secretly id like to know...reality is 13's the go  ( I reckon )  .We'll be safe

I reckon 14 is the go, and we play Adelaide in Adelaide in the first final and beat them by 40 odd points like we did earlier in the year.....

He threw up at quarter time.

He can have a ralph every week if we have a first quarter like that as far as I care.  Must have been about the second time this year we were up at the first break.

You mean as in Bula Bula?

That Darwin effect, hey?

Makes you start really strongly against top 4 teams...

Deadly.

We got in front and we stayed in front. I'm not used to this strange game pattern.

Isn't Daisy in Cairns doing the bulldogs game?

She was sitting in front of me up until 3/4 time.

They must broadcast from a studio.

Perhaps we should play more games up there rpfc!

Wouldn't surprise me from MMM.

What has been good with playing guys to try and get them back into form - Gawn Hogan and today Jack Watts is that they have all held their own . Not being beaten by an opponent running off them causing havoc at the same time not finishing marks (  game touch ) or dominating like they can .

They have all worked at it and yes rusty to begin with but have improved or will to where we need them to be .

I watched the 2nd quarter again just now and Watts was running with discomfort , hoping he hasnt tweaked it again.

No word about how Trenners went. Only the 15 disposals and not many tackles. How did people see his game?

Nothing special but made some good decisions in hot situations.

Thats the way I viewed him also.

No clangers, but when he had the ball, he was quite good.

People are way too harsh on Trengove. He played the team game, defended superbly, gave us a little drive, and was calm and collected with the ball. It was a Jetta-esque game. I reckon he can find a place in the squad as a small wingman and loose defender. Not sure he keeps his spot when Jones comes back but he needs a string of 3-4 games to cement himself.

What's being forgotten is that it was Jack's first AFL game in over a year, against a top 4 side. The reality is that Jack did everything asked of him, and did it really well. I reckon Goody and the coaching staff will be rapt with his role playing. All in all an excellent effort considering the adjustment in standard.

I watched Trenners pretty closely today from level 2 behind the goals. Most of the above are spot on but ill add some thoughts:

- he only played 90 minutes (of the >120 minutes), about the same as Mellsham and Salem, with JKH our lowest at 82.

-he effectively played on the left back pocket on Sam Grey for 90% of his time on ground. Picked up Boak a couple of times.

- Acted as a structural general, pointing and setting players and positions constantly

- Didn't attack much: only left his place in the zone when his direct opponent ran into the contest. This happened less info the second half.

- Mostly got possessions linking across half back either when we switched our as a safe option.  Got involved a couple of times when he was in the play.

- I saw him get beaten by his specific man twice.  Once by Grey up the field on the HFF (the ball went out of centre bounce, Grey got their first, and got an inside 50 that resulted in a goal) and once during a run on play by Boak I think, as a chain of possessions caught our structure out

- He obviously isnt fast. That didn't matter when our structure was working.  He wasn't going to chase guys down but was fine in general play.

My thoughts are he offers more than many.  I think there is a role for him when Vince and Lewis decline but unsure where he sits in the coaches eyes behind Wagner and Smith in the longer term. Does Melksham fit into this group too or is he a forward now? Trenners didn't play mid, and he didn't attack much, so it's clear to me what his role is at the moment. Just wait and see if they think he is handy depth.

Nash, that is a much better comeback than others.

Considered, and insightful. Thank you.

Still disagree that his game today was anything less than unacceptable.

By your thoughts, he should not be played, if returning from injury during the finals.

We need better than than from Jack. He is capable of much more.

On this we at least agree. He is so much better than that, which is why I allow him this one week returning from injury to be off. Hogan was as well his first game back, today he looked a lot more like the Hogan we know.

To me you're original comments seemed to remind me of the original Watts bagging we had for so long, where for some reason his bad games we something of a crime.

Great post and yes it was Boak

Interesting ...

who would have thought in distance covered Hogan was second only to ANB.

Well done Hoges

Well well well, what a week in footy does.
Always good to have the wood over both SA teams in the 1 year.

If we can stay fit I would peg us to be a chance to win every game for the remainder of the year to be honest.
GWS aren't as big and bad as everyone says, North will get pumped by us next week, Saints, Brisbane and Collingwood all speak for themselves.
No trips west, no trips to the NT left for the year and our injuries are all coming back at the right time and we only managed to lose 2 games. I am up and about tell you that.

Hibberd and Nev wouldn't surprise me if they were both named in the AA 40 players list. Good to see Hogan have influence, Viney did well and Melksham has really showed his value and although not yet, I am starting to feel like he is start to show us why he is getting paid what he is.

Time to start believeing I think people!

Watts was terrible, one of his worst ever games. Half-hearted, weak and lazy.

If his skills and touch were off then he could be forgiven, but not effort.

Not everyone can play well, but no need to sugar coat it.

When you commented on the match day thread that he had "started well…", were you joking? Because to me it was clear as day he was well off the pace.

Interesting that those Telstra GPS stats put Trengove as:

a) the second highest average moving speed on the ground; and

b) the third highest distance for "distance covered at high speed".

*In both categories he was Melbourne's top ranked player today with only PA players above him.

So he may not have a great top speed but he has a tank and very high work rate. He obviously keeps on the move to maintain his positioning as the play moves too.

Yes, sarcasm doesn't come across easily in text.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
