Almost Trumpesque ?

Some folks may recall the Leigh Matthews/Neville Bruns incident back in 85. Leigh Matthews was charged with grievous bodily harm by a police officer who was on duty at the match, and was deregistered by the league for a period of weeks. Now this was back in the “tough old days” before all the regulation and ultra-professionalism that followed over the years. One would imagine the same would apply in the current epoch. Regardless of Bradshaw’s wishes, the message it sends to society by banning someone from work for a few weeks for an outright assault is disturbing. Damn the game. It leaks into the popular culture. And that’s the last thing we need more of as a society. He should be formally charged.

Correct, however that assault law covers many moves in the game of Aussie Rules. Obviously punching a player isn't in those rules, but police will be reluctant to get involved IMO, it opens a can of worms. Eg. Was Cameron's elbow chargeable by police? Wasn't consentual. Hard to know where to draw the line.

I'd rather the AFL dish out harder suspensions for tummy taps,  jumper punches, etc. Despite the howls of the outraged majority, i do believe Gaff wanted to punch Brayshaw's chest and in that split second got it horribly wrong. That's not excusing him, however many body punches get off with a fine and are too accepted by players and the MRP.

Gaff made a massive mistake which cost Brayshaw dearly. He'll pay the price which should only be in supended matches, not police charges.

Good points. 

I suppose I draw the line on "football act". Cameron's elbow was horrible and brutal but he was within the rules to attempt to mark or spoil (and contract associated with those acts is consensual), and despite how clumsy, negligent, reckless etc. he was, I think anyone would be hard pressed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he intended to elbow him like that.

Gaff threw a punch. Off the ball.  Punches are never part of the game (unless an attempted spoil, which this wasn't). A push may be consensual in this case given the players were jostling to make position (and that "may" is enough to ensure charges couldn't be laid for that act) but the punch was deliberate.  He looked at him and swung with a closed first. He may not have deliberately hit him that hard, or deliberately hit him in the head, but the decision to punch was intentional. The punch was against the rules and not part of expected play,  which imo would make it non-consensual.

 

Does that explain my position?

So quietly I intended to imply he may a pest or be acting too big for his boots for a footie freshie.* The golf-buddies connection is a weird aspect. My footy career ended when I punched one of my best mates (after a match) and split my knuckle beyond Medicare repair. It's the first and last time I've ever hit anyone - so I'm not sure if that means it's out of character or not. We got over it though.

The golf round adds a bizarre twist. I just think Gaff had a complete brain snap where he probably didn't even know who he punched at the time, only Gaff would know that though. I don't think he meant to smash his teeth in, I do think it was meant for the chest. Neville Bruns said in the paper today that Gaff should not face criminal charges. I'd love Brayshaw and Gaff at the Dees. Maybe Debra can send her boys home and the Dees will look after them for the next 10 years.

Did I just overhear on the news Paul Roos putting the boot into Gil for being out of touch and something about integrity of the game?

If there's nothing the public loves more than crucifying a villain it's a redemptive story. It's rooted in our Catholic past of confession and resurrection. This story will end with an all round feel-good factor when Gus and Andrew and Gaff pose for photos together at the annual Brayshaw Christmas repeat sprint before round one next year.
