Correct me if I'm wrong, but I could've sworn at some point on the weekend a Crows player elected to bump Maxy instead of playing the ball. The result was a head clash which knocked Max down, but could have been much, much worse. No free kick, no mention of the incident from the MRC.

Did I see that incident correctly? I don't have access to a replay unfortunately.

Yes.you are.

Of course the TV ratings are down, look who is playing Friday nights, Carlton, bulldogs, and saints  all have 2 to 5 Friday night games each, the AFL played favorites with the draw and lost big time

I understand the Bulldogs getting some Friday love despite their performance in 2017. The 2016 win gives them some credits in the bank. Crazily I even begrudgingly will concede that I somehow understand the AFL decision re: Carlton on some games (maybe 1 or 2 but definitely not 4) considering their support base (which isn't as large as it use to be). But how St. Kilda got preference over us based on 2017 I do not know.

It will be interesting to see what happens in 2019 re: Friday nights. I'll tip that Carlton gets 0. If we make finals and beyond this year I imagine that they will try to overcompensate and give us 3 or 4.

The way we are playing will excite the AFL also, it's good on the eyes, exciting and would attract an audience, unlike for eg Sydney or StKilda of old.

I'm still very cautious.

Been disappointed many, many times before.

Just taking it one game at a time...

Some recent history over the past 31 years or so.

1987: Too young to remember  with Jimmy Stynes running through the mark and Gary Buckenara kicking the match winning goal after the siren in the preliminary final. Was heart-breaking that Hawthorn won a game that Melbourne should have won!

1988: Too young (fortunately) to remember seeing the Demons get destroyed by the Hawks by a massive 96 points in the Grand Final. The Hawthorn team in the 1988 Grand Final was simply too good.

1994: We had a great side but lost to West Coast in the Preliminary Final. Names like Schwarz, Lyon, Tingay, Jakovich etc...we had a star-studded line up. Injuries got the better of us too.

1998: Had a massive amount of momentum but lost to North Melbourne in the Preliminary Final. I remember Jeff Farmer taking that specky at the start of the game but missing the goal! Really thought we were a massive chance to win the Premiership that year after bouncing back from the Wooden Spoon in 1997. Sadly it wasn't to be!

2000: Had high hopes but Essendon were too strong beating us by 60 points in the Grand Final. Essendon were the best team all year.

2002: Lost that final to Adelaide in a game we should of won. Travis Johnstone had a blinder but our team run out of legs.

2004: Lost that close final to Essendon. The one where Matthew Whelan laid a terrific hip-and-shoulder on James Hird!

2005: Lost that final against Geelong (having Neitz injured was a big blow).

2006: After beating St. Kilda we lost the next week against Fremantle in a final.

So lots of false hope and bitter disappointment in the past.

There is certainly something special about this current team and I am excited...but also very nervous.

Let's see how things pan out...

A drought breaking Premiership would see the MCG awash with tears of joy from long-suffering Demons supporters.

Nevertheless, I dare to dream.

The Bulldogs, and the Tigers have won Premierships. Why not us?

It is up to the Melbourne players themselves. As Paul Roos once said, they need to choose to be great.

Kane Cornes sucks dogs balls.  Only 2 players chosen from a team that beat 4th placed crows by 91 points?  Should have just cut and pasted the team sheet.  After watching some of the other matches, he honestly has no idea.

Whispy Watson, Terry Wallace & Wayne Carey refuse to give us any credit.

Plough said the big winners over the weekend were the Kangaroos & Eagles & completely fresh aired us.

And as for Carey, doesn’t trust us, said it was the worst Adelaide have played for 3 years & still said we haven’t played anyone

Still a long way to go in 2018 & have a lot to prove but these big headed media ex footballers need to get there heads out of their arses & acknowledge 5 in a row & not far from the most quarters won in history

Mentioned this last year whispy,Carey,Wallace,Bartel and crawled back in there shell.

I'm somewhat surprised that we aren't given more credit in view of the absolute crap served up by most other clubs over the last few weeks.  We play an incredible brand of football which is both hard and skilful, not the slog garbage that's been served up by other teams.

Who wants to see 4 or 5 goals kicked between two teams in a half of football, if you do go to the soccer.

No one wants to stick their neck out and call it how it is because they've been burnt before by us, but eventually they will have to, and to be quite honest I couldn't give a rat's about any of the midget brains in the media.

I think it is realist to reserve judgement on us. I am delighted about our form and find it incredibly exciting and am more confident about our successful future than any time in the last 30 years, but it is understandable for many of us to be cautious given our history.

So far this side has outperformed expectations, but I prefer at this stage to “take one game at a time” and enjoy the ride. It is going to be wonderful  to watch it unfold.

You can be cautious, which is why you started the "is Goody the right guy" thread.

In the meantime I'll smoke my pipe in the knowledge that we're on the verge of great things.  It may not be this year, but it's coming.

100% @ProDee- and none of us have experienced a Melbourne team playing like this - in our living memory (at least on this forum) thus its really [censored] hard to be cool with it...and feel like its a false dawn. I'm well and truly prepared to cop some losses in between now and September, but the reason I feel so bullish about this team is the evidence of the body of work (stats for some, how we win for others)  so far... The individuals really relish playing for one another as a team, not a team of superstar individuals that are not cohesive.

If it walks and quacks like a duck, then it is

It is, but you may not have noticed I have since retracted my comments re Goodwin.  There is nothing wrong with questioning decisions, but there is something wrong when you do not admit when you are mistaken.

The last five weeks and in particular the last two have been terrific.

Confidence is growing in the players, Sunday was a joy to watch. Brayshaw, Petracca, ANB, Harmes, Fritsch, OMac, Spargo, Hannan, Smith, Salem(even if Sunday wasn’t his best game) you can see the guys believing.

If Jetta, Hibberd, Lever, Viney, Oliver, Gawn, Hogan, TMac, Melksham, keep up current form they will be pushing for AA selection.

Jones, Lewis, and Bernie showing their experience and they just know what to do!

On Sunday we just looked like a top team, classic ball movement, highly skilled, tough, totally destroyed the Crows who had got to 6-3 win lose record with those players.

I don’t care what anyway thinks or says, I’m just enjoying the ride and hope we keep going!! It feels like we are made of the right stuff.

I left out deliriously happy watching the Demons at the moment. Can’t wait for Saturday!

Yet the media are pumping up Brisbane for a attacking game plan, we are playing a totally different football from the rest of the competition, a all out attack, with a hard edge contested brand.

Exactly, losing tight tussles against fellow top 4 contenders won’t hurt badly if we win against those outside the 8 and below us. We don’t need to beat our fellow contenders until it matters. Richmond and the Bulldogs weren’t perfect against the ladder leaders in their premiership, didn’t matter in the end. I just want us to get to the finals before we talk about winning premierships.

We have the arsenal, now it is time to start thinking of revenge - Geelong, Richmond and the frigging Filth.

That's what I thought I saw, except that the mutual head contact was caused by the Crows player attempting a bump, so I thought it was a clear free. I'd love to see it again.

Yar. Beating 9-18 by lots is 4-6 pt game. Jusssst losing to top 4-6 is -2 pts. Beating top 4 is worth +6. I literally just made that up and it makes no sense so please enjoy

This has been another nonsensical post by tim brought to you by our station sponsors Sapporo

No, Timbo, paradoxically, what you said makes quite good sense. Don't undersell yourself !!

Perhaps the Sapporo/ dees supporter combo is the path to enlightenment.

Or I could be totally wrong.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
