Jack Lukosius turned 17 in August and is not eligible for this year's draft ... but wait until this time next year.

The 194cm South Australian key forward prospect starred in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and last week kicked four goals on debut in a SANFL final for Woodville-West Torrens.

I thought I'd go early with a thread on him because every AFL club is going to want this kid on their list

    I watch him play last week and he would have to be in the top 5, reminds me a lot of James Hird (yes dirty comparison i know) and can seriously play.

    Not sure why Demonland would be overly excited about a potential top 5 pick next year. If we were a chance, well sure, lets read all about it.

    Only way we could look at picks that high is if we traded someone like Hogan at the end of next season.

    I shudder when I see an under age player staring in the SANFL.

    Toumpas was a gun for Woodville the year before his draft year...late debut coming into finals.

    Should also add Aish and a number of other kids who have struggled after good seasons in the SANFL.

    Unfortunately as we've found out, SANFL form doesn't necessarily translate.

    It could also be type of player. The stars of TAC and SANFL that don't win their own ball struggle at AFL level.

    Adelaide are really keen to get this kid. How keen? Test them Carlton...

    If I were Carlton i would forget the priority pick and look to trade their pick one for the Crouch boys.

    Added to Cripps it would give them a quick bump.

    The Crows will surely try and package picks and McGovern for Pick 1.  It's an interesting position for Carlton.  With Curnow and McKay  they don't really have a need for another young key forward.  So their decision is to either bypass the best player and go for need (midfielder Walsh) at 1.  Take Lukosius as best player available.  Or to get multiple picks (8, 15, 19 an example) and have a quantity not quality approach at the draft.  They probably have to take Walsh, which then leaves Gold Coast at pick 2 and Pick 3 who the Crows on draft night could try and sway.  The Suns desperately need a key forward but the go-home factor concern will be enormous.  It's quite interesting.  Wouldn't shock me if the Suns take the King brothers at 2 and 3 with Lukosius bizarrely sliding based on non-ability reasonings.  But you'd hope they would back their culture in and take him.

    Carlton are in a good position because more than likely McGovern alone will end up better than a tall they would select with their pick 1. So by trading pick 1 for a slightly worse off pick, and perhaps taking a midfielder with it, will just be a bonus, and history says it will more than likely result in a better outcome than a tall anyway. If I were Carlton I would jump at trading away pick 1. They still have Weitering developing down back, and they have both Curnow and McKay up forward. They are going to need to give Cripps some help in the coming years or he might pull the pin himself. Get in McGovern, get a young mid, have a tilt at another mid next year during FA, and get more development into McKay and Curnow - Carlton will be set up.

    You obviously haven't seen Lukosios play. No way i would take McGovern over him.

    Hype merchants were saying the same about Boyd, McCartin, Patton, Weitering, Francis, and many others I am sure (that is only in the past 5-6 years). There is two things here. Firstly, are talls taken early in the draft going to be better than an already proven quality tall? I would say its unlikely. I would take McGovern ahead of all players I mentioned above. Secondly, are talls taken early more likely to be more value than midfielders taken early? I would again argue that they wouldn't. Over the years there are far more examples of midfielders proving to be of better worth when taken early - as opposed to talls. 

    Carlton would be made not to the pull the trigger on McGovern and a pick downgrade.

    Lukosius is not a tall, he is practically the same size as Nat Fyfe and able to play anywhere. I have seem him live and he is the best SA kid I've seen since Pavlich; big call but ask any SA recruiter and they will say the same.

    Lot of talk about Lukosius now being available, as discussed by Sam Edmund on SEN this morning with Walter and Ben King seemingly Hardwick’s preferred KPF duo.

    He also added that Lukosius is getting fed up with being moved around the park as much as he has been and would like to settle as a KPF. Adelaide boy but apparently not wedded to returning home.

    He hasn’t lived up to his potential thus far, and has a bit of the Jack Watts’ about him in being beautifully skilled but perhaps not relishing the physical side of the game.

    But I reckon we could do a lot worse than getting him in to play that roaming role while JVR (and hopefully Petty) develop as more your stay at home types, especially if he’s available for a pick later than 20 or so.

    Went at 39 goals 22 behinds last year from 66 shots at goal, which is easily his best return from a scoring perspective. He'd potentially assist to address a need and no doubt would fall in front Shac, at least from a depth perspective. If he was gettable it would be prudent to enquire and depending on what was required to facilitate a trade, I'd be keeping my eye on this space from an MFC perspective.

    Has such good game sense and kicking skill. Can break games open. Preference to play forward. I’d love him off HB.

    Does he have enough drive and tenacity to fit into our culture? I’m sure those in the know in recruitment world would know about his fit. My gut tells me he wouldn’t be a good club fit. Perhaps too many years at the GC with lowish standards and a losing culture have taken its toll.

    Jack L is a gun, would thrive in our environment. Good speed, can jump, kicks it a mile and has a load of natural talent. 

    Got more grunt that JW, IMV. 

    Would be an outstanding get.

      Round 11, the second week of The Sir Doug Nicholls Round, kicks off on Thursday night with the Cats hosting the Bulldogs at Kardinia Park. Geelong will be looking to to continue their decade long dominance over the Bulldogs, while the Dogs aim to take another big scalp as they surge up the ladder. On Friday night it's he Dreamtime at the 'G clash between Essendon and Richmond. The Bombers will want to avoid another embarrassing performance against a lowly side whilst the Tigers will be keen to avenge a disappointing loss to the Kangaroos. Saturday footy kicks off as the Blues face the Giants in a pivotal clash for both clubs. Carlton need to turn around their up and down season while GWS will be eager to bounce back and reassert themselves as a September threat. At twilight sees the Hawks taking on the Lions at the G. Hawthorn need to cement themselves in the Top 4 but they’ll need to be at their best to challenge a Brisbane side eager to respond after last week’s crushing loss to the Dees on their home turf. The first of the Saturday night double headers opens with North Melbourne up against the high-flying Magpies. The Roos will need a near-perfect performance to trouble a Collingwood side sitting atop the ladder.

      The two teams competing at the MCG on Sunday afternoon have each traversed a long and arduous path since their previous encounter on a sweltering March evening in Sydney a season and a half ago. Both experienced periods of success at various times last year. The Demons ran out of steam in midseason while the Swans went on to narrowly miss the ultimate prize in the sport. Now, they find themselves outside of finals contention as the season approaches the halfway mark. The winner this week will remain in contact with the leading pack, while the loser may well find itself on a precipice, staring into the abyss. The current season has presented numerous challenges for most clubs, particularly those positioned in the middle tier. The Essendon experience in suffering a significant 91-point loss to the Bulldogs, just one week after defeating the Swans, may not be typical, but it illustrates the unpredictability of outcomes under the league’s present set up.

He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

      The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
