Ive rejigged the side into positions I think would give us a new lease of life and more  Benefit going forward. Hunt and Hibberd on the wings for a more attacking mindset.

Lever at CHB and Watts in Vince's old position. J. Smith who I rate very highly could even take OMacs spot if he doesn't come up.

Jetta OMac Watts

Brayshaw Lever Salem
Hibberd Oliver  Hunt
Petracca TMac  Melksham
Garlett. Hogan Pederson

Gawn Viney Jones

Joel Smith, Lewis, Harmes ,ANB

I think the club wants Lever to allow Hunt and Salem more time on the wings.

Plus it might save us from Vince taking kick outs, my least favourite 30 seconds in every game.

I would have that second least favourite, behind a Tmac/Omac switch of play in our defensive 50.

I usually watch through my fingers

I would like to see Garlett have a rotation through the middle in each quarter and Clarrie go forward for a period each quarter. Garlett can be quite creative at centre bounces and I believe Clarrie could be a difficult matchup in a forward pocket every now and then.

You only have to ask Jamie Shanahan to understand the importance of playing well in the final game of the season, because otherwise the coach has that image in his memory for up to six months.

As a result I'll be very surprised if we see T-Mac anywhere near the defence early next season - he'll line up at CHF in Rd 1 and with his huge tank will be asked to provide forward pressure and marking clout. And as we now know, he is an accurate set shot kick.

I've said this before, but I think Jonesy could play off a back flank - there are enough small forwards now that his size shouldn't hold him back and he's smart and courageous and bloody hard to beat one-on-one. He's also one of our top 3 most attacking kicks - I reckon he'd be a bit like McVeigh back there for us

Sending Jonesy back would mean that Bernie is no longer required back there. That doesn't necessarily spell the end as I reckon Bernie could play as a forward with his pressure tackling, courage, marking and kicking making him a useful option - a bit like a Glenn Lovett or how Peter Rohde used to be late in their careers.

And Jonesy to defence and Bernie up forward could give Trac a bit more time in the middle with Ollie, Jack Viney, and Dom.

Please don't forget Joel Smith and Vanders when factoring your 2018 line-ups - assuming both are fit, I'd have them in my best 22.

Some thoughts.

Jetta is too talented to just play back. I know he has been the real general

Back there but I think his desire could be used through the middle.

Id like to see jessie and tom as the forwards and weed taking the marks from the kick ins. He can mark but the forward line is too crowded.

Need outside players Salem, Hibberd, Hunt.

Bugg and Melksham on hff

Trac, brayshaw, oliver mids

Watts wing/outside mid

Frost ruck/wing/back attack

Oscar back defend

Apart from Tmac moving forward if we were to pick up Lever the only other player I can see moving up the ground is Hunt. I think the football department would be looking to see how they can get more out of his run and carry to get deeper forward entries in transition.

I know Joel Smith was starting 22 in round 1 last year, but through no fault of his own, didn't get the time to establish his position in the best 22 yet, nor have we had enough time to assess whether he's capable of being best 22 through consistent application. And Vanders has been too far out to know whether he can recapture his form from 2 years ago.

So it's perfectly understandable to not have them in the 22, pending next years 2 to 4 week experimental stints that Goodwin seems to use for each depth player looking to break in.

Just a question - when we are not kicking in from behinds (and lets be optimistic as we always are before the shyt hits the fan late in the season), like maybe the opposition don't score a lot of behinds (hopefully not a lot at all and the deep defenders have little to do), where do you place weed the rest of the time?

Let's consider how the FD might resurrect the wingman position and game. Not sort of midfielders but genuine wingmen. Leave the midfielders' work to Oliver, Viney, Jones, Petracca, ANB, AVB, Brayshaw Salem etc.

Say Sam Frost, Jack Watts and Jayden Hunt as rotating connector players dedicated to providing an outlet option for the back line and the skill/speed to rapidly transfer the ball to the forward line.

Two on the ground at any time with two way running between the 50s in the space between the square and the boundary. Not down the line but wider than the corridor with a licence to run, run and run and kick long to a well prepared and spread forward line who are aware of what is coming and how.

At the other end, provide a crowd to fill gaps and frustrate opposition forwards. When we win the ball, provide a moving target and become 60-80m power players who, with good coaching and a developed game plan,  could revolutionise the game. Nothing to lose. Can't be worse than the current, unsuccessful game plan.

Finally, let's change the tone of this topic and this site. Please restrict any comments to the merits, or otherwise of the proposal, not on the players.

Stretch is the ideal wingman if he can generate some overall improvement in his contested work....

Frost signs on for 2 years to me means TMac plays forward, especially if we land Lever. Trac and Clarry the midfield is yours along with Viney.

I did read somewhere that at this draft the club is looking for more mids suggesting Lewis, Vince and Jones will be on the flanks.

Hoges to be CHF roaming far and wide

He does the roaming fwd role not jessie.

We were killed by our lack of contested marking players out of defence this year

I must say I would have Jesse about 75% high forward including marking target for kick ins, shared with Max (if he decides to put footy ahead of media in 2018) with Tom McD doing the other 25%, both with sojourns into the mid...........unless of course that Weideman absolutely demands selection with consistent good VFL performances.

Even Stuart would be better, had he not unfortunately have passed away in 2011 aged around 80.

When is Hogans contract due? As this will be another distraction he will have to deal with. The media starting the "is he staying or going back west " debate and pressure.

He's out of contract at the end of 2019 so the media will already start writing articles about this sometime next year.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
