Paul Connors spoke at an Old Xavs golf day yesterday and said Lever will be a Demon, and he will be the highest paid player at the club.

He also specifically mentioned that it is a very interesting move as he manages Petracca who, next year, might be asking for similar money.

Scully was the highest paid player at GWS and they seemed to have retained much of their required talent.

If true, this just needs to be managed well internally. Lever is an obvious player for a club like ours to break the budget on. I suspect the players understand this.

Howe and Lumumba trades aside, our list management and recruitment strategy seems extremely good these days.

That's a bit unprofessional I would've thought.

Are you taking the pizz?

Would be flabbergasted if Connors would say that stuff publicly.

And there would be some players seeking new management.

Connors can say what he likes - he isn't Lever's manager.

well, i have mail (from 2 sources in and around the club mind you) and they are very confident Lever will be in the red and blue next season.

and for those worrying about his pay and being the highest paid at the club, you need to spend some money to improve, and 800k in a couple of years wont be seen as a huge salary anyway. and who else is demanding all our money anyway???

according to some on here, we have depth issues and not enough players, so we can afford to pay him more to get him here while we are paying the younger/ less talented players less at the moment.

If you dont want Lever for 800k a season in our side, i guess you are happy with us being in the middle of the ladder every year?

Next time you see Paul please tell him to stop reading Demonland and he needs to get his own rumors. (LOL)

Was driving home last night and had SEN on the radio, OX and i think the guys name is Marco? Were both saying that players from both the hawks and cats took pay cuts for the side to stay together and win flags. OX said it's what good sides do, so if we want a flag/flags the club will need to work all this out, which I'm sure Jackson- Bartlett will be doing and doing well.

Yokozuna is right if people don't want the club to pay Lever the big $$$ then we will just be a side who one will not win a flag and two we will lose players to other clubs because these days players have been given a choice to go to the club who will be prepared to pay top $$$ for them.

Only slightly relevant.

I don't think the players as a collective would be too impressed with managers carrying on like this.

Can't see anything to gain by Connors doing that.

Which is why I find the report pretty dubious.

I agree with you and what you've said.

Couple of points i think needs to be considered

First you need the list to win flags before you worry about payments.

800k if rumored is correct is not massive in todays terms.

And lastly as a supporter i love hearing all the good (albeit unconfirmed news), but im not sure i like how public this lever news is with so long to go in the season. Things change quickly in afl

If I were Kelly and heard Lever was coming to MFC, I would take unders to come here. If Kelly and Lever were to come to the club - we would be a dynasty side.

Dynasty side like GWS were going to be? A [censored] tonne of hard work and structural and system adjustments still need to occur. Other coaches like Clarko, Longmire and a few others will still be on the edge looking to redefine and innovate how footy is played. All the while we'te only finding out whether Goody can coach these next two years.

$800k for a star CHB (who could probably swing just as well as TMac) is very good. The CBA has exploded and if that is where we can keep our best players at - we would be happy.

Those worried about Petracca suddenly asking for that much - he was going to get that much anyway. If we were paying these guys Dusty Money - we might have an issue, but we aren't.

Yep. 800k under the new deal is = to about 650k under the old one. Very fair $$$ for lever and trac especially considering both will keep improving

Lever - Melb makes offer Crows counter with similar - manager told Melb Pies, Dogs he was staying Dad moving over then BANG 900 Demons gone

So is he staying or going? Or is this one of Nixon's drunken rants?

What you need to remember is we have effectively probably paid for Lever in "past payments".  As long as we've paid 100% of our salary cap in previous years we would have prepaid large amounts to currently contracted players.  These prepayments mean you have a war chest of money to attract players like Lever when the opportunity comes.  We will probably pay him a large first year contract amount and then just put him on "a fair salary".

Job done.  Let's hope we paid 100% of our salary cap in past years.

Reckon we have offered $900k and he is on his way. Another one of his replies to someone mentioned the draft picks we will give the Crows for them to get a player from another club.

They changed the rules recently didn't they?

If we were only paying 97.5% this year we can pay 102.5% next year. Something like that anyway.

But yes. I concur. I hope we have been front loading the crap out of our contracts.

Wha? This makes no grammatical sense. Even Trump's tweets are easier to understand.

Sounds like crowd matched our deal. Dad was moving to Adelaide, we offered 900k and bam! Flip flop dee's are back on top!

Oh and Nixon prob sniffed a massive line before writing that.

What would be your maximum offer VP given this war chest?

I think aside from salary cap concerns, one issue demon fans may have with this offer if true is that we bought Lever for 900 more so than Lever deciding he wants to play for the Dees. And he might've joined any club on that offer. But knit picking as far as I'm concerned, he's a brilliant player and worth the coin to lure him.

Hypothetical - let's say the Lever deal gets done this week or next; would it be announced before the end of Adelaide's finals campaign? Would they like to give him a proper 'send-off' game I wonder?

So we offered a deal.

Then the Crows countered with a similar deal.

Manager told Melb, Pies and Dogs that Lever was staying.

Then we offered a bigger deal that knocked Crows for six (aka BANG).

Lever gone to Demons.

I think that's what he meant. I have young cousins so I understand gibberish.

You'd have to know the finances in order to determine what offer you'd make.  The main point is that by having this "war chest" you don't compromise future salary cap decisions because you're making the payment from past year surpluses.

Lever's decision to join/not join us will be based around a whole raft of issues, not just money.  Others can have a concern over the money if they wish but I won't. The fact that he joins us over others is evidence we are starting to become a serious player because anyone can offer money.  It's the other things that count.

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.
