Too many seduced by Lever.

He is good....but no so good that you risk animosity

If it's the 750k rumoured, our young blokes need to suck it up, and play their asses off to justify the comparison at their next contract.

If we are losing games for a finals spot against a garbage side decimated by injury, we clearly do not have lots of players worth more than 750k in it.

I'm excited by the potential of many of our youngsters, but it remains Potential, not realised. Only the loss of Oliver would make me weep, as I believe he is a generational talent.

Everyone knows you pay more for external talent when you are at our level. Everyone.

Our footy department has decided we are entering a premiership window, and as such we can put the medium term on hold, and trade away the early picks. If that doesn't excite the playing list, they are playing for the wrong reasons.

Goodwin thinks he can coach us to a flag with the addition of Lever, and other targeted talent. I'm bloody excited about that, and the playing list should be too.

If that happened then the crows should sack that person and it’s just amateurish, it’s like a toddler chucking his toys out of the cot

I agree I cant believe they would not think that is not a fair offer. If the worst happens Id rather see him go to North for nothing than pay overs for him.

Coz I can tell you for a fact that the players would definitely be pretty angry about.

well I hope the players are ALSO angry about missing out on the finals. This guy can make that dream much more possible.

Plus I also think that anyone recruiting Lever would be paying around this much.. So we shouldnt make a play for him as players will be angry?? Of course a united playing group is crucial, and I do hear your point,  but this team needs improvement or none of them ( or us)  will ever taste a premiership. Surely players would be happy knowing that we're a team  that can recruit and build our way to success not settle into the middle.

How does preseason draft work? Can we officially offer Lever 1 year for 1.2 million front loaded with the rest payed over 3 years, so that no clubs will pick him up? Or can a club like North offer him a contract for 3 years but it has to be done at 1.3 mill per year, and if so he can't walk into the draft but they can trade him next year for picks?

Who's on heaps less D that thinks they have more value?

Lever is being paid on form and potential to drive us to the next step, hopefully the playing group can give it time to see how it works out and not get their noses out of joint.

It's not that particular payers believe they're worth more per se.

Lemme try and explain this without getting too much hate haha

So all year, the younger playing group as a whole has been told that the club is moving in a different direction, they are changing things up and bringing in a lot of coaches/new players etc

The players have been drilled into their heads all season that certain things need to change to achieve the ultimate success, they need to be team first and other things.

One part of that is that even though they may receive great offers from other places, if you wanna stay at Melbourne and help them achieve a flag you may need to take less money for the meantime. This includes all current and future players.

Now imagine that the club is going over and beyond for a 21 year old, 50 gamer, and are willing to pay him more then most if not all of the current players, that kinda contradicts everything they've been told.

Thats what's gonna annoy them. Theyd love to have Lever alongside them, but not at that cost.

I hope it's more like he's on $700k a year with bonuses built in or something, not a million a year. That would be much better.

Adelaide are acting totally unreasonably and unprofessionally.  It is almost a form of football terrorism trying to create a frenzy of fear, hate and jealousy within our club, players and supporters.  We have dared to lure a player back home as they did with Thompson and are trying to do with Gibbs. Well Victorians get homesick too and Lever has called their bluff and they don't like it!  FFS the poor kid had to live in Adelaide for 3 years - give the kid a break!!!

We should be celebrating this news as our club is trying to win a Premiership - FOR US!!!!  I am sick of being the wimps of the competition, on and off the field.

Don't feed the Adelaide FC hate.

What a terrible and contemptuous way to negotiate, not.  It was a decent opening offer and they just up and leave!  Bizzare.

Burton sounded like a real dropkick on Trade Radio today.  He was asked if other clubs had offered the Crows a similar trade as mfc has.  He dodged the question and said something like 'he didn't want to discuss that as it wouldn't be helpful to the negotiations.'

It makes me wonder if no other interested club has bettered mfc's offer.  Burton had better get his priorities sorted and get back to the negotiating table.

While Brett Burton did come across a bit amateurish, I think Kane Cornes has slapped a fair serve of mayo on that story.

I should've added that i don't full believe it, because who acts like that in real life. I'm just reporting it.

What interested me was, what Lever said, about how he thought, we played an exciting brand of football. What a  comment coming from a GF footy player from another club, very pleasing.

The other interesting thing was that Burton wasn't one who was short on chasing a quid, in his playing days.

I think he has 750,000 reasons to say that mate. If it was genuine, i agree, it warms the heart.

Thanks D, appreciate the time you take around here. Eye opening and hopefully, if we do get Lever, it doesn't fracture the group.

We need to understand that this is the first publicised contract offer post the 20%+ pay rise so figures are going to look inflated to historical offers. Current players will all get a piece of the pie at their next contract if their form warrants it.  Lever will make us a better side - fact.  That means finals - combined with other improvements, maybe even the big one. What will that do to every other MFC players market value?  I would be jumping for joy if I were a current player.

The benchmark in these things has been Hawthorn.  How do you think this deal compares to the $500K  p.a (pre 20% rise) Ty Vickery got.

Just remember his brother is on the Dees list... it's valuable feedback from D. In saying that as a member I want Lever in our squad and hope the players to do even if at a slight premium on the new CBA.

Thanks, Drunkn, I love that you post a perspective here, and that you also hold a confidence when you need to (not giving BenKen up, but giving us a heads up).

I get this perspective, but I would be looking for the young players to step up and be demanding better contracts as they develop.  I’m sure that there would be some jealousy, but after an initial flush, do they really stand around comparing pay packets? Some of the B Rookies are on a pittance to some of the established players.

I hope the message was ‘don’t expect overs’ - and ‘we have to spread the load if we want to win a flag’.  Rather than ‘you are all going to be paid less’.  I think with the new CBA, there is room for guys like Petracca, Oliver, Hogan, Viney (Kealty??) to earn well.  At some point they may have to make a choice as the Cats or Hawks players did - take a little less and get success, or get bigger bucks somewhere else.  I dont think we are at that point.  In 2-3 years I think there will be a core bunch of guys on Lever money, and a band on a bit less.  This is not a Boyd to Bulldogs deal (they seemed to manage...), but I think it may set a new internal benchmark for the guys to aspire to.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
