Coniglio is a free agent and would be a big upgrade on Tyson.  I could see him being a good fit for Goodwin's style.

Jack Martin is contracted until the end of next year, but I'd love us to make a play for him.  He'd be a great fit swinging between wing and HF.  Has pace, marks well above his head and can win contested ball when he needs to.

I also wouldn't mind us sounding out Daniel Rich.  He's a good solid player with an exceptional boot and we are desperate for good footskills.

I wouldn't mind having a crack at Rich this year.

... but save our pennies for 2019__  I'd like a red hot crack at Lachie Whitfield...  he is the one we all want.

Forget Gaff.

Spend Spend Spend on Lachie.

I did not realise that in the case of a restricted free agent if the "old" club matches the new clubs offer and thus forces a trade the old club effectively gives up the compensation pick.

Could mean WCE don't match our Gaff offer assuming we make one.

"The Suns have the salary cap space to match any offer for the restricted free agent and could do so in a bid to force a trade. But they might opt not to given, on current ladder position, they will receive pick No.3 in the NAB AFL Draft if they let Lynch walk. "

This is the point King was making on 360 during the week. He can’t understand the difference between ‘restricted’ and ‘ unrestricted’ for the same reasons you mention DJ.

It's the reason why Adelaide didn't accept the compensation for Danger and made a trade with Geelong instead. The Hawks elected to take the compo from Buddy (pick 19) becauce had they matched and Sydney then not traded then they would have been left with his massive salary and their team would have been pulled apart earlier.

If we made an offer for Gaff, then unless WCE know we can be traded with they'll take the compo pick.

i wonder if weitering is worth chasing as a kp defender ? i'm sure with a better structure around him he could recapture his debut year form. is still only 20

Might be worthwhile - we need an extra real defender and he could be blooded to our game and intent.

I think Gaff is an unrestricted free agent, so they don’t have the option to match

I'm not in the camp that says we need an extra KPD but even if I was could you please tell me how we get him and the reasons Carlton would trade him?  The thread title refers to "realistic".

An extremely good question BB. Like you I am waiting for an answer.

I wouldn't mind having a crack at Daniel Menzel. Knows how to kick a goal.

His nickname at Geelong is blister, pops up when the hard works done.

No offence but he’s exactly the type of player we should stay away from. He can find the goals, all too inconsistently though.

The difference is you can't match the offer for an unrestricted FA and force a trade.

In Lynch's case it probably doesn't matter because GC will finish low and their compensation pick after their first rounder - say pick 3 will be at around trade market value.

However in Gaff's case it does matter because WC's compensation pick after is likely to be late teens and well below trade market value so they might take the option to match and force a trade at market value.

If the AFL want to differentiate the RFA and UFA categories further they could remove compensation for UFA.

The attraction to some players is that they come free, other than inflated salary. In the Gaff scenario we don’t have first round picks to trade and the players they would want are the ones we want to keep.

Andrew gaff has to be a priority and to be totally honest I still think we are in the box seat. I think we’d have the cap room to offer a good deal. And we are a promising team for the short and long term who he grew up supporting. I can’t see north offering drastically more than what we could.

Aaron hall is another I think has the attributes we need and wouldn’t cost much to get.

I suspect the curve ball could be Jesse hogan. I’m sure the club will ask if his intention is to stay on and if not we may look to more him on a year early given we have some cover up forward now. Obviously I think and hope he will stay but if he was set on leaving he’d get us a pretty good package in return

Any player is a realistic acquisition given the correct incentives, that need not be purely financial.

I agree, just in the event Jesse told them he wasn’t open to discussing an extension because he wants to go back to Perth. I suspect he will stay and will be signed on before round 5 next year

Jay Clark has repeated the rumour that we are into Aaron Hall. Not sure if he got it from here or not.
