All the talk at the moment is that it's btw Dees and Footscray; Crows would prefer he went to Pies cos they're prepared to give up pick 6, but Lever's preference is Melbourne

The $$ have been pushed up by Footscray's offer, as to whether or not we are matching that valuation is another matter

I was told yesterday it's a "done deal" but we shall see

I am interested in the term "done deal".

To me it means the player has selected us and the clubs have agreed on the price.

I would say it is a million to one on that definition to be a "done deal".

IMO at best, the player has selected us and advised us of that. That is not a "done deal".

Feel free to enlighten me.

If you believe the AFL website the Dogs were told last week they are out of the race so if my maths correct... Welcome to the MFC Jake!

Lever will say nothing until the Crows finish their season.  Quite rightly, his focus should be on winning a flag this year... before he nominates us and works at winning another next year...

as for your missus...can she take a decent intercept mark?

what i was told is that a significant party at adelaide has declared that it's a "done deal" in so much as he's picked the club he wants to play for and the salary he wants to receive - but like everything, i take it with a grain of salt

Caught about 2 minutes of Sen this morning with Kb and another person, can't remember who. Lever was discussed briefly with the generally jist being the "mail" that Collingwood being in the mix was incorrect, however bulldogs staff allegedly think they're a chance. The overall feeling I got was Melbourne still in the box seat. Probably nothing that hasn't been speculated already.

Well if we are in the box seat, I hope they use that seat with far far more commitment than they did when in the box seat going into round 23 ??

Wasn't Juddy a "Done Deal"?

I think that was all in our heads.  He was a Melbourne supporter so, naturally, we thought we were a chance.  We didn't even make the final 3 sides in his selection process.

You are probably right, wow he really dodged that bullet didn't he!

Ok what about the team thought finals were a done deal then ;)

Even the poster who made the "done deal" reference immediately followed it up with "but we will see". It is clearly not a done deal in any sense of the word, no matter how loose your interpretation is.

Which really doesnt make sense. As a dees supporter he would be all too aware of how crap we are

You'll hold on to any reason in the hope a star player might choose you as a destination club.

At least these days we have some reasons based on fact and not just hope.

Which seems to suggest that we've convinced Lever, but that's only 3/4 of the battle.

We now need to get it over the line with the Crows on terms that are palatable to both clubs. That's where the rubber can really hit the road.

We must have been told Josh Kelly isnt interested in MFC, or hes staying at GWS. Unless something's happening behind the scenes.

Would hope we are making Kelly priority 1 if he is available.  Lever a distant 2nd.

I wouldn't have thought we'd be too deeply into Josh Kelly.  Nth (amongst others) appear obsessively hell-bent on selling everything to get him over.  It'd be irresponsible of us to try to out bid that sort of lunacy.

I'd target Whitfield over Kelly based on long term salary cap and probability of getting a deal done in terms of not giving as much away.

I personally think Whitfield playing outside of Clarrie and Viney would be huge

I see him as a Rivers type, floating back/across to intercept the ball. Be that as it may, we don't have a decent one of those (nor would i say that we have a good 1v1 KPD). Given there are no "good" 1v1 defenders on the market atm, i'd be happy to bring him in.

You never turn down the chance to land a quality player. I'd also be going hell for leather for Tom Lynch (who comes off contract next year) - Him and Hogan up forward would be supremely better than Hogan, Watts and Weideman.

I was thinking this as well. We desperately need some leadership up forward and this guy has it. Helps out with contested marks as well. Is he coming up for free agency end of next year? Shake the tree, see if he's interested in a move back to Vic. I'd include Weids as part of the trade. Not because he's no good, but I think we need him to be further advanced than he currently is.

Bringing in Lever at one end and Lynch at the other would make us serious contenders. Would certainly love Kelly kicking it up there, but is that a bridge too far???? (Yes, I know) Depends what you're willing to give up though. For those three players it would mean big draft picks and players, not to mention cap space. I'd throw Weids, Tyson, Frost, ANB, Kent, JKH, Harmes, VDB, Bugg, Wagner all up for trade if it meant we'd pick up those 3 players (apart from Weids all of those players have been regular 22 at some stage). Vince on a 1 year reduced terms depth contract to play at Casey. Trengrove, Kennedy, Hulett delist. Spencer goes as a free agent. J. Smith and Maynard upgraded from the rookie list meaning we only need to take 1 pick to the wishing well. All draft picks go on the table, 1st this and next year, 2nd, 3rd, whatever we pick up in trades, to be used for those 3 players somehow. Finalise the list with cheap free agents for depth and structure on 1 year contracts until the list is in such a state that we can afford to be bringing in more youth. Right now that's the last thing we need.

Yep, it's dreaming and more than just a little bit of rubbish. The stretch (apart from a trade miracle) is obviously the salary cap. Perhaps we need to trade for the Hawks accountant as well?

Jetta OMac Hibberd

Hunt TMac Lever

Jones Lewis Kelly

Petracca Hogan Watts

Melksham Lynch Garlett

Gawn Viney Oliver

Salem Brayshaw Hannan Pedersen

What more could you want??? Lol, nice to dream.

Never to us.

It would have been hard to get him that year, as he had already committed to Dick Pratt, before he pretended he was still deciding which club to go to and wasted our time looking at our facilities and discussing his move.

Not my favourite footballer.

He took a few clubs for a ride that year, including us.

To be fair we didn't exactly make our club an attractive place to play for at the time, so you couldn't blame him for not wanting to come to us.

Except by the time that happens Pedersen and Lewis will be retired or on last legs, with Jones and Garlett not far behind. And we would have traded out any sort of depth. Having said that it would all be worth it for a flag. I like to think (foolishly) we already have all the right players and we just need more time.

Yes had that in the back of my mind and decided to hell with it, trade the future for a flag. Having said that I still hold hope for Stretch and McKenna, as well as T. Smith and Keilty as talls. Don't forget J. Smith and Maynard as well. I think with those changes we have a cracking side, good depth and the needs are reduced to the lower end of things for quite a while. Garlett is the one for mine as Dion is the only prospect in that role and he doesn't appear all that close at this stage.

Look at it the other way, what's the chances of us keeping all of my potential trades anyway? Realistically if they don't come on we're stuck with them, and if they do come on they'll be annoyed at a lack of game time most likely and leave anyway.

It's a roll the dice call, if it's possible.

Either would be a dream, and id gladly pay a little overs.  Both are the perfect cream on top of our contested ball winning midfield.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
