Bombers in the Land of the Fakirs... AFL in India

Heard on the radio that Essendon are considering a game in India.

No problem with that but they should not be able to get away with the away game only that was gifted to Port in China.

Also the Port game required  a substantial AFL investment in respect of which the AFL have very quiet about its renewal for next year.

Practically India during our football season is hot and traditionally the crowds do not attend sporting events other than for 20:20 cricket and to a lesser extent one dayers.

Travel time to Mumbai from Melbourne is around 15 hours by direct flight so it's not insubstantial

Complete waste of time and money.

Taxation Loop?

Nah.... I think it is another team trying to get away with the daylight robbery committed by Port.

Also they probably want to get into the AFL budget before it is used on other things.

Imagine us being paid by the AFL to play an away game against the Suns overseas. We'd be laughed at!

It's a complete Junket. Gill has learnt well from Demetriou.

$pend as much as you can whilst in office, and change as many rules as possible so the Broadcasters can cram in more advert breaks

And the Delhi Belly and ring of fire.

food in India is pretty good actually and the winter weather is delightful.

There is a whole cuisine of street food called chaats that are absolutely delicious. Think Tacos or tapas but way cheaper

Love Indian food but it can be dangerous especially street food. Haven't been there for 30 years and got sick often on both my trips there. Eaten street food in places like Laos, China and Vietnam without problems many times. The worst case was being stuck in a stinking hot airport transit lounge for about 18 hours. Couldn't get out and there was no food or drinks for sale. Only water was from a water cooler which I was forced to drink or die of thirst.  Had to be hospitalised when I got back here.

For those familiar with cricket, Dharamsala is the perfect place to play any sport. Currently 27 degrees and sunny with fresh air coming off the Himalaya's. Probably better to play it in early May though as June it is getting a little hotter. I doubt AFL footballers would be on the street eating street food though, they'd be eating 5 star hotels.

Travel time is about 8 hours to KL, and then 5 hours to Mumbai or Delhi. 13 rather than 15.

If the game was in Mumbai, it would need to be March IMO, or late August night time after an afternoon monsoon shower. No way you'd play it in May-July

That was bad luck but don't give up.

I spend half of the year at least in Asia and the street food is the way to go.

KL is remarkably clean from a street food viewpoint so you were doubly unlucky

that ground has to be one of the most perfect looking grounds in the world. I was so tempted to go there for the recent tests. My schedule did allow for Pune but the ground there was a new concrete bowl devoid of character about 20 k outside town so I gave it a miss.

The altitude might bother the players. Dharmasala is more like Tibet than typical India. 1000 to 1500 metres higher than anywhere where footy is played in Australia.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
