All the Melb Clubs were standing around for the first four days of the draft waiting for the biggest transfer of the year to fall over, and it didn't, even with the inordinate amount of pressure put on by the rabble. Cool heads prevailed same as last year........

Forget the write ups about who won, they all picked up replacement crumbs. We built onto our side.....

Agree 'Willmoy', for all the talk and the write ups on the likes of Port & EFC we were the only club to make a serious structural change for the better to our team in the trade period.

The others were just taking a punt and/or shuffling the deck chairs.

Hey Team - @Satyriconhome and probably @Drunkn167 any word on whats happened to Balic. Not on the injury list last 2 weeks and also not named. Hope the boy is alright - I’m assuming mental health related?

I heard he was a mate of the Yarran that passed away so maybe still in PERTH? Unsure if true though

Thanks mate. Poor guy. Honestly hope he’s alright. Watching his interviews before and after going to Freo - you just don’t want to see anyone go through that, especially someone so young.

So we're at the half way mark of the year now, what's everyone's thoughts on Balic? Personally I would have thought he would have snagged a couple of games by now, but he also seems to be developing quite well down at Casey.

He's on a 1 year deal so will be interesting to see how the rest of the year plans out for him.

If we had been struggling a little, or had more injuries, then I think he would have been in line for some game time.  As it stands we've been in good form and had minimal injuries, so he's probably a little unlucky to miss out to this point.

I'd like to see him get a run in the coming weeks as, from all reports, he really has something to offer up forward with his pace, skills and footy nous.

Can only go by what I have seen on him at Casey and I can’t see that he will get a game this year unless we have some injuries up forward ( knocks on wood). He seems smart around goals and gets into good positions.

Maybe the one year contract is based more on development like you said and easing into our system rather than the club expecting him to play several games in the AFL. It’s only an opinion and certainly wouldn’t be disappointed if he gets a game soon. Hope it works out for him.

Seems to be going along nicely at Casey and may be worth having a look at him at senior level soon.  There may be some questions asked about Spargo, Vince and Hannan at the next match committee meeting, maybe a call up soon rather than later??

Ive only seen Balic play once, and it was against us last year at the G.  He didn’t seem troubled by the step up then, in fact he played very, very well.

Not exactly banging the door down at Casey. You would have to think that there are others ahead of him, such as Bugg, Tyson, JKH. What role would he play? Replacement for either of Hannan or Fritsch? No thanks. Would like to see him stay on the list though as his upside is youth

This was my thought exactly,  as he has missed a fair chunk of football in the past 2 years due to injuries and off field issues. Think this year was a development year for him just to try and play as much football as he can.

Highly unlikely Balic will get a senior game with 6 weeks remaining. He looked ok early in a couple of VFL games that I saw. I noticed he didn’t play against Footscray last weekend.

Question is, will he get another contract?

Thoughts?

I thought at the start he was developing just fine and would get another contract, but i dont think so now.

I thought the same but seems he’s stagnated a tad. I’m not aware of any major injury concern and I’m with you, an extension looking less likely now.

Agree that he seems to have stagnated but I think he's worth another year. If JKH and AVB are extended he may be one to go.

As supporters we have no real basis of knowing whether he deserves another year.

What's his attitude like ?  Is he doing extras ?  Is he coachable ?  And many more elements determine whether an unproven player is offered another contract.

Agree and if you move him on,strategy would be to improve the the list as a result.

Not sure how we can do that with our trade picks, nor do I think he would have much trade value.

He’s got a few weeks to show something.

Seems like a good, considered user of the ball...

I heard he was late to training the other week. Has talent, but missing VFL games for whatever reason and not getting VFL midfield time are both concerns to me. Things like Vanders staying healthy and JKH just maybe making a case for his career to stay alive aren't probably in Balic's favour. Still, plenty of games left.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
