So it would appear that we need to clear Tom McDonalds contract in order to get Brown? If that is the case, and now GWS showing interest in Jesse Hogan, it seems that Ben Brown to Dees is not going to happen. Which probably means he will end up at Essendon

Apparently not the case.

More important than the Smith trade imo

Sure, but I'd argue Brown and a winger (or two) are absolute musts for us this off season.

Vanders, ANB, Brayshaw or Baker on a wing next year means we're stuffed.

Will seriously consider a name change on here to Sideshow Bob. If this pans out. 10 years or so with my Jakovich Homage might just have to go by the way side

What? That his contract is not a sticking point?

Correct, we can get him in and keep mcdonald. But i would guess that next year keeping Oliver would be harder and you don't want to be paying 600+ a year for a player to be in the VFL.

I'm actually bullish on Baker as a winger (i was thinking if we got smith, that baker would be able to learn off him and replace him in 2-3 years time. I really like him regardless (just hasn't been played much).

Each to their own, mate. I'm not on the auto delist Baker train, but I don't want us to rely on him to hold down a wing spot next year.

Yea i don't actually know if he will be good on it. He could be [censored] if given the whole year there. Presuming we will go hard for Phillips now making it a moot point (but i'd hate it if Baker left to another club and then got a run at it and became something pretty good).

As long as we get a decent winger to play opposite Langdon, it doesn't bother me what happens to Baker.

Do it in real life.

It has been posted on here more than once that getting Ben Brown is not dependant on moving on TMac. However it may impact future contract negotiations with others.

He won't be going to the Dons until @Dr evil says he's 100% going to the Dees.

I have hopes for Sauce Baker but I agree the others don’t inspire. I wonder if Rivers may develop on the wing.

Recruiting Ben Brown is absolutely central to our fortunes next year and beyond. I’m not that fussed losing out on Smith in part because there are viable alternatives. We have no alternative to Brown. Hoges attitude issues appear to be too much of a risk (which is a pity, I’m a big fan), Cameron and Daniher are moving elsewhere so its Brown or bust.

I think playing the Burgess card is smart given his knee injury. I don’t see any “destination club” waiting in the long grass to gazump us ala Smith. I’m confident but I think this is one time I want to see the club pull out all the stops to get a player in. If Burgess has given him the all clear then give him a good salary and 4 years.

It’s rare a 28 yr old Coleman medallist comes on the market. Get this deal done MFC.

Unless I am being told a porky, someone very close to Ben Brown has confirmed he's 100% to Dees. Bombers have offered him big big money, yet he's happy to take less to come to the Dees. Eat a ? bombers ?

Also apparently he played with a floating bone in his knee most of the year which would've been a big part of his performance drop this year. Since his surgery recently, he is ready to roll.

Very exciting - sounds like he should return to strong form*

*as long as the Dees learn to kick inside 50 and don't bomb it over his head...

Like it Dazzle.

I want Weid to get stronger through the hips and core. Not necessarily put on more weight, just get stronger so that he doesn't get pushed off the ball as easily.

He has many good attributes that we underestimate, and is somewhat a confidence player. Presents well, gets to contests, can hold a grab (despite the naysayers) and knows where the cumbers are are around him. He knows his role, but must get stronger to improve it.

Also needs to nail more set shots.

All of these things are relatively simple to fix in the scheme of things, pending a big preseason.

I'm a Weid fan, so to speak...

I’d like Weideman to do all sorts of things, perhaps with another club! I’m doubting our investment in him will pay off. FWIW I would retain Tom while trying to get Brown . The Weid would be very tradeable

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
