This kid has great vision and wonderful hands. He has the ability to drop the ball into a passing runner's hands in just the right way.

Looking forward to watching him for many seasons.

Clearance Oliver.

What a gun. What a selection.

Never seen a kid make playing footy (for Melb) look so effortless

and his tank is good already, but wait until he gets up to 85-90% game time! 40 touches a week

have  a look at The Weed's goal. Oliver's one handed pick up at full pace and getting it off to Petracca was a thing of beauty. He is just so clean with his hands.

He seems to be similar to Dane Swan in that he used to have short bursts on the ground. Come on, dominate possession, then get off and rest. Repeat.

Except he doesn't run like a Duck!

Even Petracca to step inside to draw the player then handball over to Jones was pretty smart as well.

The player Oliver reminds me the most is Greg Williams. DIfferent players from different eras but have similar impact around the stoppages. Quick of mind, hands and decision making.

I think Tracc and Clarry are going to give us highlight reels for many years... usually one setting up the other...

Thank the ghost of Norm that Picket rang the club and talked them into picking him.

Its ridiculous that he can do this. Early call, but he's got the best hands I can ever recall from a player in the last 30 years. Seems better with his hands than Diesel Williams which is a big call. Sam Mitchell is also pretty handy under pressure but he has his measure as well IMO

Oliver's hands are fantastic - but geez - "better than Diesel Williams" is over-reach

Williams had great hands no doubt but the thing that differentiated Williams from 95% of star midfielders was that he always seemed to have about 30 seconds to get rid of the ball. That's another quality I'd like to see Oliver with. It'll come and if it does, then watch out !!!!!

I think they will always be slightly different  - Williams was never quick of foot but was lightning quick with his hands  - the congestion and numbers around the contest was not quite as great so in his day he would get the ball and it was gone in an instant.

Oliver has this wonderful ability to draw players in ( the featured clip on has him drawing in 4 players) but getting his hands up high with the ball and releasing the handball with accuracy from eye level or higher. You watch - he rarely  gets caught with his hands by his sides  - they are free and high. Draw four opposition players to you and it will invariably mean that one of your teammates has to be free.

I wonder if he would have just as much impact or if the fact that he can come in for short bursts means he has a greater impact in the game.

I think you are on to something.

Oliver is a big boy who has shed a lot of weight.

Would not suprise me at all if he needs breaks to replenish energy levels more than others.

The Weideman running goal also featured a pretty handy one handed collect off the ground and handball to Petracca, not too dissimilar to the one in the Isaac Smith clip, though not under as much pressure. I wonder if he's got really big hands - seems like a very difficult thing to do at pace.

I like to think he runs like he is wearing gum boots.

Watched the replay last night, the kid's an absolute freak, he does things with his hands I'm not even sure Sam Mitchell could pull off!

I can see why some experts say he will be better than Petracca or Hogan - nice argument to have at our club

Sorry Nasher they were totally different. The Weid one was a great scoop off the turf. The Smith one was phenominal. He fended off Smith with one hand and plucked up the ball with the other (Koutafidis like) - in one motion. Both great pieces of play but not similar IMO. The Smith one was perhaps the best piece of brilliance I have ever seen in a 1st year player.

People have a propensity to get nose bleeds at high altitude.  In others words, he'd get a nose bleed for being taken so high.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
