If we're comparing Lever to Rance, it is only fair to point out that Weidman is tracking about the same as Matthew Lloyd after the same number of games... we definitely should be anticipating a big round 1!

Rance is something like 7 years older. I think Lever has a natural build but will take more time to build the strength to be able to be a better one on one defender. His level of concentration and timing is pretty outstanding. If he can be as good as Josh Gibson or Rance he could anchor our backline for many years.

But if we're allowed to invent and praise achievements for players, though they have in fact not achieved that, can't we just say 'Oscar McDonald - Brownlow Medalist'???

you can say that..if you think that oscar mcdonald is likely to win a friggin brownlow. lol!

i'd say lever is a 95% chance of earning AA honours at some point in his career.  Oscar Mcdonald 0%. if you want me to rephrase i'll say you compared Lever, 'a likely AA in the future, who has already made the AA squad, to Oscar mcdonald.

I say just get the deal done and worry about trading back into the first round next year. Lever will make our entire back half stronger and this will have a flow on effect to the midfield.

F@#k Adelaide! Play hardball Dees...

Lever already said he will walk to the draft. That option is real! Surely he gets to the Dees like Ball got to the Pies.

Pick 10 & 2018 2nd round is very reasonable.

Is Jake Lever Alex Rance? No...

Take the Picks and move on Adelaide. We will even throw in some tissues you sooks!!! ?

I have read the replies thus far, personally two first draft picks is a bit rich. I recall when we played Adelaide in SA after giving them a start we wiped them off the park.  I went to that game and Lever had little to no impact we just cut through their defence.  Don't know how good he is,  he played ok in the grand final but how good is he really a lot of potential but 2 first round draft picks hmmmm. Don't forget we gave up the majority of our picks in the 2016 draft meaning that for 3 consecutive we won't have a first round pick, wow he better be worth it

I'm pretty sure Lever didn't play that game.

Yep its a given

2011 Rory Taggert, Josh Tynan, James Sellarm Jai Sheehan, Tom Couch, James Magner, Leigh Williams.

2010 Lucas Cook, Troy Davis, Daniel Nicholson, MIchael Evans, Kelvin Lawrence, Robert Cambell, Tom Macnamara, Tom McDonald, Jeremy Howe, Jordie McKenzie, Jake Spencer

We nailed those two drafts. Set us up for failure....

Hence why I  said get them write (right)

Rance is a pretender. As are the entire Richmond side bar Martin.

Well that makes them a team full of pretenders with a premiership

This was talked about on SEN yesterday. They said Level is on par if not ahead of Rance when they were at the same age.

Absolutely has the potential to be a 10 year, A grade defender for us.

And Lever also has very similar stats to Rivers after the same number of games. Means little at this time. Weideman, by the way, has kicked more goals than Hudson at the same age.

OK that must explain it then, didn't Lever play in that game?.

Nope. And it was very noticeable, because he was a pivotal reason we struggled against them the second time. He's very Rance like. Sides have to keep it away from him otherwise his positioning and ability to spoil is so good that he kills the contest. Cannot wait to have him in the red and blue.

Reported today that we are considering giving up our first round pick this year AND first round pick next year. If we cave and do that trade, I'd be disgusted with the club. We hold all the cards! Adelaide have an OUT OF CONTRACT PLAYER REQUESTING A TRADE ONLY TO MELBOURNE FC. If we somehow overpay, despite having them over a barrel... god I'll be ropable. Have some balls Dees!

You could say he's 2015 QB Adam Oxley-like

Whilst it hasn't happened yet (to my recollection) - if he walks into the draft it is not a lock that we will get him. The likes of Collingwood and Bulldogs will get first crack at him. No-one needs to trade for him - the clubs lower than us just have to convince him that their club is a good fit and they can meet his financial demands.

And pick up a player that doesn’t want to join your club and on top of that suddenly come up with $800k on a maxed out salary cap. No chance

I believe they will be giving us a late first/early 2nd round pick back to equalise that trade LT

This post reminds me of the howls of indignation during the 2015 draft period before Mahoney and co worked some magic, which netted two top 10 picks and our current Best & Fairest winner.

How about we have a bit of trust and not climb walls every time we hear a suggestion, or even a deal ?

Melbourne give:
2017 1st round (pick 10)
2018 1st round
2017 2nd round (pick 27)

Melbourne get:
Jake Lever
2017 1st round (pick 18) - from Brisbane via Charlie Cameron

Given the strength of the 2018 draft and our unpredictable results - we could finish with pick 6-16 I'd say, it's a strong no deal from me.

I think Charlie Cameron might be worth more than pick 18. If Brisbane are willing to pay pick 12 for him - he's in contract - then that's a deal I'd be willing to consider, although I'd rather keep pick 10. I'd also like some kind of swap of 3rd or 4th rounders just as a show of good faith back.

Pretty much, if the 2018 first rounder is in play then the Crows need to show us some love back the other way. We also better make sure Jason Taylor has some quality names on his first round draft board. If he's not beating the table excited about a range of names available for pick 12 then it's a no deal.

This is too much to give away you would have to be joking. I thought you were only allowed to give away your original 1st round picks for 2 years. If this is the deal that would mean 3 years in a row. We didn't have a first round pick in 2016 as we did a trade with Gold Coast in 2015 & then we wouldn't have a first round in 2017 or 2018. Yes we would get back a first round. But remember after the trade period last year the AFL admitted they stuffed up in allowing Hawthorn to trade there original first round selection to the Gold Coast for Jaegar O'Meara . They later said that shouldn't have been allowed as they traded there first pick in 2016 & they should have only been allowed to trade a first round selection that was given to them from another trade.

Think your being a bit over the top here. If this trade does come through we only lose 8 spots in this draft and you can tell me the talent gap is that big from 10 to 18.

Trading next years first is a risk but if it gets us the best young defender in the comp I can live with that.

I will be [censored] if we do this deal.

Not on at all... Have a backbone Melbourne. Dont be weak at the trade table.

That’s a terrible deal for us.

Can we trade;

2018 first round & 27 to Richmond for Picks 15 & 16.

This allows Richmond to use Pick 27 on Naish (father son). I think this works well for Richmond. Not sure on father son draft rules. Correct me if I am wrong!

We pass 15 & 16 onto scum bag Crows!

We keep Pick 10 & gain Lever...

* I would rather give 2018 first rounder to Richmond than Adelaide.

afl.com.au saying a Lever deal is getting close and we are more than likely to hand over 2 first round picks to Adelaide for Lever and a mid-late first round pick (guessing either pick 12 from Cameron or 16). Guessing some pick upgrades for Adelaide too.

So probably something like..

Dees get - Jake Lever, pick 12, pick 53, pick 72

Crows get - pick 10, 2018 1st round, pick 46, pick 65

Thoughts?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
