ok, i'll stick my head out and predict this thread will make 100 pages

dc, if we change the name of this thread to "No JW no B$" it's a certainty. Would probably make just as much sense.

we'd have to delete all the current posts though

better to rename the 'no t$ no b$' thread the 'no t$ no b$ no jw' thread if you seek a haven

Any update on Jack this week? What has he been eating for breakfast? Where has he been spotted out and about? Any photo's? Did he train the house down? Hello to anyone who's coming into the thread because Port Adelaide player Jack Watts has had his thread bumped again.

Don't want every intimate detail but I will open this thread as the only likely source of any info. Don't live in Adelaide.

My best mate from high school (a demon fan and supporter) who I’ve know for 20 years, recently bought a pair of JW board shorts - haven’t spoken to him in a month...

If the goal in getting rid of Watts was salary cap space we would’ve fought harder in the negotiations with PA for them to pay more of his salary, possibly even resulting in us taking a lower pick. We didn’t, we are still paying a significant portion of JW’s salary. Salary cap management is complicated, no doubt, and little things can make a difference, but this was not the case here, we had the space for Lever and Watts, we chose to get rid of Watts. You can not believe me if you want to, but anyone from the club will tell you the same, if the only way you guys can reconcile getting rid of Watts is that it helped get Lever then you’re clutching at straws.

Big mistake all around, as it panned out. Watts was conditioned to play for us for a few years to come yet there seemed to be a coaching issue to overcome. If it is too hard, snip it off? He is the best shot at goal in the league and our long-bomb policy going way over Watts' head did not help. When going forward with possession himself or when dropping back into the hotzone, Watts produced. His thought-action processes were elite. If he dodged an incoming tackle or stayed at the periphery of it, he could see an alternative which in team-play, could ameliorate the problem, moving the team forward. This was a feature of his game. He never lost a game from his actions. He did win a few, though.

Not all from 2008 but I still laugh (well maybe laugh isn't the right word) that Port have our 1, 2 and 4 pick....

We cannot forget that fact.

I can. They didn’t cut it.

We will be a much better team now

no more one armed tackles

As what "panned out"? All your comments about JW are about his onfield performance yet there's adequate evidence circulating, although perhaps not formally confirmed, that the club chose to move JW on because of his off-field commitment (such as to injury rehab). Furthermore, nothing onfield has actually "panned out" given he hasn't played a game for premiership points with Port and we haven't played one without him.

A finite term to this point of time was intended. It was discussed amongst some colleagues and summarised from that forum in this form.

It wasn't. Simple.

Which but don't you get? Watts was a bust after 9 yrs and 150 games. He was a disruptive influence both on his own behaviour (rehab, team rules, training habits, after-hours habits and putting his head over the ball/appetite for a contest) and from a media and supporter scrutiny point of view.

Elite skills, yes. Elite habits, no. The team could not rely on JW. He was best gone.

One player who won't be there is Jack Watts. The former Demon's trade to Port Adelaide was a key moment in Melbourne's off-season after the club made a "business decision" to part ways with the 26-year-old former No.1 pick.

It was a decision that saw president Glen Bartlett receive calls and emails to "intervene" in the trade, while Mahoney was taken to task on radio at an emotional time for fans.

Those at the club have no regrets however, after parting with Watts for pick No.31 and paying part of his wage at the Power.

There is a sense from insiders that the Demons did not believe they would not make their way to a Grand Final with Watts on their list.

His consistency in the contested aspects of the game and work ethic were doubted by key people at the Demons, and his fluctuations were tolerable from a younger player but not one with 153 games of experience.

In a nutshell, according to one insider: "Young blokes come in looking for role models and Jack wasn't a good role model for our players". “

I'm fascinated that the AFL's own website can be this critical of a current player. On the one hand, it's to be admired for its honesty; on the other it's hardly helpful to one of its contracted players. (I wonder also about the AFL's OH&S liability if a player it criticises like this subsequently suffers from depression). On balance, I think the AFL shouldn't be publishing these sorts of stories. That's what the media is for.

I know. I get it fine. I was responding to a poster suggesting that he was moved on to gain cap space for Lever, I agree the reasons you give are the reasons the club gave for moving him on, I was arguing exactly what you are.

You are joking surely. I don't recall any articles putting the boot into the AFL.  I guess the only explanation is that they are independent and the AFL is perfect.

I get what you're saying...except the AFL still has to take responsibility for what it's media unit publishes. For example, if the content is defamatory and the defamed party sues, it's the AFL which pays up. Hence, also, my point about OH&S.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
