Wouldn't have thought I was bragging. But we certainly have more supporters and we apparently clearly could afford to bottom out... however many times we have.

When I was growing up, Carey and his Roos were dominating the competition and either winning flags or going very close. They were the Friday Night Specialists. Yet, they never managed to convert this into memberships or supporter base. If we'd been in the same position during the 1990s and won flags, we'd be in a very different position membership-wise than we are now.

In fact, if we win a flag in the next 2-3 years, I strongly believe we can reach 70,000 members. North could only dream of this.

wow 70,000 is a huge improvement on where we are now.

Only a flag gives us a chance to see those numbers.

Fingers crossed.

50,000-55,000 should be the goal next year. If we can win the flag in 2019 or 2020ish, we should be aiming for at least 10,000 more on the previous year and a few more three game memberships and we'd be a shot at 70,000 IMO.

FWIW Tony Sheahan reported on his twitter feed that the Demons are back in the race for Gaff.  Usually a fairly speculative fellow, but he's put it out there.

And with that we've shown freo our hand. We need the cap space now to get gaff, so will take slight unders for hogan just to get it done to focus on the deal ie we dont want to play hard ball and keep Hogan for 1 year. I wont be suprised if the club considers Gaff and May alone a win. If we get anything above those 2 ie another first round pick, id be very suprised.

Additional Q. What if WCE match? We would have to give something correct? Wont it be the freo trade leftovers after a May pick up?

Yep a flag will be huge.

In the meantime, the 90,000 crowd at each MCG finals shows we probably have 70,000 but about 25,000 of them are MCC members so don't count in our numbers.  That the MCC had about 5,000 empty seats for the Pies/Tigers game shows how strong our support is within the MCC

Those crowds also showed the latent support out there for the dees that as yet haven't joined as members.  They may never do so but they are out there.

Nonetheless, that turnout will prompt broadcasters and future sponsors to stand up and take notice.  It will be huge for our exposure and the chance to capture the hearts of a younger generation and newcomers to aussie rules.

I estimate approximately half the MCC members who ‘follow’ Melbourne actually “support” them by taking out MFC memberships. (They are not respected!) Should we continue on our upward trajectory, the pressure will be there to put their hands in their pockets. I expect an increase next year and the year after.

I want this guy in the red and blue so bad next year.

He will stop at nothing (bar clubbing someone in the face) to experience what he missed out on at the weekend.

I think deep down he knows this wont happen at Norf especially if he himself takes 10% of the entire teams salary cap.

That is cold, stark reality, GCD. It won't happen at Norf and he'll struggle to bond as a teammate with all of the players on the list with excessive salary considerations. He would remain a 'fly-in'.

Yep you are correct. But if you want facts here rather than opinions, then here’s one: Gaff committed an act of undisciplined thuggery. Bugg lost me when he flipped, so too has Gaff.

If Gaff picked us and WCE chose not to match, would the realisation that he's cost us no picks/trades ease the shock of what we pay him? Are we prepared to offer $1.1m for 5+ years knowing he came without sacrificing picks/trades? Or are they completely separate considerations?

What do us supporters think? What would the FD think?

My only real question. Is he really THAT good that he gets 1.1? That might not gel with what others get.

I think Gaff is good...but that good ??  Not sure.

If he plays well through the season filling an outside need and we win the flag, I'd possibly be happy to see him on $1.5m. I see him as complimenting our list very well and making immediate significant impact (not with fists)

Alas, we cannot see the future...

1.1 is a whole bunch in 2018 and probably 2019 but by year 5 of the deal in 2023 it won't be near as big a deal.

Salary growth in the AFL follows the trajectory of the media rights deals which have grown astronomically in the last 15 - 20 years.

The reality is we were in the conversation with Hogan on our books. Let's say for arguments sake we were willing to part with 900k for Gaff. Now we have freed up 850K on our books along with our reported cap space to land 1 or 2 big name players I could see us front loading the [censored] out of a contract to gaff to get him over the line for "free"

It appears media outlets have him going to Norf however we might be a bit late to the punch here.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
