Free Kick Against Christian Salem in the last quarter

Can Someone please tell me what that free kick was awarded against Christian Salem for in the last quarter with 13.32 left in the last quarter with the score 11.11.77 to 12.14.86. It was just outside our 50m line Christian Salem did not take possesion of the ball & was dragged off the ball & thrown over the boundary line the North player grabbed the ball & the umpire called advantage. It can't be advantage unless a free kick is awarded if a there is no free kick awarded it is play on not advantage. He didn't take possession so it can't be for holding the ball or a throw i have looked at this about 10 times now & i can't work it out can someone please tell me what it was for

If it was that #16 umpire just what would you expect. The worst umpire I have seen this year. JUST not up to umpire standards.

There's been mention Salem could be in trouble for an elbow to the head, is it for that incident?

No that was a different incident. This one had me totally flummoxed, taken out front on without the ball and bulldozed over the line while the ball rolled on and Salem didn't get a free but somehow gave one away!

I think the decision was high as he  sort of grabbed his head. I too assumed it was our free for holding.

It was bad, but that Hibberd deliberate call potentially takes the cake.

It was a shocking free in any case and even after calming down I still want a please explain sent him.

The bloody umpires were joking with north players at 3/4 time... such a bad look in a game where the umpiring was painfully one sided

yep. I saw them having a good old laugh with the Norf players. The club should be sending in a complaint. both Salems and the delliberate calls were gob smacking

Id be very surprised if the MFC has the gonads to instigate a 'please explain'

We don't do that sort of thing chaps you know

We don't do a lot of things

Stop with this "please explain" BS. It was a bad umpiring performance but making a song and dance about it deflects attention away from the real issue and dilutes actual player performance. I'll be disappointed if the club said anything. We didn't lose because of the umpiring. Get over it.

Praha , indeed the bigger issue was our poor performance.

It would be negligent though to simply dismis the umpiring. That was quite simply one of the most attrocious umpiring displays I've ever seen.

It actually does warrant a question by the club, not as sore losers but as a concerned party.

When even the nuff nuffs in the commentary box become agitated and flumoxed then you have to wonder.

It was for too high. Salem had his arm up going for the ball and when he was tackled without it because his arms were up got the north player high. Was one of the mout baffling frees I have ever seen paid.

Being at the ground, it looked like Norf were into us all day, and we copped the Umpiring from hell.

Reading the reports, it sounds like we started the niggle, and what I observed were retaliations.  Maybe we started something we didn't understand - we started with a bit of niggle, and the umps were off-side to us all day.  Any small thing, they were already convinced that we were the baddies and had to be punished.  Norf were the poor suffering little angels that had to be protected.  No wonder they were joking at 3/4 time.  And any time they punched us?  Just fair payback.

I was howling blue murder in the stands - but what if it was stupidity of our own design?

I had Norf supporters around me who were clapping that decision.  Ignorant wastes of space.  Wood clearly knocked his handpass over the line and they called it deliberate.  On a day of shocking decisions, that was the worst.  Not only that, the umpire who was there called it out, yet another umpire from 50 meters away over ruled him.  Ridiculous.

And for this reason, I expect the please explain to be behind closed doors and we'll never hear of it. To do otherwise would be to make excuses.

Thus, people need to stop demanding that we issue a please explain.

And yet im fully confident they'll do just that ... Come up with an even more ridiculous adjudication at some point .

The umpiring performance all over was deplorable. Not biased, just substandard, to put it kindly.

How many players (both sides) while tackled were ridden into the ground (also known as pushed in the back (15.4.5(b))) with no penalty?

Plus players running too far, running through the "protected zone", moving off the line of the mark.... all the usual [censored] that is unpunished in every game every week.

If ever there's a time for the video ref (the individual that adjudicates score reviews) to notify the field umpire and halt the game due to an incorrect call then these are the instances.

"Umpire Nicholson, the Hibberd hand ball was actually smothered beyond your vision, please commence a boundary throw-in."

The umpires lost control of the game it seemed, which shows it was a poor performance on their behalf.

How in a fiercely contested contest you can pay 22 free kicks to 10, or whatever it was, is ridiculous.

They missed some very clear ones, none more so than Higgins holding the ball in front of North's goal. Didn't get his foot anywhere near it and the umpire was right there.

Scene: AFL house. Gil McLachlan, Simon Lethlean and Hayden Kennedy are sitting in armchairs around a blazing fire, drinking Kweichow liqueur in Southern China branded balloon glasses.

GM: Hayden, what's this bullsh!t I'm hearing about the umpiring in that North game yesterday?

SL: What? I was at that game. Looked pretty good to me.

HK: Gee, I thought the umpires executed perfectly according to directions.

GM: ..... what's that mean?

HK: Err .... ten out of ten.

GM: What's all the whinging for then? Melbourne AND North are complaining about it!

HK: Maybe we didn't explain our interpretations of the interpretations clearly enough.

GM: Well get on the front foot man! Get on the radio and explain yourself! We can't have the umpiring of our game compromised. You know I'm red hot on that.

SL: Calm down, Gil. Hayden, it's clear we need to put an interpretation on the interpretations of the interpretations.

GM: That's the kind of thing I'm talking about! Clear it all up once and for all.

HK: Sounds good to me!

GM: Get on it then. Funny how these minor complaints pop up week after week in this era of the best umpiring of footy ever.

SL: I know. Crazy, isn't it?

That was so amazingly bad!!  Higgins took 3 or 4 steps, was tackled and misses the ball.  You could clearly hear the umpire say 'skill error'!

Skill error!!  I went ballistic!  Since when is a skill error a reason not to pay a free.

While we are talking biases - the commentary was one of the worst ever - exonerating north players while claiming ours staged the effects - it even spilled over into their news bulletins.  A deliberate attempt to influence any MRP members watching the game or the news, knowing that 'force' is a criteria.

Edit:  Jimmy Bartel is an MRP member, he was also on the Ch 7 commentary team. Very susceptible to commentator biases, however unconscious that may be.

You seriously think that umpiring was evenly bad for both sides???

Bottle of Johnny Walker Black Label for the person who can find the words "skill error" in the AFL 2016 Laws of Australian Football. (There doesn't seem to be a 2017 version.)

I'll make it easy. Find just the word "skill" anywhere in the rule book.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
