He had a good first year with us but has been a bit inconsistent following on from that.

This is a real make or break year for Dom, he either steps up or falls back in the pack.

Dom’s improvement in leadership, during the first five or six weeks of training, was really noticeable. He’s again working in the midfield group, but he’s really starting to drive his teammates and build some standards around how we go about our training. Dom has 90 AFL games to his name and is set to enter his seventh AFL season – his fifth at Melbourne.

I was beginning to think that this would be a make or break year for Dom.

A thread such as this often boils down to a subjective interpretation of its premise - in this instance, the definition of 'break-out'. Regardless: Clayton Oliver. The kid has zero weaknesses across the many various disciplines within the sport and several areas in which he excels - some at a level already beyond all but a handful of players. In the history of football. In his second year. After arriving from the bush-leagues. Very little has to happen for it all to come together, and in a way that they'll be writing articles about the kid with 'break-out' as a reoccurring adjective and theme.

I wouldn't say he has "zero" weaknesses. One thing he needs to improve is his attitude to the umpires. If he keeps complaining to them about decisions that don't go his way, he'll never win a Brownlow.

I'm happy for him to have this weakness if it's his only flaw.

The kid looked very at home in the midfield group on wednesday squeeze in front of Petracca more than once and dished it out with speed and class, and please a request no more with the Ginger Ninger cringe worthy at best we can, will and must do better.

For breakout player, we have two developing backmen in Oscar and Frost. Frost is a good spoiler, great closing and breakaway speed as well as tackling and defensive pressure. Oscar has very good intercept mark and spoil, an elite kick (accuracy), and understands and supports well the defensive rotations.

To be breakout, both need to reduce brain fades re disposals especially when under pressure. 

As both have added bulk this off season, that can make them part of a formidable backline. It's been a very long (and too long) time that Melbourne has had such depth in the backline.

Billy stretch. Anyone who has seen him train this pre season i suspect would agree he’s going to be pushing very hard for selection. He looks a 15% better player than last year in my opinion and could well become a regular in the seniors 

 

Alex Neal bullen I think will improve again 

 

brayshaw and hogan will hopefully get a good run at it
