Media Going Hysterical

I just can't believe how over the top the media have been since Friday night. We lose our first game in 5 weeks & the media have completely gone overboard. Danny Frawley claiming because of our performance we were drinking our on bath water reading to much about ourselves. Micky Malthouse saying the same & telling Melbourne to grow up. In my opinion this is way over the top has anyone taken into account our 3 concecutive 6 day breaks the last 6 day break coming back from Perth in a night match which also meant we had to stay in Perth until Sunday. What about the injury list going into friday night we had 5 of our best 10 players out Jones, Hogan, Watts, Salem & Garlett. Let me see another club have 5 of there best 10 players out after 3 concecutive 6 day break & the last one coming home from Perth in a night match having to stay in Perth overnight let see how they perform & i bet my life if they performed like we did & were flat they would excuse them. Lets just hold off for a few weeks & settle down

The Media are not happy that Melbourne is actually reinventing itself. We are still remembered for Tanking in the Media not for winning Big Games.

It is going to be a tough road, the media will make sure of that. If the MFC rise then one of the "Established" will fall and the media don't particularly want that.

We haven't been part of serious action for 53 years, most of the media would be 20-45.

I hope Goodwin has great support around him, it could get very bumpy. But we have to get through it by winning games, ugly if needed.

Yep add Robert Walls to the list saying "We got ahead of ourselves" I think if we didn't have the Bugg incidents (if you include the instagram beat up prior to the dogs game) the 4 players drinking & Olivers little rant on twitter we wouldn't be hearing about these comments about getting ahead of ourselves so we have bought a SMALL and I mean minute amount upon ourselves but it certainly is over the top just like they were all saying we were premiership favorites last week.. The media is hysterical & just go with whatever the flavour of the week is, they built us up just so they could bring us down. Your right no side would have coped with the schedule & injuries we've had the last month & to come away with 1 loss by 6 goals to the inform side in the comp under the circumstances is a credit to the club... Just ignore the media, in the good times & bad

And that is why i hate any media, the more some one is down the more they just want to kick you in the guts.

The media just tell c$#* and the masses fall for it, time and time again.

It's what the media do. Like last week the article 'Key Giant Out' with a picture of Max Gawn they engage in sensational headlines and click bait.

Internally the club will be working on tweaking how we play and adjust to our opposition. If we gain 2 of Hogan, Watts and Garlett and Tyson is fit, along with our younger players such as Oliver, Petracca and Hunt using the 9 day period between games to reset the I think we will be right for coming weeks.

This ^^^^^^

Dig deep Dees ...all...players  , fd....us !!

Funny in a fashion. We say media. It's really just certain vocal camps.

Why are they so virulent ? Who stands to lose what ?

I'm intrigued.

A bit more to this than meets the eye me thinks.

Most media discourse is systematic, so i immediately start thinking ...motives !

More than selling papers... always is. Folk dont own media to sell things... it's about controlling directions.

Curious ?

The media in general must be bi-polar.

Last week they were all writing how we could win the flag. We lose one game and suddenly we are getting ahead of ourselves.

I think the only people getting ahead of themselves is the media.

They all need a headline to stay relevant. Frawley and Walls are failed coaches, and Malthouse is still fuming about Collingwood 6 years later. They all work in the media because otherwise they'd have to admit that they don't have skills outside of a ball sport.

Gerard Whateley, a media commentator who has earnt his respect in the broader community by actually being good at his job and not just as ex-athlete, said something very interesting tonight. He basically said he watched Melbourne run out on Friday night and thought 'hang on, they don't have the cattle here'.

I hope they all go off us. I want everyone to write us off. It will galvanise us.

I don't think this is an issue exclusive to Melbourne.  The media nowadays has zero concept of nuance and sophistication of thought.  A team is either 'incredible' or in 'disarray' - all dependent on how they played the weekend past.

Not to worry, if we beat Carlton we'll be a 'top 4 threat' and their rebuild will be 'back to the drawing board'.

The media smell blood. They are not picky who gets hurt. But they do have favourites

look at Essendon. The CEO & The Board should have been charged

The CEO of the day bolted and has said nothing.

If it were us we would have been eaten alive

US v THEM

We have to be strong

Same media that were saying we were contenders last week.

FAKE NEWS !!!

Sad.

Everything is NOW

Yesterday is long dead

David King came out pumping us up big time. It was ridiculous.

  • We barely beat Collingwood. (middle of the road)
  • Smashed the Bulldogs (who were absolute rubbish)
  • Pinched a win over West Coast while we were down on players. (f'ing great win)

I think most people on here could see that the Sydney game was going to be extremely difficult for us to win due to injuries and short breaks, yet King comes out telling the supporters to wake up and enjoy the ride. Blind [censored] Freddy could see that we were 1 injury away from packing it in.

Now we have the rest of the d!ckheads gunning for us.

King really is a moron. He is a shitty analyst.

Perhaps its just their emotional reaction to getting ahead of themselves last week.

I think most dees fans weren't  confident about a result last Friday. The media needed a story and decided to tout the dees all week long as contenders. Turned out to be a bit premature and now they're backtracking FAST!

Another week of the AFL media treating footy issues like they are the most important things on planet earth - hate the media around the AFL

Wayne Carey said on Talking Footy that there were excuses for us on Friday night, citing the four games in 18 days, travel from Perth and injuries.

Just when I think someone gets it, in the next breath he goes "no excuses for them next week though".

Not sure how an 8 day break is going to help when around 7 of our 10 keys players are out but that's the level of analysis you get in the footy media.

Second time today that i'm in complete agreement with you 39.

What i would add is the television 'media' as it pertains to AFL football is 94% ex afl footballers and almost all of them are, truth be told, actually really, really stupid. And i don't say that lightly. Exceptions to the rule, like Tim Watson and Ling, are often just plain annoying.

The AFL love to look to the states for comparison in professional sport. They should look at their media. Yes, both the NFL and NBA TV media have ex players in the mix they are in the minority and are often really good media people. An example is Shaq. Funny, smart as a whip and insightful.

I make the TV media distinction because tragically the print media is dead as far as sports is concerned.

Ok, let me make myself unpopular!

I reckon virtually every post on this thread is a 'woe is me', hand wringing post. It's true that 'the media' will try and wring out any drop of controversy and often present anything but a balanced view. But to suggest they're out to get lil' old Melbourne because they don't want their old favourite "Established to fall"  is just nonsense.

A week ago we were the darlings of the media, last year the success of the Bulldogs, (another minnow club), was greeted with incredible acclaim. Mark Stevens and Scot Gullan are Bulldogs supporters.

We are the story of the last four days and will be tomorrow. Then the spotlight will move to something/one else. As the old saying used to go, 'today's headlines are tomorrows fish and chips wrappers'.

As for haven't been part of serious action for 53 years, c'mon!  Have you forgotten 87 to 94 - a Grand Final and a couple of Prelims,  98 to 06, - a Grand Final and a couple of prelims.

The so-called media is not a monolithic entity where everyone thinks alike. There are some particularly strange and very slanted people like Dwayne Russell and Mark Robinson. Then there are people who are quite different, like Gerard Whateley and David Schwarz. This thread sounds very much like a Donald Trump tirade against the media.

As if this is going to make it tough for the club going forward, if anything the current sh*tstorm should galvanise the players and the club. As for Demonlanders, apparently we are not made of such stern stuff, so we will quiver like a blancmange.

Ok, now I'm gonna take a deep breath!

They do this all the time - build a team up too much and smack them down

im surprised anyone is surprised by this

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
