Yes .. he keeps playing until someone better at VFL level forces him out.

His spot is there to be taken ...just like Lewis... up to those playing at Casey to grab it.

Compare Vince with Tyson, this season Vince averages 17.5 disposals and 1 turnover every 5 disposal, Tyson average 22.5 and 1 turnover ever 4.6 disposals

Vince has been  great for us and hoping he plays his 100th game this year.  I like to think that he could play on next season ,it depends on the personal coming through. Having to play Lewis and Bernie another year together or one of them could be fine. However J Mahoney stated recently that they will be be  strongly involved in trades at the end of the season.                                                                                                                                                                           Lewis is contracted till the end of 2019 and Bernie is out of contract at the end of the year. Regardless of the situation, I believe that there is a place for Bernie in a playing capacity.  He is a true Demon.

Am a fan of Bernie. Think he has another year in him. Was obviously injury affected last year. Would like to see him do the tagging role more, hopefully starting this week on cripps

Also think he would work well with Robbo in a media gig at the club in his life after footy (if he stays in Melbourne)

Lewis is contracted for next year so it will 2 old codgers on the list. I think we only have room for one next year.

If he stayed on at a minimal price that's still likely to be closer to $250k, compared to a draftee/rookie who might be $100k all up. So depends if we've got the ability to pay that or if it needs to be spent elsewhere.

He's the most replaceable in our current 22, which probably means he won't go again, in my opinion.

Hunt isn't getting a game at the moment because of form, it's got nothin to do with Bernie.

I think most of us remember the Bernie of 2014-15 who would rack up 42 touches against North or be shaded by Maxy as BOG against Geelong at Kardinia Park. It's human nature to look back and assume because he is no longer playing that role in the team that he is not worth keeping.

With age comes deterioration of skills and as such Bernie now plays across half back with occasional tagging roles. If he has the chops to do that then I say keep him on. He no longer needs to be the bloke who has the ball on a string and kicks goals from 45 out on the run.

That said, many footballers know when they are 'cooked' and the game has basically passed them by. I think @dazzledavey36 once played a game against Daniel Cross once who told him after the game that while he didn't believe it at the time, he had gotten too slow and not powerful enough for the modern game (despite him still collecting average possessions in the low twenties).  That to an extent might be where Bernie is.

If he keeps up this form, takes another pay cut and players like Stretch, JKH, Balic, Maynard and Wagner don't step up then yes you would have to offer him another year. I hope the MFC is mature enough not to fall into the "he's too old trap". I still have nightmares over the James McDonald decision. 

Yep - he still adds a lot of value to the club.

He might be spending a bit more time at Casey than he may like though.

 

100% yes. We have plenty of other dead wood to get rid of. Vince would be invaluable in finals.

you must dislike the war in syria more. i dislike nothing more than would-be supporters treating players like expandable swap cards and offering their cheap speculations on who could be dumped from the list. no wonder players are well-advised to keep away from  such social media  by managers who value player welfare over the baying crowd of internet typists.  ps if you ever met Bernie Vince (or others for the chopping block) would you offer up your 'opinioin piece'' in person? i doubt it. safer at the typewriter.

Depending on whether Bernie wants to do another pre-season, on current form he is in our best 22 or very close to it. 

We all know he has lost a yard or 2 in pace but he brings 2 sided disposal skills to the team lacking them, can still shut down an opposition utility and knows how to kick a goal. 

Even if he were to play in the 2s to make way for a younger player, his availability on the list may be a pretty cheap back up/depth player. 

Subject to what club and player are looking for, l would keep an offer on the table. 

He'd be one of the best backup players in the comp next year in terms of playing a role.

Apart from tagging he is probably out best wet weather player (if thats a thing?).

This year his role is really clear. With his experience he positions himself really well, knows how to use his body really well in all contests and would still be in our top 5 kicks in the team. Yes he has make some kicking errors this year again but he has also been the one willing to take risks kicking into the corridor when our team tightens up in games.

You definitely couldn't say unequivocally no for a return next year. He is way to valuable still. Like most on here I think reassess at the end of the year but his works this year so far would lead you to think he could carve out a similar role next year between AFL/VFL.

You need to start a site with another week known poster with a similar bizarre ideology. 

There you can discuss how every listed player plays every week,  no-one has any deficiencies and no-one every gets delisted.   Sounds awesome.

For the record I don't believe I have seen any posts that disrespect Bernie personally.   I'm sure he's safe to read this thread even if he doesn't agree with it.

I'm glad you brought this up Col, because that's exactly my point. He just looks far too slow for me this year and I just feel we're just carrying him along in our side. I'm also not sure what his role is down back besides wanting to hog all the kick outs every time opposition kicks a behind. 

Going into next year we simply cannot afford to have Vince and Lewis in our back 50. Once the opposition slingshot from half back, these 2 get shown out big time! For me Lewis stays on the basis that he's just an all around better player and provides quality leadership. Not saying Vince doesn't, but to me Lewis is the stand out leader we brought into our club.

Vince is one of those who just wants to be on an AFL list as long as he can. I can see us keeping him another 2-3 years as an AFL/VFL, then purely VFL player for depth, before finally letting him call it when he can't get an AFL game (2020 or so).

that sucks, but last year he played poor. he made dumb decisions. lots of intercepted kicks across goal, etc. of course he's a handy player. he's still very very good on his day. no, we shouldn't lose hunt to keep him absolutely. but they are two different players with different skillsets. unrelated in my opinion.

His disposal is just horrible. Those dinky switch kicks or loopy kicks into the corridor. He's done and has been for a year and a half (if not longer).

As soon as Baker or Smith are ready, they'll be in. That's the only thing keeping Bernie in the team IMO.

I think he’s been good this year (apart from the idiotic kicks at times) and I’m one of his biggest fans. 

But no way do I want him going around again. Love what he’s given us but it’s coming to an end. Someone needs to step up or get someone else in for the role. 

Bernie is in our team of young players because he plays his role, only harder, and five times better than what Daisy does for Carlton.
