firepower, mobile megalithic killing power - and above all, attitude. Save the bucks now on May. Get him in next year but keep him very, very sweet. KK must come in and be developed our way. Big pre-season, individual developments should be a feature and then, work on strategies and team play to accommodate what we are now. Combinations look absolutely awesome and the best runners, retained.

Swapping two non-best 22 players.

A jury wasn’t convened for this case...

Based on “likes”, which as we all know is the measure of a person’s worth, the comments on the Norf board getting the most likes are those that say it was a fair swap with Norf handing over the extra pick. There are a few lone voices claiming otherwise but the majority on there seem in favour.

Supporters tend to revert to pom pom waving once a deal gets done. They can’t change it so they may as well go with it.

On paper I don’t think it’s really up for debate which player is worth more on the open market. But Prussian met a pretty vital need so the deal got done.

The problem is one is in the 22-25 range, the other is out near the 30's.

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
