leucopogon 1,519 Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 (edited) Wasn't May in the grand final sprint last year? From memory he finished ahead of our own Jayden Hunt. Edit: he was pipped by Hunt on the line but was substantially quicker over the first 20-30 m. See for yourself here. Definitelye no slow coach. Edited September 27, 2018 by leucopogon 3 1 Quote

DubDee 26,813 Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 Anyone else worried about recruiting May? Everyone says he is proven but I don't think you are really proven until you have played for a decent side and have played in pressure situations - big crowds. May has done neither. 1 Quote
Red and Blue realist 2,063 Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 I'm not in favor of May, unless he comes as a free agent next year. I just don't see that any potential upside is that much greater in what we already have in OMac and Frost, in fact if you track their careers at the same point OMac is equal too or better than May and May only kicked on from where OMac is now (so with another pre-season OMac will be even closer to where May is now). May has never played more than 20 games in a season, and for all those saying that we get big bags kicked on our defenders, Reiwoldt kicked 10, Kennedy 5 and a few big forwards kicked 4 against the Suns with May in the team. Yes I know they were easy to score against, but clearly May still wasn't the gorilla tamer people want. His best roles have been when he's had a the freedom to go and mark the ball, but that's what we've got Lever for. 1 Quote
Matsuo Basho 1,053 Posted September 27, 2018 Posted September 27, 2018 Priority No.1 signing this guy. Forget that he is not 200cm. May is a hard-as-nails, quick, nicely skilled fullback with more than a touch of the ‘unsociable’ about him. The Suns didn’t make him captain for no reason. If we’re going to seriously threaten for the pennant supporters need to let go of the idea that a combo of Frost and Oscar in the key defensive posts is going to get us there. It isn’t. I suspect Frost may be off to his third club if we succeed in bringing May in. The Suns could definitely use him if they lose their best defender to us. 3 Quote

Why did Hawthorn recruit Frawley? He'd done neither. He was recruited on his body of work as a defender and ended up being crucial to their finals campaign to win a premiership. and then you've got Lynden Dunn who would be a walk up start to take Kennedy if he was fit for a grand final No defender for a bottom team gets the opportunity to prove themselves until their team gets back to finals. Doesn't mean they're not capable of thriving. It's a calculated risk you take. Edited September 27, 2018 by johndemonic 1 Quote

If the Suns don’t like what Melbourne (or Collingwood) offer in trade they have the option of holding the player for another year then getting in all likelihood Band1 FA compo for him at the end of 2019. They will be telling May “look after us or we will hold you to your contract.” No way they are letting him go for anything less than a first round pick. Ben Brown, Hawkins, Buddy, Kennedy all get a hold of him on a lead or in a one on one too often, hence why Frost became so important to us during the latter part of the year due to his size and speed. I think people are kidding themselves to assume May wouldn't improve the side. He is definitely an upgrade on OMac. When Lever comes back into the side our backline should be sorted for around 5 years with Lever and May at FB and CHB respectively with either OMac or Frost playing alongside them. Collingwood and Hawthorn are chasing him if you believe the rumours and they are top 4 rivals. They are both seeking a replacement for Dunn and Frawley respectively. If we obtain May we weaken their future prospects and improve ours in the process by picking up May. If we can get May for a mid first rounder or less you'd be pretty happy. There aren't too many other KPD options out there to improve our backline at the moment and he would definitely help reduce the bleeding that's been happening when we aren't controlling the midfield on our off days. Agree with this, it seems logical and May has room to develop and blend his skills to the needs of our team, providing that he trains hard, works hard, and recognises our impressive player chains downfield. To me, May might become a similar Demon backman to Peter Rhode, moderately mobile, very tough, always going for the ball, a good deliverer and feeder for teammates, and a protectionist that stays on his feet for incoming gorillas and Filth-esque blowflies out to get on some under-the-counter brown paper bag provident fund on a regular basis in the car that occupies Eddie's parking space. Frosty, Lever, Hibberd, Nev, possibly Salem and May has a ring to it - just send OMac forward if he can develop some speed running. Then allow Max and Preuss to drop back, as well, on those occasions when they feel it might be necessary. Quote

I'm not going to say he ain't a quality fullback, but i don't think Steven May is the be all and end all. Let's not forget Oscar was one of our better players while Lever was in the side. Now we are chasing May who has played around [censored] all his life. It's easy to look good when your teammates are all 20 years old, undersized and still learning the craft. Yes he would basically take over Hogan's wage, but Hogan actually earned his wage. 1 Quote
