He's yet to have a breakout game, but he's a very important player, who's performing his role well and bringing his teammates into the game with some clever decision making.

5 touches and umpteen dropped marks in a winning side against Brisbane under a roof. Wowzer. 

 

On in a more serious note, I truly worry about his concussions, copped barely a tap to the head in a standard forward pack (I think when Bruce snapped on his right foot for goal) and seemed dazed and down for about 10-15 seconds. I think it's going to be a huge issue, if it isn't already.

21 disposals is bloody good for a player who is effectively a second year player.

Some comparisons:

- Chris Judd achieved this in his third year.

- Gary Ablett Jnr achieved below this for his first 5 seasons.

- Josh P Kennedy achieved below this for his first 3 seasons.

- Patrick Dangerfield achieved below this for his first 4 seasons.

Not only is he finding the footy in the midfield, he's finding it up forward and being instrumental with his scoring involvements.

This is inconsistent Christian Petracca. Cannot wait for consistent Christian Petracca. Will be a star of the competition.

Really appreciate the stats on this - demon land knowledge is awesome. Thanks for the reality slap - you're right @A F - if I'm feeling he's inconsistent - it will be a sight to behold in the future.

Really want Angus Brayshaw to start firing so we have two things to thank the Saints for and to laugh at them twice as hard.

And from outside the top ten, the only really potent prospects to come through are -

Jake Lever, Isaac Heeney (Acad), Jack Steele, Caleb Daniel.

 

So, however things go, I don't think we'll left left feeling like we were the dud drafters that year, with Petracca, Brayshaw, Neal-Bullen, Stretch, and Oscar.

We had a potentially game-changing trade and draft period there (7 out of 8 are almost best 22), but the rest of the top 10 aren't too bad.

- Marchbank looks like he'll be a good player.

- If Moore was in our side he'd be a star.

- Cockatoo looks decent.

- Wright could be anything and is an exciting prospect.

- And Pickett is looking okay at Carlton.

- Lever is a gun.

- Heeney is a gun and will be star.

- Daniel was an important player in a premiership side.

The list goes on. Pretty strong draft really.

We did well with Petracca. Brayshaw hasn't developed as we would have liked, but I'm still confident he'll get there if he can stay on the park.

This is from a saints supporter at Bigfooty. A very honest and reasonable response.

 

Honest opinion from a Saints supporter. Selecting McCartin instead of Petracca is as baffling now as it was at the time. No hindsight required. Read any Saints threads pre draft that discuss us picking Petracca & the lead up to the leak we were leaning towards picking Paddy. Most Saints fans thought it was a troll the fact that we were even considering Paddy. The melt amongst fans ensued. After the draft fans obviously got behind Paddy & found positives.

In my opinion the Saints recruiters outsmarted themselves. They tried to find flaws in Petracca not to pick him. He's lazy. He's arrogant. He's selfish. All because the recruiters shatthemselves when the Bulldogs shelled out big for Tom Boyd. The problem is the St Kildarecruiters failed to follow the fundamental rule of pick high end draft talent. They failed to pickbest available.

Close to the draft all clubs recruiters were asked who they would pick at selection one. 16 clubspicked Petracca, one club Heeney & one club Paddy (obviously St Kilda). The scary thing iseven those fans with a lay opinion on the matter clearly had Petracca ahead of Paddy but theprofessionals running the St Kilda club failed in their duties.

It's obviously too late now, the past is the past & I think Paddy becomes a pretty decent footballer when all is said & done. But Petracca becomes elite top five in the competition quality.

Just quickly on Billings, as it's been raised. Billings was clearly a top three talent. The Saints recruiters shouldn't be blamed for picking him ahead of Bont. Pretty sure 16 clubs would've done the same. Apparently only Collingwood &the Bulldogs had Bont so high. We don't even know if the Dogs would've picked Bont ahead of Billings if they had the option. The concern with Billings is why has he failed to develop/why has the club failed to develop him. Fourth year in, he needs to show more.

A mate of mine who coaches at a middle level at Marcellin told me before that draft that Bont was both the most polite kid and the best talent he had seen come through the school in 25 years. I was stupidly hoping he might go through to us, but alas...

Interesting post and I wonder if the one club that ironically would have picked Heeney at #1, was us. Given we did select him first from memory.

Something that shone through in the saints game was how good his vision/playmaking ability is. His possessions can really open up the opposition to create space for his teammates and he does it with a very attacking mindset (ie always looking to move the ball forward into dangerous position). I'm loving watching him play at the moment.

Another Koschitzke? I'll never forget watching Schwarz interview him on some footy show and he just collapsed next to him. Scary stuff. Then a week later he crashes into an umpire playing VFL

Too true, and a very important presence in a team which generally has a large-volume of disposals with relatively little impact per disposal. It's like a mining project, with a whole series of small holes drilled and then the engineer comes along and sets the dynamite and boom! The small holes become big holes.

Petracca is a rare, rare talent. Once he gets on a roll he will be as unstoppable as any of our game's recent greats, with, dare I say it, a presence akin to Buddy or Betts. That snap on the weekend was sublime - the 40m bunt to Watts from range, or lining up for an orthodox set-shot, not so much. Coach the basics, but he needs to be given license to trust his instincts and back himself in.

It's a bit spooky that the number 1 and number 3 picks from that draft both have had concussion issues.

Brayshaw is coming from a long way back.

His pace worries me. He's very bottom heavy. But he's been very consistent with 1-2 showboat performances a match. High football IQ and great delivery going forward, too.

His different running style makes his movement look more clunky, but his acceleration is fantastic.

He's yet to have a game that he takes by the scruff and destroys a team. It'll happen, hopefully against Fremantle. But he does enough for me to suggest he will be an absolute gun for us. 

Brayshaw I feel could have a bit of Salem's luck about him. We were patient with him and it's starting to pay off, Brayshaw has it in him and I see him being a valuable mid for us in the future.
