If Oliver won the Brownlow, I don't think I'd be able to stand the masses' cries of "Stager! Diver!" Gah, I'm angry just thinking about it. But it probably won't happen, this year at least. Will be nice to watch the count with Dees players wracking up some good numbers for once though.

I'm pretty sure the conversation would turn to his speaking skills pretty quickly.

Is Clayton Oliver statistically the best second year player ever? The only other players I can remember such an impact in their second seasons were Chris Judd and Joel Selwood. Is anyone able to somehow check his second season stats against other superstars?

This kid is a ripper. He's had an unbelievable season for someone so young, and will be the main ball winner in our midfield for the next 10 years!

I think you can compare player-to-player by year at footywire. Though in my mind there is no doubt that Clarry is comparatively a fair way ahead.

Cannot believe he doesn't get spoken about in higher regard by the "experts".

Each week his stats, especially contested possessions seem to just get passed over..

Happyfor him to fly under the radar for the time being. He shouldn't be in contention for the Brownlow, he's had a very good year but not that good.

He'll get his due recognition in time.

The media fall over themselves to gush over Bontempelli when he so much as farts.

You barely hear a mention about Clarry in the media. Shamefully biased.

100% agree. If Bontempelli was pulling Oliver's numbers this year the media would be wetting themselves with articles about him every fortnight.

Oliver vs Selwood at the same age.

Oliver beats him apart from frees received ?

Clarry is just taking the pizz with those numbers

by the way how did he not make the team of the week, do they only put players in from a winning side, had a much better game than coniglio who made the bench

When they listed Coniglio to justify his selection they listed his stats and Oliver's blew his out of the water in every way.

He plays for Melbourne and we don't sell newspapers nor are high value click bait!  The Vic media plays to the big membership clubs and we ain't one of them, yet!

Look at this: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/teams/essendon/top-afl-forwardhalf-pressure-numbers-revealed-in-the-drill-podcast/news-story/ccfa5915beec1bedf0b446e0a486b268

That story is all about Tippa at Ess and Rioli and Castagna of Rich as the 1st, 4th and 5th ranked players for forward turnovers and scores from them.  And who were 2nd and 3rd for both measures?  None other than our very own ANB (2nd) and Jeffy (3rd)but barely a word said about them.  Many of our players are underrated in the media until they can no longer ignore their elite performance eg Jetta. The article also shows what an asset ANB is for us who still goes under the radar a bit (even on this site).

Its really poor by the media that very deserving players get so little exposure.

this is the reason. he is in possession of the ball for such a short time that if you blink you miss him

To be honest I was surprised how many times he had the pill on Saturday.

He gets 5 each week I'm sure I miss.

genuine freak, will become one of the best midfielders melbourne has ever had

He is already the best midfielder we have had in the last 30 years.

Can anyone name a better season from a Melbourne mid in modern times?

Sometimes I try to make a gif of one of his lightning handpasses, but even in slow motion, it's too quick to be worth it. I'm only just barely exaggerating!

Sorry mate, but in that time we've had a Brownlow winning mid, AA players,  not to mention multiple B&F winners.

I don't disagree that Clarry has the tools to be as good if not better than those guys, but 'He is already the best midfielder we have had in the last 30 years' is crazy talk ....think before you post!

He's better than Woewodin ever was. And arguably had a more consistent season than any of the B&F winners. Doing the grunt work in a winning team. Not winning the B&F in a Steven Bradbury contest, no disrespect to those winners. It's not that crazy a statement.

And for the record I reckon he's one of the better kicks in the team. 50 metre bullets to advantage most times.

Moloney - 19 Brownlow votes in 2011, Clarry might top that but Beamer was good that year too.

Robert Flower played for the dee's  30 years ago.

Tingay, Todd Viney, Yze, Bruce, Jr Mac - we've had some damn good mids in that time too.

Clarry is a gun, but I'm not buying he's already better than every mid we've had in the last 30 years.

Fair enough.

Out of curiosity, excluding Flower, of the mids you've named and Oliver, if you had to pick one of them at 20 years old, who would you pick?

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.

The Dees are back at the MCG on Thursday for the annual blockbuster ANZAC Eve game against the Tigers. Can the Demons win back to back games for the first time since Rounds 17 & 18 last season? Who comes in and who goes out?
