Was it Neeld that overruled Viney to take Toumpas over Wines, or was it Viney who said we should take Toumpas over Wines?

Let's blame Neeld as we will always be grateful to Todd for a moment of passion and gave us JACK.

The best part of this speculation is that these days it is a reasonable proposition, rather than laugh out loud funny, that very good players - Lever, Wines, Gaff, Langdon - would want to come and play for us. We are an attractive proposition with as good as chance of long term success as any other team.

The days of the Tom Gillies and David Rodan’s of this world being our big time recruits are well behind us.

Future thinker: like it, agree with your longer-term synopsis. Wines would be a gun, but at some point our midfield would negate the availability of KPPs at both ends of the ground..

i also agree with your Gaff perspective- with a team currently slicing through the middle,  is it that necessary?

Thats right, and ALL clubs are now trying to out build one another's mid fields, so when will ours get overtaken by most clubs. we are not that far ahead of the masses, and we equal some of the top teams in midfield.

Its where we spend our resources, thats Key.

In 3 years time, our midfield won't be much stronger if at all, with our attrition.  Jones'y will be about dusted off.

We want to continue to be the brutes inside

Our outside types can be brought in;,,, and IF the AFL do open the game up further;,,, then outside types with more space to operate in,,, will be easier to come buy.

They won't be so special.  Just quick and skilled... more like a Garlett, if you like.

Disagree DV8...  in 3 years time our core group of young gun mids (Oliver, Brayshaw, Salem, Viney, Petracca, Fritsch, Hogan, Harmes, Spargo, ANB etc etc) will all be in the 60 -150 bracket.

Our midfield will be much, much better than what it is now once they are more experienced.

Ok, makes sense.

As you say, Toumpas looked like a good pickup to me at the time.  Standing up as an under 18 and playing well in a senior SANFL grand final spoke volumes to me that he was made of the right stuff... just went down hill from there.  I guess it's a pretty big jump playing SANFL to AFL and different playing in the best team in the comp to slogging it our trying to make your way in the game with the wooden spooner.

The other reasonable defense for picking up Toumpas over Wines in my mind would be that we already had three on ball bulls in the bag at that point with Jones, Vince and Viney, so some outside polish to complement that also made sense from a ballance perspective.

I NEVER ever wanted Toumpas, his highlights real left me very very unimpressed

I still maintain we should have picked up Wines and if Neeld went with Toumpas over Wines

Then what does that tell you!??

As I maintained all along Neeld had NO idea!

Why don't you throw in TMc, Stretch, DJohnston, Baker, Filopovic, and the rest.

In reality we have as inside mids >  Jones, Viney, Oliver, Petracca, Harmes this year, and Brayshaw who still carries the Q?...  with cameos from Salem, Hogan.

If you take out Jones, we are left with Viney Oliver, Petracca, & Harmes I would say;,,, as our main Inside Mid group... with possibly Maynard ?

If one of these gets a serious injury, we are seriously thinned out inside.

If the game continues using the interchange as it is now, we could do with another genuine power insider.

Brayshaw, Salem and Hogan, all play well in other positions.

but jones should be fine to play for a minimum two, probably three, more years

Again I'll disagree.  You seem to want to live in hope, that all will be perfect for us.

Brayshaw is a week to week proposition, with his ailment.  There is no guarantee, with his condition.

If he gets knocked out Pre half-time next week, what do you think we'll do ????  In that scenario, he may not play again all year.

Tyson, come off it, everyone is talking of trading him. He is being overtaken rapidly.  Has he worked diligently on his kicking, like tMc has ?

His speed and run is poor.

So I will discount, 2 of your list wwsw.

Edit:  Jones you say, probably 3 more years in our inside Mids???  2019-20-21...

Jonesy will be 33Yrs of age, prior to beginning of 2021 Pre-Season.

Brayshaw doesn’t have a “condition”, He received a couple of concussions in a short period of time, so he wears a helmet for peace of mind.

Any player could be knocked out at any time. Brayshaw isn’t a bigger risk. Nev Jetta went through almost exactly the same thing a few years ago and nobody ever talks about his “condition”.

Carlton and the Bombers are the ones.

I heard he was close to signing 6 weeks ago and now a massive deal has been put in front of him to pry him away.

He has a glass jaw.

He is prone to concussions, more than most.  This is why his rehab was so problematic. And he had to undergo such stringent treatments

Ollie to the Dees! I would like that...

I agree a Vic club has offered him a very good contract. And he will leave Port!

I cannot see him going too Carlscum. Essendon is most likely. But I wouldn’t discount the Dees to pull a swiftly!

The Dees I think are prepared to trade picks and players to get who they want.

Wines, Gaff and Langdon are all gettable.

Our window is open now!

Everyone needs to get this in their head.

We do not have a first round pick this year.

We are not allowed to trade our first round pick from next year.

How do we get Wines or other players who are not free agents and have to be traded for? The answer is we can’t, unless we trade our quality. So unless we are willing to trade Hogan, Oliver or Petracca, then this trade, or trades for other good players such as Langdon, cannot happen.

your forgetting that one really important factor..

I can live without Wines.

But if we keep bringing in better and better mature players every year, like we have been doing with increasing quality: Vince, Melksham, Hibberd, Lever... Gaff?

Then keep finding late gold at the draft...

If we can keep up that momentum, like Hawthorn & Geelong did, we'll keep turning out a powerful list year after year, and be around the pointy end for a long time

Oh geez, I hope your right.  Because he would just set off inside mids, for the next 8+ years.  We would be excellent, right in the engine room, feeding out our skilled players.

I think once we got Wines, the list is near complete.  Don't need much more, just draftees. and a couple of topups.

You won't have to trade a lot for Langdon, poor mans Balic.

No doubt hes a good player but if we get him hes going to frustrate a lot of supporters with his average at best foot skills.

No chance of getting Wines as Lord Trav mentioned we have nothing to give Port.

We have Garlett, Tyson and Hunt who can't get a game and would get some interest I'm not sure what we could get for them though.

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
